Data Storage Methods (access/sql Etc) Require The End User To Download Extra Files?

Mar 3, 2012

I'm just getting started with Visual Studio (2005), and my aim is to write a fairly simple application in Visual Basic that will need to store some data to disk. What I really want is to be able to send the application to the end users (xp, vista, win7) and have them just be able to use it without having down download all kinds of extras. For example I'm guessing that if I use an SQL database in my application they will need to download SQl server express or some other sql downloadable?

If so is there a similar downloadable for MS Access?I'm just in the 'seeing how things work' stage at the moment and I don't want to waste time going down the SQL track just to find it won't actually work unless my users all download SQL to their machines (which they won't want to do).

Getting Extra HEX Bytes When Concatenating Data Files?

Aug 8, 2009

I'm concatenating data files, but the problem is that I'm seeing some extra bytes where the files are joined. The new file has extra bytes. I had thought this was maybe a problem with encoding. Here are the methods that I've tried to use to concatenate the files. The first example I'm getting extra 0xA0 0x00 bytes.

Dim inputfiles() As String = Directory.GetFiles(sourcedir, pattern)
Dim bufSize As Integer = 1024 * 64
Dim buf As Byte() = New Byte(bufSize) {}

DB/Reporting :: Searching For More Effective Data Storage For Quick Access?

May 12, 2008

I am quite green to VB .NET and it start occuring to me that I am doing things probably in a very ineffective way.Anyway here is the problem I have datasets, consisting of integers there is set 1 which is of format ID, ID2 - ID here is unique but different ID can refer to same ID2. Before I start reading in the data I have unknown number of these entries (ID and ID2 can be at least as high as 99999999)

Then I have a second data set of format ID2 here is the same as in the set 1 and it can contain several PID entries (all integers). In this set the ID2 is unique and again for one ID2 there can be unknown amount of these PIDs, same PID can occur more than once.

Windows - Required To Download Something Extra?

Apr 4, 2012

I found a way to use VB.Net to get the default audio device in Windows 7 through downloading something extra - in this case, NAudio - but I'm now having to research whether this can be done through nothing more than run-of-the-mill Visual Studio .Net stuff, with no extra downloads, externally-done system configurations, or anything else whatsoever. Is this possible? My current research suggests that it basically isn't.

Prevent Caching Of Data - Only Allow To Download Latest Files

Jul 2, 2010

I'm using interop.msxml2.dll to open XML and txt files off an Internet server. The response that is received from the server is stored in my application's variables. I've recently noticed that the application doesn't always update the information when it goes to download a file that it has already downloaded in the past. For example, if it downloaded a file off the server when it started up, then when it attempted to download the new, changed file 5 minutes later, it would still return the same value as the first one. Even after closing the application, it would still return the incorrect, older value. How to stop this "caching" of data, and only allow the program to download the latest file off the server.

Require Each User To Have A Unique Id - Adding New Users ?

Aug 15, 2011

For my user system, I require each user to have a unique id. The reading in and saving of the user data is all done, but now I'm focusing on adding new users. In my add user dialog, I have the information fields required to create a new user, one of which is the ID (which must be unique). For this I have created a function that I thought would always give a unique id but it does not. paste the code below:

Function getnextuserid()
Dim id As String
Dim unique As Boolean

Does Software Require An Access Database

Dec 19, 2009

If I wrote some software that used an access database to store data. If I then gave the code to a third party, who ran this sofware on his Pc. Would the code work , if his Pc did not have the access database installed.I read in some article that this would still work? If this is true, how could this work? If the above software had an form which required the client to input details of an order. When the order details were being processed by the code where would it store them if no access database was installed on that pc.

My application (vb.net) sometimes throws an "access denied" exception when attempting to delete files in the AppData folder and I'm not sure why.I confirm that the file exists before attempting to delete it and have not done anything to make it readonly, etcThe interesting thing is that it seems to go okay when I'm logged in with Admin rights

User Data - SQLCE Files - One Database With Multiple User On PC

Mar 3, 2010

I'm designing a PC-based app that has a little local database. I'm using VB.NET with SQL Server Compact Edition. The user will only ever have access to one database file, because it's all about storing a user specific data. However I'm thinking of the situation where there could be multiple users that access the PC, each with their own Windows account. So ideally I'd need separate database files for each User.

I'm not sure how to implement this. I was hoping to deploy the 'empty' database as a ClickOnce deployment, but I can't see how I can have a database per user doing this. Also I'm not sure where to store the database files anyway. perhaps in MyDocuments for each user? Or perhaps I need to stick to just one database, but add a 'User' column into every table, so it can hold data for every user. I didn't want to do this though - because I wanted to keep the nice separation between the data offered by physically separate files.

Is There Version Of .NET Framework 3.5 That Does Not Require Downloading during User's Setup Procedure?

Mar 30, 2010

I made a little program for Hobby-use, and I like it to be installed by an installer. There's an installer program (Windows Installer 3.1?) deliverd with Visual Studio 2008 but that does not do the job completely. I want a coupling to be made between a program and a the users startup directory. If Windows Installer 3.1 can do that after all, can somebody explain how? If not, is there a free or low cost, simple to use (no scripting) installer program what will do the job? At last: Is there a version of .NET Framework 3.5 that does not require downloading during the user's setup procedure?

how to read files from an USB mass storage device. I have found plenty of posts regarding drive letter detecting and reading the files. It's OK, but what about a device, where no drive letter is assigned - e.g. my mobile phone is visible under "My Computer" as "Mobile Device". The same situation it with my MP3 player. It's visible under "My Computer" as "Sansa device". Please, could anybody help me? I need to enumerate USB devices, identify, which ones have a file system and finally, I need to read/write a file to the file system.

Sql - Unit Testing The Data Access Layer - Testing Update Methods?

VS 2010 Deploying With Extra Files?

Deleting the autorun file, inserting the Templates folder myself, and then using a self extracting ZIP to make it easy for the user to install. While this works, i would like to make it easier on myself by just including the Templates folder and the two template files (both .xls files) in the program every time i deploy.I've tried dragging and dropping the folder + files into my solution explorer bin folder but it doesn't work.I'm using Visual Basic 2010 Express.

Access GMAIL For Storage In Custom CRM Using SQL Server DB?

Mar 12, 2010

I have a client who wants his custom-written CRM to be able to access his sales people's emails so that, effectively, a history of email conversations between customer and salesperson is stored inside the CRM's database.

The CRM is written in VB 2008 and the database is SQL Server 2008. The only email these people use, in the shop and on the road, is GMAIL. Each sales person has their own GMAIL address. Thats how they operate.

If they're on the road and respond to a customer's email inquiry about a product, they would like that email conversation to be stored in a table in the database. I think thats the part I cant wrap my head around. How to get access to the email data (knowing the user id and password) and doing so from VB 2008

Update: A free or close to free solution would be preferred.

VS 2008 2 Extra Files In Addidtion To Setup.exe

Jul 17, 2010

I created a simple BMI calculator through the guide.I have built it and published it on my laptop running Vista Home Premium with .net 3.5 SP1 installed.I can run the setup and subsequent exe file fine on my machine but when I try it on my girlfriends netbook (one of those fiddly little things) it wont install saying that some of the files are missing. It is running XP and also has .net 3.5 SP1 on it.There are only 2 extra files in addidtion to the setup.exe that vb 2008 creates and they are the application manifest and the program icon, both of which are located with the setup.exe but it still won't install. It is an offline installation but won't run.I copied the bin folder from the project to the setup folder and tried that, still no joy, yet if I try and run the actual program directly it works?
