XML Serialization To Save TableLayoutPanel's Contents?
Oct 5, 2010
I have used the XML serialization to save a single text and a picture in a XML file. However, I am confused on how to extend the concept further.I have a second Windows Form which has a TableLayoutPanel in which each cell has a Picture Box and a TextBox. The user has the option to set the number of rows and columns himself, so I do not know about the number of pictures that have to be saved in the XML file. Further, when the user pressed the load button, the same pictures have to come back to their original pictures boxes in the TableLayout.
How can I save the contents of the TableLayout in the XML file and retrieve them in their corresponding cells?

I am trying to check if a cell in a tablelayoutpanel contains anything and if it does; clear it.I tried tablelayoutpanel.removeat(1) but I need to check if there is actually anything in there, or else it throws an error.

I have just learned about serialization, and looks very appealing as a way to save application data without much maintenance overhead. But I have one issue that I would like answered before I start coding. If a user saves a project via serialization, and then the program gets an update, say one that might have added or removed a property for an object. If the user then tries to load his previous project with the updated program, since the object now has a modified structure won't it fail to load from the previously serialized data?Would there be any way to recover/convert that saved data to the current object structure?

I've been using XML serialization for a while, and today I realized something really odd. If I have a new line right after a "dot" (.), when i deserialize, I lose the dot. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? The following is my serialization code:

I have a "For
Each
Row As
System.Data.DataRow
In
DataTable.Rows" type loop. I want to save the contents of a field to use in subsequent processing.
It looks to me like the proper way would be to use something like the following:
Dim saveCatalogWorkID As VariantType
For Each clsWTRow As System.Data.DataRow In clsWTDataTable.Rows
saveCatalogWorkID = clsWTRow.Field("CatalogWorkID")
Next clsWTRow

Ive built a very small application for personal use only. Ive been working on it for around 2-3 weeks & have just finally completed it this morning.
Basically what I want to do is add a button to my form which will allow me to take the contents of the listbox and print it out or atleast be able to save it to a word document or something of that kind, I'm not entirely sure how I would go about doing this. Bare in mind, Ive only just stepped into VB around a month ago.. self learning myself via internet & several books I have at hand.

I've created a windows form in VB Express 2005 with lots of combo boxes and print and save buttons.I would like to be able to save the contents of the populated combo boxes, labels etc ie the whole form from the save button, preferably to excel 2003. However, would be just as happy to save it in the form format. The only code behind the save button I have so far is this, which just navigates me to the directory. When I enter a filename and extension, the directory is empty:
Private Sub save_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, _
ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Save.Click
' Displays a SaveFileDialog so the user can save the file assigned to the Save button.

I have an application that pings IP addresses. When complete it will probably have close to 1000 IP addresses it will ping. I have a settings page that has a textbox that stores the IP address (one IP address eg. 192.158.1.1 per text box) for the object to ping. I want to be able to save all of the textbox IP address into a text file, and then be able to load the IP addresses from the text file into the respective text boxes.

I am using the DataGridView in Visual Basic 2008 Express with an Access 2000 database.
What I'm trying to do is allow the user to click on the Row Header and capture the contents of the 4 cells in the row to 4 dfined variables. I know that I can capture each cell individually by using the CellContentClick event but this would require the user to click 4 times rather then just once.

I am a Real Estate appraiser and have some limited experience with vb and .net. I have a task which I perform which requires me to go to the conuty appraisers web site and print a copy (to image bmp or jpg or directly to the default printer) of the current public record info for anywhere from a few pages to 1,000 plus records at a time.
I don't really get paid to do this part of the job so they don't care whether it takes me a few minutes or several hours to do this. I thought there must be a way to automate this process, so last week I started searching and test code snippets. What I have to date opens an instance of IE; navigates to the reguested page; finds the form elemet for AcctNo; fills it in and submits the form. The page that comes back is formatted for screen presentation and is not suitable to be sent to the printer. There is however a link which when clicked returns a page formatted for pinting. Downside is it also brings up the print dialog which then has to be handled. I was able through several methods to click either the print button or the cancel button which leaves me with a document that is either sent to printer or sitting on screen.
The questions are: Is there a way to do this without displaying the Print Dialog? Maybe a HTTPRequest or HTTPWebREquest as I have no need to see the screens just need the final page. The resultant page is typically longer then letter by a few lines and wants to print on two pages. It would be nice to resize the page to fit and typically it will be the same resizing. If I stick with the print dialog either clicking print or cancel how can I intercept the document and decide by options set in the program wheter to send the file to the printer or save to image?

What kind of file format can I use to save the DataGridView's contens? Can it be the .xls format? This means I want to open the contents in Excel later. But I don't want to launch the Excel itself when I save the contents? Because Excel may not exist n the clients' machines. This means I just want to "save" not "export".

I created an application in which the user has to specify the number of rows and collumns. Once these are specified, a Table Layout Panel creates these number of cells with each cell having a button and a Text Box inside it. On the double click of a button, the user can change the background image of the button, specify the sound for it and similarly fill in the text box too. The sound specified should be played on single button click. Once done for all the cells, it would look something like this.[code]...

name: "Tim"
address: "123 Fake Street"
phone: ""
And then saves. When the come back and load this i want to be able to load it back exactly like that so the can continue with what they are doing. And if there are to open a different person they can continue with that one where they stopped. I want to be able to save them all at once and load them at once.

I have seen a different behavior before, but this time my application just doesn't work properly when debugging, while it does everything perfectly after compilation.
My project is beginning and does just one thing: monitor the clipboard and save its contents to a XML. It has just one form (frmMain), which, when loaded, puts itself in Windows clipboard listening, via WIN32 API. Then, whenever receives a message, the form has to check if it's from clipboard and, if so, saves the actual contents.
The code is below:
Public Class frmMain
Private Const WM_CLIPBOARDUPDATE As Integer = &H31D
Private XmlDocument As System.Xml.XmlDocument
[CODE]...
So, as I've said, after compiling, everything works perfectly. However, when debugging the "AddItems" function is never called. I set a stop point in the line Win32 API is called (in frmMain_Load) and the execution NEVER STOPS THERE! Debugging line by line, I found out that after executing some lines from frmMain_Load, VStudio just jumps to WndProc and never comes back to frmMain. I mean, the form is shown, and the rest of its initialization code is never executed. Because of that, my form is never added to clipboard listening (this command is at the end of frmMain_Load) and, consequently, all messages my window receives are not from clipboard, and, therefore, nothing is saved.
Is it normal to VStudio just bypass some code because a event triggered other method? This could lead to lots of complications and it's not consistent with after compiling behavior. A proof that what I said is actually happening is this: I passed the last 5 lines from frmMain_Load (where the Win32API is called) to the beginning, so my program would call the API before initializing the XML file. OK, now what I have: the API is called, but the XML commands are never executed. Consequently, "AddNewEntry" is called, but I have a null-reference error, because my XML was never initialized. Have you ever faced that bizarre behavior? What can I do so my debugging is correct and I don't have to compile my program for each test I want to do?

I have two experimental web services. One is an asmx contained within a .net web application. The other is a WCF service library being invoked from the web application. The asmx basically does everything I need, but I think WCF would be better, except that it doesn't do anything as I would expect after fiddling with the asmx service. For example, the same method behaves differently in each:
' ASMX
<WebMethod(BufferResponse:=True, EnableSession:=False)>
Function Test(aObject as Object) as Object
' object will have been successfully serializaed into a dictionary
