I need to grab a list of all networked computers, and I definitely include systems on the wireless
network in that list. I'm just not sure how to approach this. Being able to enumerate through a
'tree' of all networks and systems available would be a major plus.

My method for doing that is setting up a home network, basically, on one computer, put a file there, and share that file on the network. The other computer would then connect to the network (through my application) and find the file and read it. I know this is very long. I am using two computer to connect to each other via serial port, I have made a program in VB that allows me to read from the serial port then store whatever that character is to a variable. The only problem is I have to hit a button to read in from the serial port and pass the character to the variable. Is there any way to do this automatically?
View 6 RepliesI am currently improving an existing handheld application, this app makes live calls to our network over the wireless connection, if the wireless connection is not established I am displaying a holding screen to the user, this screen rechecks connection every three seconds.I want to put a button on this screen that closes down the application if the user does not want to wait any longer. At the moment I am using the application.exit command, however it continues to finish the first original thread (i.e. trying to process the dataset) before actually closing the application, I am looking for a way to kill the application there and then!

The code works fine for this. However, if you can spot any potential problems with this or you know of a better way I would be interested to learn more.

I have the majority of the program planned out and have even started coding parts of it; my problem comes with the networking.This is a real-time card game (not turn-based) and I want to be able to play with real people (family mostly, so over LAN is what I'm after).
I have tried searching for code samples but I everything I have found seems more complicated than I feel is required for the task, introducing a lot of new concepts and not explaining them.
What I'm after is a simple way to exchange the information in real-time, I don't care so much for efficiency (at the moment) just ease of use - though if I need to wade through a heap of documentation I will. A perfect answer would tell me what the names of some of the controls/methods that would be appropriate are, even if it just re-affirms a bit of the complexity, you do not have to detail anything if you don't want to I just feel a bit at loss as to what exactly it is I am looking for!

I'm writing an app that sends messages over a network to another PC that processes the message and sends back a reply (e.g. a boolean or some other data). My network communication subs (based on WCF) just give me the ability to send a message to the other PC and process any received messages.The issue is that any response received is processed by my designated network message event handler sub, but I have no way of feeding it back to the sub that called for the original message to be sent.

I have an application that automatically updates addins for excel from the server to all the computers on our network. right now all i get is an error if excel is open, but what I want to be able to do is check if excel is open on each computer first and give the user a chance to save their current work then close excel. otherwise i cannot update their addins if excel is open.

If i use ip addresses, this works fine but i would rather use hostnames due to the ip addresses being dynamic (something which is outside my control). Using the hostname, it reurns "Computer is on" if the ping is successful, but if the hostname cannot be found, instead on returning "Ping request timed out", an error occurs as follows:

I have recently finished a console application and deployed it to several computers on our network for testing. As it is just an EXE a copied to the hard drives of selected computers for now. When the app is launched it writes info to an sql DB so I always know which computers it is on.
During the past few weeks I have modified this app at least 6 times (improvements, adjustments, etc)
It is a paint to keep going back to the computers to update it with the new version, and getting mixed up which version i am on - LOL I am looking for advice on how I would go about doing this automatically, for example, it would be cool if I just had to put an updated file in a repositry and clients would use this to update.
In Visual Studio, when I view the properties of my application>assembly information - I can set a file version. Is it possible to extract this info and store it in a variable? I would like to dump the in my DB. Also I could then possibly compare the file version of the launched app against an updated file in a network share folder.
