Setup And Deployment Project That Installs My Application ?
Jan 21, 2009
I have a setup and deployment project that installs my application. During installation, I create a hierarchy of folders under the C: drive.
However, when I use add/remove programs to uninstall my application, I do NOT want this hierarchy of folders to be removed. How is this possible?
Also, when creating the folders, I set "AlwaysCreate" to True. If one of the folders already exists, will it be replaced with my new empty folder? If so, how can I prevent this.

We're in the process of releasing software and i've noticed that our standalone version (Windows forms) reinstalls for each users, the issue for this is that we sell to colleges and generally they install of network shares. When the software tries installing for a user it can't find the network share (e.g. permission denied).
How can i stop the installer from launching when the user launches the software.
Reminds me of how Microsoft Office use to be back in the days of 2000.

I'm facing a major problem with a Deployment Project I created to install one of my applications.I am using the ENGLISH IDE of the Visual Studio 2008 - even though my end users will have German environments. This is why I set the
Localization = German
Property in the Deployment Project's Properties. The UI of the generated setup is German, so all's fine there. However, the setup installs the ENGLISH .Net Framework. I have not found any way around this.The problem are at least twofold:
1. An English Framework on a German PC might cause instabilities.
2. It's a big flaw to see UI inconsistencies (i.e. the UI and Setup of the application is German while the NET Framework shows certain elements in English, e.g. the DisplayName property of cultures)how can I get the project to install the localized .NET Framework?

Have built a project and associated it with a Setup&Deployment Project. The S&D project needs to contain 2 main folders (under User's Desktop) with various formats of files (xmls, txts, dlls) inside them and several subfolders. How can i copy/import these 2 folders and there sub-files/folders into my s&d project?
When adding them in the usual way, they are copied and defined a source path onto the current pc. You can understand what errors this might create when an another targeted pc does not contain those files to the exact location. Is there any way to copy them locally or somehow import them?

For my .Net desktop apps I usually create an MSI installer (I create a 2nd project in my solution, a Setup & Deployment project) and I zip the setup.exe file with the <appname>.msi files together and put them up for download on my site. The installer will go through the process of asking where they would like to install the application (it creates the needed shortcuts and everything).
Right now I'm looking at adding a feature to some of these programs where it'll periodically check it's corresponding xml file on my web server and see if there's a newer version of itself available. I have this portion working just fine, where I'm stuck is that I would like to have it download a separate msi installer to update itself.
The idea is that it would download this different msi file, execute it while the app closes itself. This msi would not ask any questions, it would simply update the needed files in whatever location the first msi installer put the app. When this updater msi is done, it would just re-start the application.How would I go about making an msi installer that doesn't have any prompts and installs the application where ever the first msi installer put it (where ever the user chose to install it to)?

I would like to add a choice of icons to the desktop shortcut I add in setup/deployment. I can add one icon, but when I run the project there is no option for changing it. The "change icon" button is greyed out. I've made a dll containing 3 icons and added it to the setup/deployment project (also added it to the test project).

Is it possible to make a setup and deployment project in VB.net 2008, every site i have looked at on google says to just select it from the project list. It isnt in the project list for me to select.Are these types of projects not available in the express version?How can I make an installer, other than using one of the setup and deployment projects? (I know there is a publish button, but that doesn't make a proper installer and installs to the appdata folder which is not what i want it to do)

I have a VB.NET Application and I am developing a deployment project in VS 2008.
I need to give the user the choice to allow the application to start when windows start (but this should be optional)
Then in my application there should be an option to remove the application from the windows start up folder.

I've been busy with work and other bits and bobs and not really had much time for programming... but anyway, I have just written a fairly simple windows service in VB.NET and although I can install it on my PCs/servers using the command line InstallUtil.exe component, this isnt ideal for other people that may need to install it without my assistance.
So basically I just need to know how to get a normal Setup and Deployment VS project to install this service itself... I thought it would be as simple as selecting the service assembly to include in the deployment project and building it, but unfortunately that seems to do naff all. Do I need to use a 'Custom Action' in the setup project (and if so, how/what do I do?)

The project is created in Visual Studio 2008 with .Net framework 3.5; If this application runs in a machine which has atleast Dot Net 2.0 installs, it works fine. but the system without framework 2.0 throws an error "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135)"
How can I stop my application from crashing. I tried giving a check in the Main(), but it is not even firing the Main(); Is there any way I can give a prerequisite, But not in the Publish, Coz i am using the output exe and not the clickonce output..

I have a icon for my application that I set in the project properties window there is a little drop down box to browse to the icon location. While debugging everything is good. Once I build the app and place it on a PC and manually start the app all is good. My app starts with windows and now every time the program goes to start I get an error that the icon cannot be found in the DocumentandSettingUSERNAME folder. So the question is do I have to place my app icon in this folder? In design I have the icon in the binDebug folder and that is were I point to in the Project properties page.
I am using VS 2008 VB.net.

Using Visual Studio 2010, Windows 7.Setting up project on one machine, then attempting deployment it on another machine with Windows 7 on it:When it comes to deployment, every time I have one to do, it is like pulling teeth.I am in file system setup, and I have a custom folder created with DefaultLocation set at [CommonAppDataFolder].Supposably you can use the "Common Files Folder" too, but that did not work either.What is happening is, I have three files in this folder, and two of them copy over just fine, when I look at the ProgramData/Tachufind folder, both of those files are in there, but no sign whatsoever of the third file.I have tried deleting and then re-copying the file back in, to no avail.I have tried setting various properties, to see if that will change anything, to no avail. Can't Microsoft make this easier, this is deployment-hell! Is there another application you can use to deploy a project without losing your sanity?

When a user click the .msi, i want a folder called "Your Files", which comes with two small images by default, to be created in C:UsersYourNameDocuments. In short, MyDocuments.
What i did is put the following code in program.cs:
string myDocuments = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.MyDocuments);
string downloadArea = System.IO.Path.Combine(myDocuments, "Your Files");
System.IO.Directory.CreateDirectory(downloadArea);
Just before:
Application.Run(new mainForm());
The problem is, this folder will be created every time the user runs the application which is not a good solution, also in this case there is no place to load the two images so it can be loaded while the folder is created. I want the folder to be created once preferably while installing the application, so even when i uninstall the folder "Your Files" and its sub files be deleted automatically along with the program files. I tried to do it via Setup Project, but i couldn't.
