VS 2010 Typed Datasets Are Created At Design Time Only And Not Dynamically
Jan 20, 2012
In a typical session with the program I'm writing, the user needs to be able to access the data in 1 to 500 (maybe) tables (but always only one table at a time). Up to now I've been creating these single table datasets dynamically, as and when required.I've now come across the distinction between typed and untyped datasets (where typed seems to be the recommended option). It seems, though, that typed datasets are created at design time only and not dynamically. Is this correct? Are all of my dynamically created datasets therefore untyped?
I created the dataset and connection to my SQL database at design time to make it easy to drag and drop bound controls and stuff to my form. My problem is this, when I did this it creates the connection string in design time also, but the connection varies depending on where the software is installed after the development. My question, is there anyway to set up the bound controls on my forms and everything with the typed dataset created in design time on the connection created in design time... then when the application is run, can it change the connection string at run time to get it connecting to and creating the dataset from the the correct sql database?
I just read this post url...Post #2 by jmc states indicates the use of Entity Framework instead of typed datasets.when jmc says something I usually pay attention. I have a large app that I've been converting from VB6 to .Net and I've used mainly typed datasets. It's a single user app that uses an Access database. I'm have no problems retrieving the data from a table or multiple tables and I'm very happy with its preformance. Is it worth scapping what I've done and learn how to use Entity Framework? I should add that I'm near the end of my programming career not the beginning.
I want to have a bunch of different screens, yet I don't want to have to use 20 different forms (I'm pretty sure that's bad practice anyways), and I don't want to lay down all the controls at once in the designer because then things get messy. I had an idea of running a sub on startup that would dynamically generate all the controls I need with all the right coordinates and settings, and then dump al the ones needed for a specific screen into a Panel. Then I return an ArrayList of panels, and pull out the correct panel to attach to the form when I need that screen. The only problem is that my form will not have any implicit knowledge of its controls, so I'm assuming I wouldn't be able to use the WithEvents / Handles. keywords to declare handlers in the form class (which is what I'd rather do).
Am using VB.net 2005, and I've created columns for the datagridview at design time. But when I run the code the fill method of the DataAdapter, the columns I created are not filled with data, but automatically generated columns appear. How can the columns I created at design time be filled with data?
I can usually find the answers to most of my questions via the Google Gods, but not this time.I have a form that has a TabPageControl and on that page a collection of labels and text boxes via a usercontrol.
On the form I have a button that allows the user to create a new tabpage, when the code adds a new page, it automatically adds the UserControl collection. I can't get my head around how to access the objects on the newly created tabpage.
What I need to be able todo is take the index of the tabpage that has focus and translate that against the UerContol name, but I havn't a clue how to do it!
I am adding a grid of buttons to a form at run-time, and all of then use the same Handler. My question is : Is there any way I canadd the TextBox at run-time ?I know how to but without it on the form, the IDE isn't very happy about the "MyClick" Sub - TextBox1 is not declared......
' some logic here to make nice rows and Columns of buttons ' with different .Text and .Name Me.Controls.Add(btn)
I have a DB application that I've created using the Datasources wizard. A particular insert requires that two inserts must be done at the same time meaning that it has got to use transaction. how to use transaction in this situation.Only performance counts!
I am creating a console application in Visual studio 2008-vb.net. I created a typed dataset-dataset1.xsd. Now in the code, I want to access the table. How can I reference the table?
A project I am currently employed with will have some time soon to improve and specialise a product that is currently in use. We may have about 4 man weeks spare in which we could replace the typed datasets that are in use.
The project is currently written in Vb.Net and we will definitely not have time to replace this code with C#.Net, although we would like to.
My question is what would you suggest as a replacement for the typed datasets.
I have currently suggested nHibernate as I have worked with Hibernate before and loved it.
I have set the connection string of my dataset(typed) asData Source=MyHomeServerSQLEXPRESS;Initial Catalog=dbTestSharing;Integrated Security=TrueThis is going to be a client side application. I need to change the machinename in the connection string so it could connect with server.
I used to build data layer by using Classes, however someone suggest to use Strongly Typed DataSets because it's faster in development. The data layer that I'm going to build should support multi DBMS(Oracle,MSSQL, MySQL..)

how is better build it by using Strongly Typed DataSets or by using Classes?
I am using VB 2008 & Access 2007 for windows forms application having typed datasets while creating connection to DB vb asks to store connection string so i did it now that i want to know where is the actual path of file where these connection strings are stored. b'cas after runnig a macro in Access Database i lost all these connections from Data Source Configuration Wizard Combo Box & also i am anable to create a new connection to Databases.I have tried to reinstall the entire Visual Studio couple of times .
I have to create controls for inputting info to create people objects in the program, because I don't know how many people they are going to input, I have a button that they can press to add more fields.
I need to add a doubleclick event for these dynamic controls (text boxes), how can I create an event for them if they haven't been created yet. Also, as far as I know you cant make a variable part of an object name while declaring it. I need to do something like
Dim dynamicText & (Append variable counter each time a box is made)As New TextBox dynamicText &variable counter. Name = "TimeTextBox" dynamicText.Text = "SdgsdG" dynamicText.Location = New System.Drawing.Point(100, 100)
[code].....
