View 7 RepliesI am new to vb and need some help with this change program. The idea is that we are given a certain amoun of change and then telling how many dollars, quarters, dimes, nickles and pennies. I thought I would convert the decimal to an integer and then use a while loop for every text box, i.e. dollars, quarters, dimes, etc.., to show how many of each, but the while loop is confusing for me in vb, but to tell you the truth I don't know if I am on the right track,

A c# class's single dimension byte array contains socket level instrument sensor data as per:
public static byte[] frameData
I am reading/writing a fixed length header into a stream and I need to do the following in VB:
1. Convert a 2 byte integer (int16) into a byte array
2. Read 2 bytes of a byte array into an integer variable
I have a very simple question about converting a byte array into 16bit integers. I am connected to a device through a serial port. It sent me six bytes which represent three Int16 integers. For example, the byte array is called newRecievedData(5) and has a length of 6.
The manual that came with the device claims that the int Format is 8 bit MSB|8 bit LSB. Does that mean the following?
newRecievedData(0) contains 8 high bits of the first Int16
newRecievedData(1) contains 8 low bits of the first Int16
newRecievedData(2) contains 8 high bits of the second Int16

but VB.NET Express 2008 gives me the error that Error 1 Value of type '1-dimensional array of Byte' cannot be converted to 'Short'.
I am looking to convert an integer into a boolean array where each item in the array corresponds to a bit in the binary representation of the integer.
MyInteger = 3 '011 in binary
to
MyArray(2) = False
MyArray(1) = True
MyArray(0) = True
Also is there anyway to assign a value to an Integer in binary or hex (like MyInteger = 1010b or MyInteger = A7h)?
What is the simplest/best practices way to get a comma separated list of the integers in the Integer array levels?
Dim levels(5) As Integer
Dim levelsStr As String
'put values in levels'

convert this C value for me?
Value : 0x00000000L
I'm trying to convert an integer (0 to 255) into a 2-value hex string. For instance, if the integer was 255, the hex string would be "ff", if the integer was 15, the hex string would be "0f". The issue I'm having is trying to keep the leading 0. I've been able to overcome this by using an if statement to determine if the length is less than 2, in which I would concatenate a 0, but this is pretty inefficient I think. Here's my
Dim get_integer as Integer = TextBox1.Text Dim hex_value As String = Convert.ToString(get_integer, 16)
If hex_value.Length < 2 Then
hex_value = String.Concat(0, hex_value)
End If
how to improve this? I really would like to get away from using the if statement.
I cut my programming teeth on QBASIC so apologise if I'm a bit behind the times. I wrote a program in QB and I'm trying to convert it to VB.NET. One stumbling block I've hit is the DATA & READ facility, there does'nt appear to be an equivilant in VB. I want to read a list of data into an array using a FOR NEXT loop.
View 13 RepliesHere is what I am trying to do:
TemporaryControlsPart.ChannelList = Split(MainControllerModuleChannelList,
";")
Here is the error I receive:
Error 1 Value of type '1-dimensional array of String' cannot be converted to 'System.Collections.Generic.List(Of String)'.
To me, this seems like a reasonable line of code.

I'm trying to loop through an array of byte and copy the contents to a new list of bytes, and display them back. see the code below.
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim myByte() As Byte = New Byte() {65, 66, 67}

I want to see str1 as "ABC" but the out put i get is "A B C" (ie with spaces between letters) note: I have to copy(chunks) within a loop and get the result at the end, this is just a sample to reproduce my real issue.
I am using Linq to convert an array of any object to a CSV list:String.Join(",", (From item In objectArray Select item.ToString()).ToArray())
This is giving me the strange error: "Range variable name cannot match the name of a member of the 'Object' class."I can get round it by wrapping the string in a VB StrConv method, with a setting of "Nothing":String.Join(",", (From item In oArray Select StrConv(item.ToString(), VbStrConv.None)).ToArray())
However, this seems like a bit of a hack and I would like to avoid it.Does anyone have any ideas when this problems occurs, and any better ways to get round it?
I am having problems removing an item from a List(Of Integer). I see you can remove it by doing a remove with the index, but I assume you can do some type of function where you provide the value that you want to remove and it removes it. I found it on the List(Of String), but not Integer.
View 1 RepliesIs there an easy way to search through a List(Of Integer) and find duplicates? Or do I need to do loops to search through it with each number, comparing it to each one?
View 3 RepliesI want to convert a List (of Long) into a string array.
Reason: it's a list of database IDs and I want to make a comma delimited string to pass into a stored proc.I tried this:
Dim commaDelimitedList As String = String.Join(",", itemIDList.Cast(Of String)().ToArray)
but I'm clearly not using the Cast correctly since it throws an exception:
System.InvalidCastException: Unable to cast object of type 'System.Int64' to type 'System.String'..
Is there a way to get Cast working for this, or am I stuck with ConvertAll and a delegate function?

