Visual Studio Shortcut To Auto-Add Event Delegate Methods
Sep 2, 2009
In C# adding event handler methods is very easy. You just type "object.event +=" and then press tab twice. Is there anything like this for VB projects? Note: This is for dynamically created controls or controls that are not declared WithEvents.

What it the Visual Studio shortcut to switch to recently edited line of code ? (useful after accidentally pressing Page Down for example). I saw my mother using it but couldn't spot what the combination was. Also couldn't find on internet.

Hidden Features of Visual Studio (2005-2008)?
What are some shortcut keys you know of that make programming faster, easier, or all around more enjoyable?

I have a VB Windows Application in Visual Studio 2003 complete with it's own setup project. What I would like to do is during the installation of that project is to install a shortcut icon on the desktop that points to the location of the .exe file that was just installed on the user's machine. Unfortunately this option in the setup is not easy to find (at least to me) on Visual Studio 2003. What would I need to do in order to get that shortcut icon to pop-up automatically?

In VB Classic, VBA and also in Visual Studio you can dbl click close to the left hand margin of a block of code and it will select the whole of the current block (sub, function etc). In Visual Studio this clickable area is adjacent to the line numbers on the left.Is there a keyboard shortcut that will do the same job? that is, select the "current block".

I am writing my first class-library in VB.NET. My idea is to distribute this library so others may use it in their applications.However, perhaps due to my lack of experience in writing and structuring the library and the classes therein, I noted that the methods/properties are ALL being shown in the IntelliSense of Visual Studio.
The thing is that many of them are only used within the library itself and should NOT be used by the developers (could create a disaster) when they incorporate my library in their application - only a few should be visibile i.e. the ones which are needed by the developer.Thus, my question is: is there a way to hide certain methods/properties of my library from Visual Studio's IntelliSense? Maybe something similar to REM?
EDIT: as mentioned - this is my first library and I now understand that my question could be intepreted in two ways:
1) how to hide something from IntelliSense
2) how to prevent a developer from using and calling certain methods/properties
Of course, the end-result that I want is that the developer is not able to access AT ALL certain methods/properties i.e. No. 2 above.

Is it possible to create a custom start menu shortcut link?
The only possibilities I see in the setup project are shortcuts to folders or primary output.
Update:
What I ended up doing is creating a custom action on commit that dynamically creates the link using Windows Scripting Host. Then on uninstall, removing the link.

My project is built in VB.Net.Many times I find that Visual Studio has added subroutines to my code files even if a subroutine of the exact same name already exists. This can cause debugging nightmares as the new empty routine seems to override the correct routine. I think this can happen if I double-click on a control in the form Design view, but I try not to do this.Is there any way to turn this off?
Example:
Hand entered
Private Sub TS_Main_View_Network_Click Handles TS_Main_View_Network.Click
System added:
Private Sub TS_Main_View_Network_Click( ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles TS_Main_View_Network.Click
I guess that the system adds the second routine because the argument list (which is unneeded but may be required) list is missing from the first routine.

In visual studio programming in Vb.Net you get a special autocomplete around functions. If you add a name in front of a statement the rest of the line is treated like function parameters.
strInEditBy dsInfo.Tables(0).Rows(0).Item("plandesc").ToString()
strInEditBy ( dsInfo.Tables(0).Rows(0).Item("plandesc").ToString() )
I wanted to add a = operator in the place of the ( but unless I type really fast it auto-adds the ( ). How can I turn that off.

I have just installed VS 2010 Premium on my Windows Vista Machine. I've noticed that in VS2008 when I typed for eg " Public property MyProperty() as string " and pressed the enter..I was getting automatically the expected result. Meaning by that , that VS2008 was generating for me the rest of the code. [code] In Visual Studio 2010 I am not getting this anymore. What happened ? Is this feature still working in VS 2010 ?

