VS 2010 Get The Number Of Bytes Already Downloaded Using "instance"?
Oct 11, 2010
So, I looked at the example in the codebank, it doesnt quite work, plus, implementing it into a otherwise finished project, seems unlikely.
Heres my question though,
using:
Dim instance As New System.Net.WebClient and then using... instance.downloadfile(fileurl, wheretosave)
Is there a way to get the number of bytes already downloaded using "instance"?

I want it to do is that you input a string, then you select an algorithm (Theres only going to be one RijnDael) then you input a key, then the Initialization Vector comes from "txtIV.text" then you select the key bytes and the block bytes from the numeric up/down, then you either encrypt or decrypt.

Ok i am having some issues designing a base-class to handle generics.Caveat is i need to restrict the type put in as a Numeric type, specifically Int16, Int32, or Int64 (Short or Long).I know you can do Of T as {Structure} but i dont want to select the key bytes and the block bytes from the numeric up/down.

What exactly does this line do?
i = stream.Read(bytes, 0, bytes.Length)
Does it read the entire message string sent by the client? I have a line to write to the stream later in the code and that does not seem to be sending anything back to the client, although the code around is excuting.
i = stream.Read(bytes, 0, bytes.Length)
While (i <> 0)
Try
' Translate data bytes to a ASCII string.

Well basicly i have a file from which i extract bytes and save them to a text file using this code :
Private Sub browse_Click(sender As System.Object, e As System.EventArgs) Handles browse.Click
Dim oFile As System.IO.FileInfo
[Code]....
Everything works well, but I don't know how to recover this file using the extracted data from bytes ! I Know for example the first byte of that file is 39 But i just can't do :
dim mybytes() as byte
mybytes(1)=39
You see what im talking about? I Want to recover those bytes from the same file I saved

So i have one file, that has one header that tells me if the bytes are in little or big endian format.The content of the file after the file is something like this, one byte that indicates a new "section", then several bytes until the other "section". This bytes each one represent the number of the bytes that i need to read in the second section.

I'm receiving a byte array from a network device by using the TcpClient class and as I have no idea how much data will be being sent I have to just declare a buffer that is X number of bytes long and keep reading into that until I've got all of the data. I then convert this byte array to a string using Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetString but the problem is that this gets any null bytes that were at the end of the buffer after the string and it includes them in the string. This then means when I do String.EndsWith it doesnt work as I would expect it to because there are just loads of 0 bytes at the end of the string.
Once I had realised that was what was happening (which took a long time as these null bytes are completely invisible when you are looking at the data in String form) I thought fine I'll just use Trim on the string but I've found that this doesnt make any difference at all. I thought Trim was supposed to remove any blank space from the start/end of a string, which I assumed would include empty bytes as well.
So is there any alternative I can use that will trim the empty bytes off the end or do I have to do it the 'manual' way and loop through my byte array before converting it to string and remove any null bytes? One thing that has just popped into my head as I'm typing this is to try using the Chr method and pass it 0 and combine that with Trim like so:

My issue is regarding overloaded functions of the already provided IIf function that would handle specific types. As you all know the IIf function provided returns objects, rather a specific type so for my needs I created a few overloaded function to do just that but with a specific type in mind. So having said I have IIf functions for types of booleans, strings, bytes, integers, etc etc.
Now my problem is when I'm trying to pass a byte value to this function that would return one of the two byte values. When I do this the designer keeps confusing my values as an integer value and calls for me to convert it to a byte. If I did this then it would defeat my entire purpose for creating these functions-which is to avoid any conversions. The only way I can solve this is by converting the whole statement itself or the true/false parameter parts individual to specify to the designer that these values are bytes. I'm just hoping there's a way of identifying the difference between bytes and integers..

how I could make an application in visual basic 2008/vb2005 that detects when a new file is downloaded. One of my old time friends created the same app with visual basic 2008. It notifys you when your attempting to download a file. For e.g: I try to download "aim6.exe"
it will show a message: "C:UsersMATTST~1AppDataLocalTempsXx0Fd31.exe.part is attempting to be downloaded"
I think it uses a file system watcher.

I have an xml file that I download from a secure site every 5 minutes, I have the application set to download at 3 minutes after the hour so it runs at 3, 8, 13, and so on. The file is supposed to be there within a minute after the 5 minute increment has occured however this is not always the case, so I changed the download time from 2 minutes after the hour to 3 minutes. However I am still running into issues with it not being there even then. What I want to do is validate the downloaded xml file to ensure that the data is there and if it is not wait 10 seconds and rerun the download again.
if the file is valid it will call the SQL import Sub (),if not it needs to delete the existing file and rerun the download sub again.The problem I am having is that all the examples that I have seen when I google are for validating the xml file prior to upload or upon the xml files creation.

CODE:
But it simply won't work. It always throws that exception and I don't know why. I tried debugging and it sad that the value of bundle is nothing. The error is on this line of VB For i = 0 To bundle.MessageCount - 1
The interesting thing is that it worked ONE time only. And after that time, never again. What's the problem?

I'm writing something to download about 200 small (Around 200kb) files at a time. I pass the file urls off to a class which starts the downloads. The problem is that it'll start the download (Just creates a 0kb file) and then slowly downloads each file one by one, waiting for the next to complete despite this being a threaded class. This would be fine but after about a minute, windows removes all of the 0kb files and I'm stuck with only a few of the files being downloaded. How to get multiple files to be downloaded concurrently?

I am working on a website at the moment which is displaying a strange bug with generated word documents. The site has a feature on it which allows the user to download a word document containing information related to their visit. This file is generated via some vb.net code and takes an xml template of the final document and inserts the relevant content required.
The strange behaviour is that on some machines the .doc file generated displays fine and on others it displays as XML when opened in Word. Both behaviours have been seen in the same version of Office (2003) but on seperate machines. My question is really whether the error lies with the set up of word on the individual machines, or whether there is an error in the code.
The code to create the file and download it is as follows:
Response.Clear()
Response.ClearHeaders()
Response.AddHeader("content-disposition", "inline; filename=MyNewFile")
Response.ContentType = "application/msword"

I'm just starting out with VB and have downloaded and installed VB Express 2008. I'm researching and trying to wrap my head around programming in VB before I start working on any projects. I have a little bit of experience with ASP Classic so some of the syntax looks familiar, but I can't get a handle on database integration. Let's say I am creating an address book. Each installation is a stand-alone (no network connectivity). How are databases used in this situation? Are they built using VB Express and packaged into the installer or can you create them separately (using either Access or MySQL) and then package them into the installer? What is needed to read and write to these databases? Are there extra bits of software that need to be packaged into the installer to allow access to the databases?
What if this application does connect to a centralized database (let's say a MySQL or Access database on a web server). Is the connectivity handled the same way? Sorry for so many questions, but I just can find the answers I'm looking for when searching. I'm not necessarily looking for the actual code to do this, just an explanation of how it's possible (or even a link to some examples/tutorials).
