Write Files From USB Storage In .net Application?
Nov 20, 2008
I am looking for some API or OCX or any other method to copy the existing file from Hard disk to the USB storage device.for that i would have to perform the following checks :
1> Check for the plugged in USB devices.
2> Find out for the available space(2GB) on each.
3> Prompting a message to user on which drive he would like to write that movie file.(As At a time i want to give only 1 disk write only.
4> after selecting the Drive, and pressing OK, i just want to copy the selected file from HDD to that Device.
Now For achieving this , i just need a reference of any Available API or OCX or any other method available in VB.net?

I am planning to write a recipe storage program for personal use. I know what I want to do, but I am not perfectly clear on the most efficient way to do it. I am using SQL server 2005 and I am comfortable writing stored procedures. This is one of my first vb.net projects and I am still getting comfortable with ADO.net.What I want to do is create a form that can handle an list of ingredients of an unknown number.
The form will also accept a cooking procedure of an unknown number of steps. Each step will be written by the user into Rich Text boxes (vb 6 term?)I am planning to use combo boxes to select ingredients from a list or add new ingredients as needed. I also want to eliminate duplicates in the ingredients table of the sql 2005 db. I am looking for the most efficient method to save all the parts of a recipe to the database. saving a recipe will require dozens of database hits and therefore be unacceptably slow.

how to read files from an USB mass storage device. I have found plenty of posts regarding drive letter detecting and reading the files. It's OK, but what about a device, where no drive letter is assigned - e.g. my mobile phone is visible under "My Computer" as "Mobile Device". The same situation it with my MP3 player. It's visible under "My Computer" as "Sansa device". Please, could anybody help me? I need to enumerate USB devices, identify, which ones have a file system and finally, I need to read/write a file to the file system.

I'm just getting started with Visual Studio (2005), and my aim is to write a fairly simple application in Visual Basic that will need to store some data to disk. What I really want is to be able to send the application to the end users (xp, vista, win7) and have them just be able to use it without having down download all kinds of extras. For example I'm guessing that if I use an SQL database in my application they will need to download SQl server express or some other sql downloadable?
If so is there a similar downloadable for MS Access?I'm just in the 'seeing how things work' stage at the moment and I don't want to waste time going down the SQL track just to find it won't actually work unless my users all download SQL to their machines (which they won't want to do).

Looking for an idea of where the best place to keep files for a program. I use them frequently and they interact with the program directly. I want to place them in a place where they won't be easy to find if someone is just cruising thru the directories. Any ideas?

I want to develop an application which can Write, Save, Read text files(or html files) What I want the application to do is. When I open my application I can write stuffs and then it will save it to my hosting/server. Then, the application will read the text which I already save.. So far, I can only make the application read it by using WebBrowser control and navigating it to a specified URL. Example: [URL](or message.txt) Which I modified from the website not from the application. I want to modify the text or html files from my application.

reading and writing files. Let's say I have a text file with multiple lines that I want to be read into my visual basic program. The first line is displayed in textboxA while the rest of the lines are displayed in textboxB. How do I accomplish this? Am I able to use the peek method for textboxB but somehow tell it to skip the first line? Now textboxB is obviously a multiline textbox and I want the user to be able to type something into another textbox (textboxC), press a button, and it will be displayed in textboxA. How do I make the text in textboxC get displayed on the first line of textboxA and move all the other lines down the list?

in the following thread, [URL]..my first reply, writes and reads two files..
my question is, is that code used properly for writing/reading those 2 files?
for some odd reason, i feel like i am over using the writers/readers.is there a way to only use one writer/reader, not 2, as my code in that thread does, to write/read 2 or more files?

So I'm working on an app that needs to create files on the end user's computer to store info in (mainly text files and HTML files), and I'm trying to figure out the best location to write these files to. I've been reading various articles @ this online all afternoon, and the advice I've read so far seems to be "all over the place".From what I understand, if the end user is not logged into Windows as "admin", then there are a limited number of locations where files can be written to their computer, without them having to deal with UAC popups, etc.I would like my end-user's to have to jump through as few hoops as possible (none, preferably ), so should I only write my files to these specific locations? when I write the files to the end-user's computer, I have 2 different types of info that needs to be stored...
Info "A" is temporary data that only needs to be stored/accessed while the end user has my program open (and this data can be safely deleted each time they close my program).Info "B" needs to be stored somewhere where it never gets deleted, so that it can be accessed by my program for as long as the end-user has my program installed on their computer. So would it be best to store info "A" in the Temp folder, and info "B" in the App Data folder? And for any files that I store in the "temp" folder, do these files get automatically deleted when the end-user turns off their computer, or do I have to programatically delete these files every time my program exits?

Now I need to write/save these files so that I can retreive them all from the same location. I need to use Streamwriter but am not too sure how to code it.
I have included my source code so far and code for the Streamwriter write and save?

I have a user of one of my programs reporting that they get an "access to the path...is denied" error during this section of [code]He's using Windows 7 x64 with UAC turned on. The location of "FilePath" is a subdirectory inside Program Files (x86) in this case.I tried to reproduce the error on my Windows 7 x64 system by enabling UAC (I usually have it off) but the program worked fine. However, in my case, "FilePath" is not in a protected system folder like Program Files (where write permissions are not given to normal users without admin elevation). So I tried to recreate this situation on one of my Vista x86 Virtual PCs where the "FilePath" would be inside Program Files. However, my program again worked fine. It had no problems writing to the Program Files folder with a normal user account, UAC turned on and no elevated permissions required.
Thus, I am confused. Why does it work for me and not for him? I want to try an x64 virtual machine but I can't with the software I have (Virtual PC doesn't support x64 guest OSs, VirtualBox won't run the software that my program interacts with). So maybe you guys can help me instead. Are the write permissions for the Program Files (x86) folder different between x86 and x64, or maybe even Vista and 7?