View 4 Repliesconverting this to parallel for loop, this will be my first time on parallel for loop. i have this nested for loop, it looks like this:

I'm using String.Join to attempt to turn an array list into a string that is comma separated, such as "1,2,3,4". I can't seem to get the syntax working.
Here's what I'm trying:
Dim aryTest As New ArrayList()
aryTest.Add("1")
aryTest.Add("2")
aryTest.Add("3")

How can I go about doing this properly?
how to convert a list of int to byte array in C#, but can't get syntax to work out for me in vb.Converting a list of ints to a byte array.
View 1 RepliesI am creating a class that will represent a file and I am going to have lots of properties. Now I want the properties to return either a integer or a byte array. Is this possible or do I need to create 2 different properties one for the integer and one for the byte array? When I try I get. 'Public Property something As Integer' and 'Public Property something As Byte()' cannot overload each other because they differ only by return types.
View 2 Repliesive got some simple problem i cant understand how to solve.

a(1) is an array and integer (or double, tried both)
a(1) = a(1) + 1
Label1.Text = str(1) + a
the big part is where i get: operator '+' is not defined for types 'integer' and '1-dimensional array of integer'.why do i get that message and what does it mean? how do i make the code do what i want?
I'm trying to create a linked list of an array of integers. Why is the following implicit conversion required?
When I run the code that contains that conversion, I get the following error.
As a real-time data acquisition user control data (a packet of an array of bytes) arrives every second, is converted into an integer array and inserted into a linked list.
The most recently arrived data is painted as coordinates on a grid at the right of a PictureBox using Graphics.DrawLine (pen,X1,Y1,X2,Y2).
The oldest data (arriving 120 seconds ago) will be drawn at the leftmost portion of the Picturebox.
Why a linked list rather than a list? To display 120 views of time sequence data, the draw routine the most recently inserted node to a node that points to Nothing. How do I limit the length of the linked list to 120 nodes and always ensure that the last node points to Nothing?
Do While Not item Is Nothing
item = item.NextItem

this is for a BINGO game final project that I already turned in but this just bugged me that I could not get the sorting figured out. I am trying to get this to sort the random numbers in to columns under the correct letters but I keep getting the error Operator '>=' is not defined for types '1-dimensional array of Integer' and 'Integer' under the line:

What I'm trying to do is write a program to store my sports cards collection. Basically, just a forms based program that stores various data into files. Where I am stuck at the moment is I have a piece of code that opens a form to add card brands. It has a text box, and ADD button and a CANCEL button. What I want to do is be able to type a brand into the textbox and have it store it in a array when the ADD button is clicked, then allow another entry for another brand and have it stored into the array when the ADD button is clicked and so on until the CANCEL button is clicked. Then I would like for the data in the array to be written to a file. Where I'm having the problem is I can enter a brand name into the text box but the loop keeps adding that same brand name into the array.
Imports System.IO
Public Class AddCardBrand
Private CallingForm As Object
Private Sub btnAddBrandCancel_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnAddBrandCancel.Click
Dim form As New StartScreen()

i have having a annoying problem to do with loops.

When the user selects a few rows from my list box i want to run code on them selected items which i can do fine, but when the user only selects one of items and hits the button. it goes throught the loop first and gets the picture and all is fine its when it comes back to this function after there are no more items to perform tasks on. it increments index again and then falls over because its out of bounds of the array. i want it to stop after one loop but i also want it to be able to have the multiselect option still so the user has a choice.
I have a List in Do-Loop. That List is collecting some information with programmatically. So, How can I know and end the loop if List repeated in loop.
Code like this:
Dim X As New List(Of String)
Do
------
Loop While X IsNot Nothing
My code can't quit from loop and it repeats the list from first string. I want to know how can I determine the last value of list to change script like this:
Loop While X.Count = 10
having a bit of trouble with a bit of code. This is going to be a bit complicated to explain so i hope i can get the idea across. The idea is that the following bit of code uses an array called "lines" which has been loaded from a text file in a previous subroutine. I then want the status of each Checkbox to edit a set of lines in the array.

I am making my first windows forms application in VS2010 and I am having trouble with arrays. I have code that dim's an array 'TabSiteInfo(2,20)' as a string. Then, I have a Loop that adds records to the array. The problem is that my array is not filling values from the loop. I know VS2010 handles arrays differently, but I have this same code working fine for me in VS2008 ASP.NET application. Below is a sample of the code.
