Windows Service Not Showing Up When Installed With Setup Project?
Aug 31, 2009
I have a simple windows Service developed in VS.net 2008 and VB.net. When I install the service using Installutil.exe from the command prompt it is working like a charm.
When I try to add a setup project and set the output and build and install it though it says successfully installed, it is not showing up in the services.
The event log shows that it is successfully installed. I just did check the registry, it did place the assemblies in HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftinstallerassemblies.
But I don't understand why it is not showing up in the services listing. I refreshed and restarted.
Now that I've got this service that runs really great on my 32-bit development machine when I use InstallUtil.exe to install it, I'm ready to take it to the next level and generate something that I can use to install it on my 64-bit production server. I've never done this before, so I'm looking for detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to "publish" this Windows Service that I've written, or make it such that I can take some kind of file (or set of files) and install my service on another machine. I'm looking for a way to do this using Visual Studio 2010. I think the processes are different than in previous versions of Visual Studio.
I've been busy with work and other bits and bobs and not really had much time for programming... but anyway, I have just written a fairly simple windows service in VB.NET and although I can install it on my PCs/servers using the command line InstallUtil.exe component, this isnt ideal for other people that may need to install it without my assistance.
So basically I just need to know how to get a normal Setup and Deployment VS project to install this service itself... I thought it would be as simple as selecting the service assembly to include in the deployment project and building it, but unfortunately that seems to do naff all. Do I need to use a 'Custom Action' in the setup project (and if so, how/what do I do?)
I need to install a windows service via an .msi for many tablets which is nooooo problem. The problem is, the tablets currently have the service running which was installed by installutil. So when my installer runs, regardless of Remove Previous Version is true, it stops stating the service already exists and to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs. So I wrote a console app which preceeds the primary output as follows:
Sub Main() Try Dim filename As String = "C:Program FilesRSCProjectServiceSetupRSCProjectService.exe" 'Dim filename As String = "C:RSCProjectServiceRSCProjectServiceinDebugRSCProjectService.exe" If System.IO.File.Exists(filename) Then
I need to create a setup project, the main project can't be installed without a program called infragistic.
How can I do ask for infragistic program before to install the main project? If infragistic is not installed, the setup project must install it, I mean execute the infragistic installer before the main installer.
EDIT: I'm starting a bounty on this question. For the moment, I've moved on and am developing my application using VS2010 Pro Beta, but I'd really like it to be able to be built with express edition, since we are generally not a .net shop and even if one or two developers have VS PRO it will not be available to our entire team.
To be the accepted answer and claim the bounty, you must provide sample code and instructions that will allow a Windows Service to be installed and uninstalled using vb 2008 express edition. You don't necessarily need to start with my code (but the essentials of it are included below).
is it possible to take and run vb.net windows application setup as windows service...if possible means how to take and run vb.net windows application setup as windows service....is it possible to run the vb.net windows application setup automatically 5 mins once....if possible means...how to run vb.net windows application setup automatically...want to run 5 minutes once automatically..
I created a new Windows Service and a stand alone set up program for it. To the solution I added a set up program project and included both programs as outlined in [url]... However, when I run the Setup program, I do not see the my new service in the services window after the set up program completes. Is there additional work that needs to be done to have the program install the windows service correctly or do I need to include the [url]... program and a batch file to get it installed?
i have made a window application programme in vb.net.i want to make a setup sothat it can easily install on another computer.plz help me....Pramod Gupta
I've created a windows service and started a deployment project for it. I have the project installer class in the service project and I've added the "Standard output etc.." from the service project as custom actions for the Deployment Project. When I attempt to install it, I get the error "Specified service already exists", which shouldn't happen (even though the service does exist) because the installer should be removing the old service and installing the new one.
I've checked that the versions are different, and that the Product Code is also different, also RemovePreviousVersions is set to true. Can anyone tell me why it isn't uninstalling my old service when I update then install again? .S: MODS: DO NOT MARK MY POST AS ANSWERED, IT IS RUDE, YOU HAVE NO IDEA IF YOU'VE ANSWERED MY QUESTION!Sorry, it gets ignored in my signature.Mods
I have developed an application in VB.Net 2005 Express. This app was then transformed into a windows service using a template I found on this forum. I am able to install the service using InstallUtil.exe and I am very happy, BUT the powers that be me are asking for a more eligant method of installing / upgrading the service. All of my reading suggests I need to upgrade to VS 2008 Enterprise to achieve this goal. Before I lash out and reach for my credit card, can someone confirm the minimum requirement to achieve a pretty service installation.
I'm currently starting work on my first windows service and I've encountered what I find to be a strange error. For some reason the compiler is telling me that a whole bunch of typical classes (such as Image, Bitmap, Graphics, etc) do not exist. For example, these simple lines of code, which work perfectly in a normal project, return a bunch of errors:
Bitmap b = new Bitmap(destWidth, destHeight); //Error 13 The type or namespace name 'Bitmap' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage((Image)b); //Error 17 The type or namespace name 'Image' could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?)
i create a class library or use already created class library in my windows service project. I have 1 dll file then how can i use that file in my project.?Logic is my Greatest Asset !
