View 2 RepliesI've had a bit of a look around the net and on the forums but I've yet to find an answer to my question. I've got Visual Basic 2008 Express and I'm trying to write some registry entries, I can write strings fine just using

I'm trying to implement code that can determine the value of a registry key dword value and put a check mark in the checkbox depending on if the key exist, does not exist, or equals ffffffff in hex (4294967295 in Decimal).[code]

I am trying to change the DWORD value in a specific registry path. It starts with the user who is entering the value in decimal into a text box. Then with the click of a button, the application takes that value and change the existing value of the DWORD to the new one typed into the text box. I think I have manage to get it to work with "strings" but I seem to get stuck when it comes to the DWORD key. I have a feeling it have something to do with the hexadecimal value which is set by default. Do I need to create a converter?
View 1 RepliesI've been trying to convert this .reg file:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionInternet Settings]
"ProxyEnable"=dword:00000001
"ProxyServer"="socks=localhost:8080"
[Code]....
But so far, all the values have been getting muddled up (They are put in the wrong place or with others) and some values aren't added. I think it's because all the values are of different types, but I'm not sure how to fix it and specify what type of value they are.
I need an equivalent to dword_ptr.A dword_ptr is 32 bits long when it's compiled on a 32 bit system and 64 bits long when compiled on a 64 bit system (more on this later). Odldy enough, a dword_ptr is not a pointer rather its data. I could use the vb "object" data type except that's supposed to be a slow method.I also don't know enough about the dword_ptr to know if it is strictly set at compile time or if it is estalished at runtime.The definition from ms for a Dword_Ptr is:"Unsigned long type for pointer precision. Use when casting a pointer to a long type to perform pointer arithmetic. (Also commonly used for general 32-bit parameters that have been extended to 64 bits in 64-bit Windows. )
View 2 RepliesMy goal is to read a data streaming from a machine the streaming is divided in tre main parts,the first is a 10 byte array that declare the length of the second and third part.The second one, the header, is a 22 DWORD (*32bit) ( 88 byte ) structured of mixed data types.I can easly read the value inside this header when the DWORD contains just one information using something like: [code] My problem starts because some of these DWORD contains several indipendent informations, for example DWORD #4 [ channel 2 peaks 31..16] [channel 1 peaks 15..0].For what I understood the first 16 bits ( so 2 bytes) are used to store the information of the first channel , while the second 16 bits are used for the second channel, I tryed converting the first 2 byte with System.BitConverter.ToUInt16()but without success.Can someone explain me what to do and how these numbers are supposed to be stored?
View 6 RepliesI am trying to release my program now and I have a quick (hopefully quick) question concerning serial numbers. I want to be able to store the trial serial number so if the user uninstalls and reinstalls they won't get another evaluation period free of charge. My concern is that some crafty person will simply move the database files in and out of those installs and keep going indefinately. Although I have some protections built into the database itself in case the program runs out, I just want one extra layer of protection. Is there a way to store the serial number in the registry when entered and check for that entry whenever the program is installed using Windows Installer 3.1?
View 2 RepliesI am wanting to limit my applications to be free for the first 15 uses. I am wondering about the best way to do this.Should I save the number of uses in the registry? Is this the best place? (Can't people just delete the registry setting and then have full use again?)
View 3 RepliesI am using zipforge.net to archive files in a small backup program I am creating. Everything works fine however if I try to archive a large number of files the process of zipping them gets slower the further along in the job it gets.
Example: I have a directory that contains a little over 100,000 files in it. Each file is only about 200k of text. When I use the zipforge zip class it starts zip'ing very quickly but as it gets about 40% of the way through the directory it starts to slow down... at about 60% its working at a snails pace.
Memory usage for my solution also goes up proportionate to the archive file size as it grows. Currently it takes around 26hours to backup this directory which only contains 4 gigs worth of information.
If I use a program like winzip I can zip the folder in less than an hour. I am thinking there has to be a way to write to the end of the zip file without having to open it every time or without keeping it open. My backup software scans the specified folder and writes each file path and name into a text file. Then it reads the text file line by line and passes the path + file info to the zipforge addfile().
I read somewhere that older VB .net (pre VB .NET 2005?) couldn't use overloaded operators in a C# class. Is it true for overloaded cast operators?Either way do you guys think it's a disadvantage for a C# class library not to include them and arithmetic methods as actual methods for other languages, like:
ToDouble
ToFloat
FromDouble
Add

I converted it like this but now i dont know how to declare the DWORD since WORD is already a UInt32
I am trying to figure out how to replace text in a text file on a specific line number. (for testing, line number 4).

Currently, I am try to get the email addresses that have been saved or stored by the user of the computer. This isn't the emails that the user has sent or received, or the contacts he/she has in his address book. Just simply the email accounts that have been accessed from the computer.I know that there are some locations stored in the registry that have the email account. The email addresses that are used on the current computer. I just can't seem to find them on my computer.I am not sure if the registry is the only place to find it or if it stored on the web browser such as internet explorer or google chrome.
View 1 RepliesI am writing an application that connects to a specific com port. This com port can change depending on how many physical ports are on the PC, and if other USB devices have installed com ports before this one.
I have the communication to the com port all working great, but I need to get the com port description not just the "COM#" which is all I currently get.
I found in the registry where the description is stored but am having trouble doing what I need.
In this key:
Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMControlSet001ControlClass{4D36E978-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
there is a varied number of sub keys. The are numbered 0000-NNNN depending on how many ports you have. Inside each of these keys, there are multiple values, although I am only interested in one or 2 of them.
My problem is, that I do not know how to get a list of the subkeys (the 0000-NNNN keys/folders) from the original key I posted. I have looked through a few registry tutorials, and I can view the default value in the listed key, but I could not find how to list the subkeys of the listed key.
Does anyone have any sample code they could share that shows how I can get a listing of subkeys, and then run through those subkeys checking for a specific value in one of the strings contained in the subkey?
I am using VB.net 2008 and Windows XP.
I have several programs that must write to HKLM in XP and Windows 7/64 Pro.The programs work in VB6 but not in VB.Net 2008 on target machines. It does works on our development machine. [code]I just cannot figure out why VB6 works but .net doesn't and fails only on the target machine not the development machine.

Does anyone know how to use the registry section in Inno Setup to add a registry key that make a program start with windows when a Checkbox is checked in the setup wizard? If anyone know please step forward. I am getting near the launch of a program and it would be nice to include this feature.

The part in bold is the part i need to be able to change as i am having to write a little program to change the background on the desktop.
I should be ok once i know more on how to do things like this.
I just bet the answer to this question already exists, however I saw no search mechanism under the forum. Anyhow, I would like to change registry data, and this code is asking for an instance to the object.
Dim RegKey As RegistryKey = My.Computer.Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwa reAnyDWGSoftwareDWGtoPDFProSettings", True)
RegKey.SetValue("OutputPDFFileOpt", 1)
Finally, I want to apply this setting to the program on four different computers (local, and three others on the network).
I wrote an application to manage several installers and I wanted to throw in some registry settings as well. Unfortunately the following code is not writing to the registry, nor is it returning any exceptions.I'm running Visual Basic 2010 Express as administrator using Windows 7 64 bit, I can manually add the values, and I can add them from a .reg file manually but not even by calling the .reg file as a new process (it asks for permission, says it succeeded, but nothing changed).The key already exists, all I need to do is add two values.
My.Computer.Registry.LocalMachine.OpenSubKey("SOFTWAREMicrosoftInternet ExplorerMAINFeatureControlFEATURE_BROWSER_EMULATION", True)
