VS 2010 Init Structure Members Upon Creation?
Jul 15, 2011how you init a variable when it is created by assigning the value on the same line in which it is declared. Is there a way to do this with members of a structure?

View 4 RepliesI'm having some headaches using Structures and functions that return Nothing in VB.NET. [Code] In the previous code, when I return Nothing as result of Foo function I'd expect that st is Nothing. But this is not what happens. Then I found in MSDN documentation: Assigning Nothing to a variable sets it to the default value for its declared type. If that type contains variable members, they are all set to their default values.
So I discovered that when I assign Nothing to a structure, all its members are set to their default values, instead of the structure itself.
Also, I tried to make st a Nullable type by declaring: Dim st As Nullable(Of Test) = Foo()
but, still I can't check if st is Nothing by using: If st Is Nothing Then
or If st.Equals(Nothing) Then
So, questions:
1 - Is it possible to assign Nothing to the structure and not to its members?
2 - How can I check if a return structure value is Nothing?
In VB.NET, why can't I see a member of a structure when I make it a nullable type?
Example:
Public Structure myNullable
Dim myNullVar As Integer
End Structure
Sub Main()
[Code]...
I have a structure written in vb.net with all shared members. I need to override 'Equals', '==' and '!=' to avoid a warning.
View 4 RepliesI am trying to figure out how to print specific members of a structure when I only have to pass the structure itself i.e.
Dim Point1 as PointF = New PointF(15,30)
Debug.Print(Point1) ' This will output "{X = 15, Y = 30}" by default
I am trying to figure out how I can do the same with my own strucutres, for example:
Dim Point2 as PointF2D = New PointF2D(15,30)
Debug.Print(Point2) ' This will output "ClassName.PointF2D.Point2"
How can I get my structures, when passed to a print statement, to print specific members of that structure by default? P.S. Please give another way other than overloading the .ToString function.
When it comes to constructors in a Structure type ,it is fact that we can not explicitly provide the default constructor .It is provided by the runtime. Ok, another point that is applicable to C# language is that if we are defining a parametrized constructor then it is compulsory to initialize all fields . We can not leave any field uninitialized , since the runtime will not call default constructor if we are calling parametrized constructor .Its logically right , but in VB.NET language , actually you are free to leave any of the fields uninitialized in your parametrized constructor.

I have a main array that is a structure with three fields which consists of id_code(int)members(int) and annual_income(dec). I've get everything entered and I want to go to a procedure that prints a report giving the total percentage of families below a particular income and the level is different depending on how many members there are in the family.

I have an app that calls a DLL, and passes a string to it (by reference). The DLL then fills the string and passes it back to the app. Before calling the DLL, the string must be sized correctly to fit the data the DLL is going to pass it. In the past (using VB.NET 2003) I just initialized the string with the correct number of spaces. This always seemed silly to me and I'm wondering if, in VB.NET 2010, there is a way to do this using a number to define the size?

For my ToDo list I have these data: Activity, date, start time, end time.I have 2 listboxes. The first listbox stores the activity and date. The 2nd listbox stores activity, date, start time and end time. With a button I can hide/show the 2nd listbox.

I made some classes in which elements like "Equals" and "ReferenceEquals" are confusing or I don't want them to show, or I have other methods providing similar functionality with different names and I don't want to override and use the default name.
i have issue with simple thing
Dim TblPans As List(Of TableLayoutPanel)
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Try
TblPans.Add(New TableLayoutPanel)

The problem I'm having is that it seems like strings have to be initialized differently than other types and I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

I have an event callback that I created to respond to the value change of a numeric control. For some reason this sub is called event before my first Frm_Load submethod is called. Grrrr...why is this sub being called first before anything else?? The event passed appears to be "Empty".
View 2 RepliesIn VS2008, I can stub out interface members with the following code using TextSelection to insert the implement line and then "simulate" the Enter key by inserting a new line. However, it doesn't work anymore in VS2010.

TextSelection txtSel = {After_Class_Declaration_Line};

I have a number of arrays (lets say two for the time being, but this needs to be scalable from 1-n). Each array represents a different "parameter" for the application I'm working on. I need to create a multidimensional array containing a set which represents each of the permutations of each of the "parameters". Effectively each row represents each permutation of the selected options for each "parameter" array.
For instance, say the first array of inputs is:
"Blue"
"White"
"Yellow"
And the second:
1
66
95
I need to create an array:
"Blue", 1
"Blue", 66
"Blue", 95
"White", 1
"White", 66
"White", 95
"Yellow", 1
"Yellow", 66
"Yellow", 95
The main work is in the "If Not (OutputTemp Is Nothing)" loop. Effectively I need to access the content in the first array with a "modulus" so that: (using the example above). I'm accessing the rows in the following method
OldArr,NewArr
11
12
13
21
22
23
31
32
33
worked it out.
Here is the code.

View 2 RepliesI'm having trouble porting some .NET2-era C# to .NET2-era VB.NET. Specifically, I am trying to define an interface that an ASP.NET user control will implement.(For background, I am trying to re-implement Phil Haack's Model-View-Presenter example from several years ago: http://haacked.com/archive/2006/08/09/ASP.NETSupervisingControllerModelViewPresenterFromSchematicToUnitTestsToCode.aspx)
The C# interface I'm working from defines properties and events (IsPostBack, Load) that are already implemented by the base control. However, VB.NET is forcing me to explicitly implement these properties/events in the user control (Public Property IsPostBack() As Boolean Implements IView.IsPostBack...). I'd like to just define these in the interface and not have to do anything special in the code-behind of the implementing user control.I'm assuming that I can do this in VB.NET, I just don't know how. I've spent all sorts of time googling/bing-ing, and haven't come up with the answer.
I'm making some cataloging software that will catalog all the items in our shop, and I'm saving the data [structure] as an XML file through the following code. However, I'm not sure as to how to convert it back to a structure.

I have this structure:
<StructLayout(LayoutKind.Sequential)>
Public Structure ContFileHeader
Public MagicID As UInteger ' 4 bytes
[code]....
Why then:
Dim header As New ContFileHeader
Debug.WriteLine(Marshal.SizeOf(ContFileHeader))
gives me 32 ? Is there a way go get 23 as the size of this structure?
Basically I have a system that will take an unknown structure (that should be marked serializable) and attempt to serialize it to a stream. However, before the system will do that, I want to know if there's a way to check every single variable/property to make sure that all the types are serializable.Anyone know a way?
EDIT: For now, I was able to do this:
Private Function IsSerializable(ByVal obj As [Object]) As [Boolean]
If obj.GetType.IsSerializable Then

I am currently working on a program for my class. The user puts in two numbers into two separate text boxes and then my program takes those numbers and puts them through several arithmetic equations such as sum, difference, product, etc and displays them in a listbox. I have that part of it done. Now I have to make it so the users can only enter numbers ranging from 1 to 10 in each listbox. If they enter anything besides that I need a message box to show up telling them to only enter numbers between 1 and 10.

How can I check if these two variables have the same data?
I'm current using this to populate a listbox with some data:[code]I want to do the same but using a datagridview. It's possible to use the structure I already have to populate a datagridview? I searched but found nothing about that.