I am trying to work on a service where I need to export a report into a folder under the service project and email it to the user. The delete the report when complete. The issue I am having is I need to know how to access a folder under the project. I know you can use System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory to get into the bin where the excuting file is but I want to get to a folder is this possible? If not is there a way of creating the folder under the bin directory and accessing it. I can manually create a folder under the bin but didnt really want to do that.
I have a web service that I'd like to include as a project reference inside a windows forms application. (The application will be running on non-networked hardware.) I could simply copy the *.vb files I need into my forms project, but I'd rather not fork the code base.It wasn't hard to include the ASP project in the windows forms solution. However, I can't figure out how to reference it in my forms code.
I am creating a windows service in VS2010, and in order to store a user's input during installation I've been told to write it to a file called app.config.However i cannot find this app.config file? Does it create one in a windows service project? or just in a WCF windows service project?
I have a service projecwith a deployment project in a solution. The installation is successful, service runs ok. However each time after installation I will have to use ervices.msc to start up the software or restart the machine, any idea how I can start the services as soon a
I m doing a vb.net project merely completed. now while the setup is being installed i need to get the location where the user selected as the target location.
I want to create a real setup project for my application so when someone want to download it he can run only setup, not default setup that provide me VB . How can I do that?
i have a Windows service that is hosting a WCF service through net.tcp and this is working great. I have also created a WCF service application. I am trying to add the net.tcp service reference to the service application. Then I add it to the GAC that goes ok but if I try to RegAsm the WCF service application to allow it to be called from Server.CreateObject I get the error:
Warning: Type library exporter encountered a type that derives from a generic class and is not marked as [ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)]. Class interfaces cannot be exposed for such types. Consider marking the type with [ClassInterface(ClassInterfaceType.None)] and exposing an explicit interface as the default interface to COM using the ComDefaultInterface attribute.
It does not work. I have tried to call it through a class library but this does not work either as the end point is not set correctly.
I have created setup file and installed successfully. while removing the Application from my system by using Add/Remove programs I got the Error as below,"Error 1001. Exception occured while the installation.System.Io.filenotFoundException.could not load the file of assembly file or one of its dependencies. the system cannot find the file specified."..After that i got one more Error box that says "fatal Error during installation"..By the above errors i could not uninstall the Application from my system. How can i solve this error? and is there any other way to uninstall the application from my Machine?
I got a problem with my setup I had set the prerequiest download property to download from the same location. Now i am in a problem that my setup dose not check for the already installed prerequiest it starts the prerequiest installation no mater if they are installed or not. after the installation of these prerequiest it says to restart the computer and after restart it starts the prerequiest setup again.
I'm using the setup method to deploy an app I wrote. The program installs fine, but If I want to reinstall it I get an error message saying the program is already installed and I have to uninstall it first. Is there a flag somewhere when I create the setup file to allow it be installed over itself?
I have a situation with an application of mine where I noticed I get a different result when the application is installed in comparison to it running in Visual Studio. If the application is installed a certain aberration pops up in this computer graphics application at a certain point in one of the screens but if I run the same group of settings or you could say the same "screen" running the application from Visual Studio I don't see the aberration ever happen. I tried deleting the bin and obj folders and then rebuilding before creating an installation and it doesn't change anything and whether I use InstallShield or create an installation using ClickOnce I still see the same issue. I have Enable application framework unchecked but found it makes no difference checked or unchecked
I want to create a setup which requires Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and .NET Framework 3.5. If this software isn't installed, the Setup should offer the user to install them now.
I've finally got a project compiled and tested and ready to roll out.I have discovered that the "Publish" option is not what it seems, and that we must create a separate "Setup Project" to carry out the task of installing the files. This is not the most intuitive process I've seen, and the online help on that subject is not easy to understand.I was hoping that someone could direct me to a tutorial or guide that would step me through the specific approach I need. Many of the other guides online are vague and address multiple scenarios and do not separate the approaches very well.I have the contents of my project in /bin/release. It runs nicely by iteself with no errors. Here's what I need:
1. To create a setup exe that I can distribute that will install my software, with all of the supporting (resource) files and folders. 2. I need the setup process to force the installer to "agree" to a EULA. 3. I'd would like to provide an image on the installation screen/popup. 4. I would like the software registered in the registry and rely on it being there in the registry. 5. I need it to default to program filesprojectname (it does by default)
I am not sure how to do this, I need to output what service pack is installed on a windows 7 machine along with what antivirus is installed. Any idea on how I would get that information using VB?
I new to this Forum and relatively new to VB programming. I have read some really good posts here and thought I would ask about a perplexing problem I'm having. I createdindows Form application, built it and deployed it with no problems. However, when I added a small block of code, re-built the app and went to add the app to the Project Output Group in the file system editor the project was not in the Project drop down list. I closed the Setup project and deleted it from the project folder and checked my code and re-built the app and tried the Set Up project again with the same result
