I have built a Windows Service and this runs great but what I would like to do is have this service check a website every 5 mins and ensure that a status code of 200 (Success) is returned.

I've a website that puts info into a mySQL database and a windows service (written in VB.Net) that polls the db and actions what's in there.However, occasionally it stalls and rather than having to RDP into the server, I want superusers to click on a button to restart the service.I can get the button to say, do a directory listing of c: output to a test file so the whole 'getting a command to execute on a remote server' issue works. However, I can't restart services.I assume this is a security thing (although it has full rights to c: I thought I'd sussed that already).The website runs under the normal IUSR_user so am I doing something really stupid or can someone explain how to get the service to be restarted ?
View 4 RepliesI have a windows forms application that scrapes a website to retrieve some data. I would like to implement the same functionality as a windows service. The reason for this is to allow the program to run 24/7 without having a user signed in.
To that end, my current version of the program uses a web browser control (system.windows.forms.webbrowser) to navigate the pages, click the buttons, allow scripts to do their thing, etc. I cannot figure out a way to do the same without the web browser control, but the web browser control cannot be instantiated in a windows service (because there is no user interface in a web service).
i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:

I am trying to communicate with a Windows service on a remote machine on the network but i keep getting an exception saying the following: "System.InvalidOperationException: Cannot open Service Control Manager on computer 'machine001'. I did this by executing an OleDbCommand with a query and a connection string.How do I accomplish the same thing with the new "Windows Search Service" (Windows Server 2008) by using VB.NET? Does this work the same way so that I only need to change the Provider name which has been "MSIDXS.1" up to now? Case true, what is the new Provider name?

Can you have multiple instances of the same Service class (that bind to different addresses or ports), like this?

Or will that cause problems? Should we use two different classes instead?
We have a server with multiple services written in .Net 1.1 and 3.5 running on a Win 2003 server. Everything runs fine, but when we stop a certain service, an unrelated service stops. I have checked and neither has any dependencies. The service we stop is in 3.5, and the unrelated service that incorrectly stops is in 1.1. We get no error messages, nor event log errors, so we are baffled.Does anyone have an idea as to what may be causing this?

I recently reimaged my PC and regrabbed one of our projects from Source Safe. In our solution we have a web service that normally runs on a server, however we can build the webservice on our localhost for debugging as well. However, now whenever I grab the project from source safe it is building the webservice as a website instead of a developer web server.

I have the project installer class in the service project and I've added the "Standard output etc.." from the service project as custom actions for the Deployment Project. When I attempt to install it, I get the error "Specified service already exists", which shouldn't happen (even though the service does exist) because the installer should be removing the old service and installing the new one.
I've checked that the versions are different, and that the Product Code is also different, also RemovePreviousVersions is set to true. I'm writing a windows service (MacTimeFix.exe) to fix the Windows time on a Macintosh (it's like this: i live in Moscow (GMT+03:00), and Mac OS thinks that the system time is GMT+00:00 and adds 03:00 to it< and Windows thinks that system time is the local time).I need to execute my code when my VB app is closed. (it happens with the shutdown of Windows) The form is invisible (hidden), and the user mustn't click anything except windws shutdown button. It is a service. When i write a Form1_FormClosing sub, it works only on Alt+F4 or CloseButton and doesn't work when the app is stopped from Windows Task Manager or whatever also.I need a way to execute sub when app is closed with taskkill (without /force) or a way to execute a several app on Winshutdown.

I am working on a .NET Windows Service where I am trying to store settings that will be used when the service is started and while it is running. I have searched through posts on SO and found that using the Settings in the properties of the project is great for use with console and winforms applications. However, Google and SO are silent when it pertains to storing these settings with a windows service.

I have an application called WindowsPRO available from my filesharewebsit This application is intended for those in school to easily be able to do several daily tasks such as calculate and use notepad within one window. I have been working on this application in part with the help of MSDN.Back OT, currently when I click the "Check for updates" I use process.start to open my website. Not very complicated is it. What I want to do is open a form in whichchecks for the update from my site. Whenever I upload a file, I'll upload it as a .zip onto my site and always name it like: "Application name v1.0" or whatever the version number is. That is the only thing that changes.
When the user presses the check for updates, I want to checkhe site in background for a "higher" version number. If my application is v1.2, I want it to check for anything higher than 1.2. So if I have on the site 1.2.2, or 1.3, I want it to check for the highest number version and download it.My question simply is, how do I check for a "higher version" from a website?

If the user check a checkbox, the value is written as checked in the data field (MS Access).The problem is when I search for the user information, I need the information from the Data base to populate(return) to the windows form. Now I want to design another windows form that I would call from the service while running it I know that with the help of ServiceController class we could interact with windows service from a windows application but am not sure of the other way round implementation....