Also is there a way to like copy and paste a group of controls via code instead of having to code each individual one like if I had to do a text box along with a combo box and a lable all at once, can I throw it into something so I only have to recreate the container?
I'm trying my hand at making a program that crawls some of the larger retail sites for prices of products in a single category, TV for example. With Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, Newegg, none of them are an issue so far because I can call the site using httpwebrequest and parse with regex. The one that has me completely stumped is Target. If you check this link: url...You can see that there is a grid of all the TVs they sell. The problem is that the links are not part of the original page as they do not appear when you view the source code. As far as I can tell, they're called in by some Javascript code when you load the page. From what I've gathered, loading this final content via httpwebrequest is impossible. So how are pages like this crawled? Would a workaround involve using built in webbrower tool in vb.net? That seems clunky to me. Anyone point me in the right direction
I'm not sure, if this is possible, but what I would like to do is fill a DataTable with results from "SELECT TABLE_NAME FROM myDB.INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES" and then fill individual data sets in a For Each loop. I'm able to fill a data table with the table names I want to populate, and I can update my SQL Command of the SqlDataAdapter, but when I try to fill the data set by using the results from the row, I run into an error that I can not convert a string to a DataTable or DataSet. Each DataSet is named just like the table name. The code is at home, so I can't paste all of it here, but hopefully, you understand, what I mean. A small amount of the code that I remember is below, and this is inside a Using block connecting to a SQL Server. For Each row as DataRow in dt.rows
tsql = new SqlCommand("SELECT * FROM myDB.." + row("TABLE_NAME"), mycon) oleda.SelectCommand = tsql oleda.Fill(row("TABLE_NAME"))
Code: Public Class Form1 Dim NPB As Button Dim x As Integer
[code]....
As you can see, when I open a program from my menu, a new button will be created with text similar to this, "C:Program ". The button it self will not do anything. How can I create the method at the same time the button it is for is created? Also how can I change the text do that it gives me, for example, CCleaner.exe instead of the whole target path?
Is it possible to create a menu at design time and populate it at run time and then display it at the mouse pointer when I click on a cell in a datagrid?
I am creating a UserControl with rich design-time support that should eventually look like the Options window in Visual Studio (or many other applications). Basically a split container, to the left is a TreeView with 'option categories', and each node in the treeview corresponds to a 'panel' to the right with certain options.
Just for terminology, the nodes in the TreeView are OptionsNode objects, the panels (containing the controls that determine the options) are OptionsPanel controls. My UserControl itself is called OptionsView and is the control that contains the treeview as well as a panel that contains the OptionsPanels.
I have some experience in design-time coding, and I have gotten pretty far. The OptionsView control contains a property Panels that returns the ControlCollection of the right side of the split container. The user can add/remove OptionsPanels via this property (and automatically an OptionsNode is created). The property uses a custom CollectionEditor that tells the designer to create instances of type OptionsPanel (instead of just Control which is the usual collection type of ControlCollection). Furthermore, in the CreateInstance method I use the DesignerHost object and its CreateComponent method to create the panels, instead of just creating New OptionsPanel objects. This way the OptionsPanel created is selectable and editable (via property grid) during design-time:
vb.net Protected Overrides Function CreateInstance(ByVal itemType As System.Type) As Object If itemType Is GetType(OptionsPanel) Then
I'm looking for a the shortest/aseist way in VB.NET (or C# but using VB.NET at the moment) to get the string value of a method's name dynamically given the method call. For instance, I have a class like this:
Public Class Blah Public Sub Foo() End Sub End Class
Now Foo is a strongly-typed cover for a dynamic setting and I have an event handler that will fire when the setting changes and return the string name of the setting that changed.
I'd like to be able to switch/select on this string and have a case based on the Foo() method. To do this I need to able to get the string name of the Foo method from the method call itself (i.e. somehow GetMethodName(blahInstance.Foo())).
I have a Datetimepicker, when i select a date it brings up in a listbox all the files created on that day but in no particular order. So i wanted it sorted by when they were created (not to fussed either ascending or descending). i tried using the code below with no luck, This adds multiple of blocks of the same files on the selected date
is it possible to create typed data set tables dynamically or modify columns and the data types of an existing table. what i'm trying to achieve is to read the sqlString from an external file and populate a typed dataset table in order to use it as a crystal report data source.
using VS2008, targetting framework 3.5I have a rather complex UserConrol which does some of its own rendering.I display this UserControl on a form.Opening that form in the Designer creates an instance of the UserControl in the Designer, which tells me a NullReferenceException is occurring in one of my rendering methods.I have attempted to correct this by making alterations to the UserControl's default constructor, but have not found success.
i have a treeview which has a bunch of parent and child nodes preset at design time, there is 1 parent node tho which is called developer, that i want to add child nodes to at runtime. When the form first loads im trying to have it check a text file and for each line in the text file add the text/string from that as a child node tot he 'developer' parent node.
vb Dim reader As String = My.Computer.FileSystem.ReadAllText(Application.StartupPath() & "ConfigDevs.txt") Dim strs() As String = Split(reader, Environment.NewLine) For Each s As String In strs
[code]....
Thats what i have so far, how can i set it so 'Dim parentNode As TreeNode = ' points at the 'Developer' node?
