View 2 RepliesNow that I've got this service that runs really great on my 32-bit development machine when I use InstallUtil.exe to install it, I'm ready to take it to the next level and generate something that I can use to install it on my 64-bit production server. I've never done this before, so I'm looking for detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to "publish" this Windows Service that I've written, or make it such that I can take some kind of file (or set of files) and install my service on another machine. I'm looking for a way to do this using Visual Studio 2010. I think the processes are different than in previous versions of Visual Studio.
View 4 RepliesI've been busy with work and other bits and bobs and not really had much time for programming... but anyway, I have just written a fairly simple windows service in VB.NET and although I can install it on my PCs/servers using the command line InstallUtil.exe component, this isnt ideal for other people that may need to install it without my assistance.
So basically I just need to know how to get a normal Setup and Deployment VS project to install this service itself... I thought it would be as simple as selecting the service assembly to include in the deployment project and building it, but unfortunately that seems to do naff all. Do I need to use a 'Custom Action' in the setup project (and if so, how/what do I do?)
I have a simple windows Service developed in VS.net 2008 and VB.net. When I install the service using Installutil.exe from the command prompt it is working like a charm.
When I try to add a setup project and set the output and build and install it though it says successfully installed, it is not showing up in the services.
The event log shows that it is successfully installed. I just did check the registry, it did place the assemblies in HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftinstallerassemblies.
But I don't understand why it is not showing up in the services listing. I refreshed and restarted.
I need to install a windows service via an .msi for many tablets which is nooooo problem. The problem is, the tablets currently have the service running which was installed by installutil. So when my installer runs, regardless of Remove Previous Version is true, it stops stating the service already exists and to uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs.So I wrote a console app which preceeds the primary output as follows:
Sub Main()
Try
Dim filename As String = "C:Program FilesRSCProjectServiceSetupRSCProjectService.exe"
'Dim filename As String = "C:RSCProjectServiceRSCProjectServiceinDebugRSCProjectService.exe"
If System.IO.File.Exists(filename) Then
[code]....
i don want to build a deploy project but just a normal VB.NET Project and that project is kind of extracting files so how can i include files (compress) to project executable app then when i click "Extract" it will extract.last time, I use CHILKATZIP and ZIPForge.NET but it only compress another exe howabout its own project.Thanx,Code Quest
View 1 RepliesWhen a user click the .msi, i want a folder called "Your Files", which comes with two small images by default, to be created in C:UsersYourNameDocuments. In short, MyDocuments.
What i did is put the following code in program.cs:
string myDocuments = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.MyDocuments);
string downloadArea = System.IO.Path.Combine(myDocuments, "Your Files");
System.IO.Directory.CreateDirectory(downloadArea);
Just before:
Application.Run(new mainForm());
The problem is, this folder will be created every time the user runs the application which is not a good solution, also in this case there is no place to load the two images so it can be loaded while the folder is created. I want the folder to be created once preferably while installing the application, so even when i uninstall the folder "Your Files" and its sub files be deleted automatically along with the program files. I tried to do it via Setup Project, but i couldn't.
How to make a setup file of VB project application
View 1 RepliesI have a setup and deployment project that installs my application. During installation, I create a hierarchy of folders under the C: drive.
However, when I use add/remove programs to uninstall my application, I do NOT want this hierarchy of folders to be removed. How is this possible?
Also, when creating the folders, I set "AlwaysCreate" to True. If one of the folders already exists, will it be replaced with my new empty folder? If so, how can I prevent this.

View 2 RepliesUnder VB.Net 2005, I created a Setup Project which produced installation files for a windows application. I placed the mdb file in the User's Application Data Folder and remapped the DataDirectory to Environment.SpecialFolder.ApplicationData at runtime. Unfortunately, sometimes the system just did create the mdb file at the Application Directory.
An example was that I installed the program in Windows 7 under a normal user account. I chose inside the installer that the program would be made available to everyone. After installation, the mdb file would be created automatically for the Administrator account but not for the normal user account. For XP, the whole thing worked fine. I am tempted to write a routine to check and create the mdb file if it is not present, but why does this happens and what other opinions do I have?
I have developed a couple of windows applications in Visual Vasic Express 2008. To my horror, I have just discoved that the Setup Project is not available in the express edition.I have been searching to discover which DLLs I will need to include when using my 3rd party Deployment Application.
I know which ones I need for my 3rd Party Controls, but am stuck on which Microsoft DLLs will be needed the Microsoft Controls I have used, plus any other Common DLLs that are always needed.
I have tried searching Microsoft's site but without success.