In VS2008, I can stub out interface members with the following code using TextSelection to insert the implement line and then "simulate" the Enter key by inserting a new line. However, it doesn't work anymore in VS2010.
CodeClass cclass = {Target_Class};
TextSelection txtSel = {After_Class_Declaration_Line};
foreach (string i in interfacesFullName)

Visual studio nicely provides built-in auto-complete functionality for text boxes and combo boxes. I am using the suggest method of auto complete that provides the user with a list of choices filteres by what they have type. The problem I am having is that when the user makes a selection (via the mouse) VS places the selected text into the textbox and also simulates the enter key being pressed on the textbox.In my program the enter keyup event is used to send the text entered in the text box to the a COM port. In order for this to work as desired the user must be able to select an auto-complete option and then add to it so that they can change settings.Is it possible to stop it from triggering that event or to intercept it? I am unsure if it is possible or how to determine the origin of a keypress.
Here is the code for the KeyUp even as well as for the KeyPress Event:
Private Sub txtInput_KeyPress(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.Forms.KeyPressEventArgs) Handles txtInput.KeyPress
If e.KeyChar = Chr(13) Then
e.Handled = True
End If
[code]....
The auto-complete functionality was accomplished through the properties of the control, the only code for that was to generate the auto-complete list.

As I'm typing out Xaml in VB.Net Express 2010, it helpfully finishes certain things for me. Most of the autocomplete is fine, but some of it annoys me and it leads me to wonder if I'm missing something or doing it wrong.
If I type:
<GroupBox Header=
It automatically puts a quotation mark before and after my cursor. I've gotten used to the quotation mark before the cursor - I immediately start typing in whatever property I wanted. But now there is a quotation mark after my cursor! I have to reach over to the other side of my keyboard and press the right arrow key to move past it. I find this insanely aggravating, because it breaks my "flow" while I'm typing. Are you supposed to be able to press a close-at-hand key (like tab, but that doesn't work) to move to the other side of the quotation mark or do they really intend for you to have to constantly use the right arrow key?

I have a method with a custom attribute that lists other methods in the same class that it can call. I'm passing the called method to another class function that will read the attribute and pick one of the methods named in the attribute and return it's delegate. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to do this with reflection or event if it is possible.

Visual Studio and SharpDevelop do not both set up delegates to handle events in the same way. The way they are set up is a little bit different. This makes it difficult to use VS in one place and #Develop in another (on the same project).For Example, in VB, Visual Studio does the following:
Private Sub OK_Button_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles OK_Button.Click
Me.DialogResult = System.Windows.Forms.DialogResult.OK
Me.Close()
End Sub
Friend WithEvents OK_Button As System.Windows.Forms.Button So that the control is declared, not only with a different scope (this can be a problem also, but not the topic of this post) but with a withevents. The event handler is then assigned to it by a handles clause.
[Code]...
The most annoying thing about this, is even if it is done one way, the other ide will redo it, having duplicate declarations, and of course, compile time errors.Does anyone know of a way around this, some way to customize the default handlers? even if it is just some way that they can be turned off, so it can just be typed manually?

I am creating an Excel Add-In using Visual Studio 2010. I would like to run some code when users clicks a combination of keys.Here is the code I have got
Public Class CC
Private Sub ThisAddIn_Startup() Handles Me.Startup
EnableShortCut()
End Sub
Sub A1()
[Code]...
The Add-In when installed shows an error on clicking the short cuts. It says the specific macro cannot be found.The code under the Sub EnableShortCut() works well when it is in an excel vba module. The same won't work when it is added to an Excel Add-In created with Visual Studio.

It is really too bad that Microsoft (who once had the best documentation in the business) has slipped so badly. Good documentation does not really require analysis, though, admittedly, it is a lot of work. To wit: for each and every single method, function, event and operator provide the following: a brief topical functional description including any parameters, a detailed description of how the object works, a workable example of the code needed to make this object do something useful and links to all possible associated objects (See Also).
I see pages upon pages of useless text and links to other pages full of links. This rapidly descends into a crevace of unbelievable complexity for the developer trying to find out something truly simple like filtering a DataGridView without changing the data connection. (As it turns out this is very simple to do but I could not find a single example of how to do it in the Visual Studio documentation.)

I have to develop an application using MS Visual Studio 2005 or above with the following objective:
* The application should allow users to create as many new forms as they want and each form should behave like a MS Visual Studio WinForm. By saying that it should be a container for drag and drop of controls from the toolbox that I will develop....
* Once the user design's each screen to his taste by placing various controls on the form, he should be able to save the form as a screen. Of course I have to provide functionality for each of the controls such as if he drags a button on to the form, he should be able to specify what action it has to perfom when clicked when the application is put into run mode. Quite similar to regular windows form button.
* My application should have two modes: a DESIGN MODE, where user can drag, drop controls and specify what they should do when put into RUN MODE. This is quite similar to MS Visual Studio designer.
* Last but not least is to be able to access the application via the browser with the same look and feel his desktop version.