View 9 RepliesI have created a windows application which Installs Multiple MSI's based on some condition. The project is created in Visual Studio 2008 with .Net framework 3.5; If this application runs in a machine which has atleast Dot Net 2.0 installs, it works fine. but the system without framework 2.0 throws an error "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)"
How can I stop my application from crashing. I tried giving a check in the Main(), but it is not even firing the Main(); Is there any way I can give a prerequisite, But not in the Publish, Coz i am using the output exe and not the clickonce output..
I am seeking advice or clarification of feasibility.Ihave a VB.NET (2008) application that, as an administrative tool,generates a user id, password and business role, and creates a file on disk with the aforementioned as content. This file needs to be deployed to users via a setup program that will put the file in a fixed path I specify. I was wondering if it is possible (and if so how complex it might b to mimic the functionality of the IDEs setup and deployment wizard within the application (that is to say buildthe msi file and setup.exesupplying the parameter of installation path).

View 4 RepliesI've finally got a project compiled and tested and ready to roll out.I have discovered that the "Publish" option is not what it seems, and that we must create a separate "Setup Project" to carry out the task of installing the files.This is not the most intuitive process I've seen, and the online help on that subject is not easy to understand.I was hoping that someone could direct me to a tutorial or guide that would step me through the specific approach I need. Many of the other guides online are vague and address multiple scenarios and do not separate the approaches very well.I have the contents of my project in /bin/release. It runs nicely by iteself with no errors.Here's what I need:
1. To create a setup exe that I can distribute that will install my software, with all of the supporting (resource) files and folders.
2. I need the setup process to force the installer to "agree" to a EULA.
3. I'd would like to provide an image on the installation screen/popup.
4. I would like the software registered in the registry and rely on it being there in the registry.
5. I need it to default to program filesprojectname (it does by default)

View 16 RepliesI new to this Forum and relatively new to VB programming. I have read some really good posts here and thought I would ask about a perplexing problem I'm having. I createdindows Form application, built it and deployed it with no problems. However, when I added a small block of code, re-built the app and went to add the app to the Project Output Group in the file system editor the project was not in the Project drop down list. I closed the Setup project and deleted it from the project folder and checked my code and re-built the app and tried the Set Up project again with the same result
View 2 RepliesI need helps on the following of my questions. I want to separater my Windows application project into two parts.(Currently how i code is all my class, module, form will be in one single project)
Now I want to separate them into two projects under one solution.That is One project will only include pure design which is win forms.And another project will include DB processing and background business logic.
Can I know how to do that??Currently only way I can think of is pass the required win form control to the Class Project. But I don't think it is a good way. And at some point, I may need to use all controls on the form to perform a single job. So, I end up passing all controls to the Class Project.
I want to try to google it but don't know which key words I should use to search. My vocab power is not that good in english.If you know how or have some samples (even a button click or display some text sample) , please kindly share me about this.
The reason I do this is because I want to separate my business logic with design. So, later me or other developer who handle my projects can focus on business logic if something went wrong. I think this can make the projects easier to debug and study.And also easier to pass to end user if we update or fix the error.In so, we don't need to give the whole set up package to user. we only need to pass them the dll class.
I wanna use the C# code file in VB.Net project Which is windows based application. But that C# class is not using in VB.NET application. How Can I perform this task.
View 4 RepliesI have a web service that I'd like to include as a project reference inside a windows forms application. (The application will be running on non-networked hardware.) I could simply copy the *.vb files I need into my forms project, but I'd rather not fork the code base.It wasn't hard to include the ASP project in the windows forms solution. However, I can't figure out how to reference it in my forms code.
View 2 RepliesI am having an Activex Application (dll) which contains a third party control ie a Chart Control, as well as a Windows Application(.EXE). I am using that dll project in my exe application in order to populate the Activex user Control. If i double-click on the Activex Control, how can i pass an event handler from this dll Project to Windows application? If this event gets worked successfully, i have to load a screen from that windows application.
When the user clicks on the Activex Control, ie the Chart Control, is there any way to send a event handler from dll project to Windows Application?
