Accessing Myclass From A Noninstance Method?
Nov 3, 2009
i have a code like this
'bug_message is a public shared property
Public Shared Sub bug(ByVal bug_message As String)
msgbox(XX_format(MyClass.bug_message, bug_message))
End Sub
however i get this error: MyClass is valid only within an instance method. I do not wish to use the actual name of my class, and if i could i would prefer to keep the name of the argument as bug_message as well.

I have a list of properties and values that i'd like to use to dynamically build an Expression(Of Func(Of MyClass,MyClass))
I can run through the list and create each Expression by itself, but the only way I know how to combine them would be to use Expression. And or Expression.AndAlso, but that returns a BinaryExpression rather than my original Expression(Of Func(Of MyClass,MyClass)).

In C# .NET 3.5, is there a way to instantiate an object given its string name? For example, suppose I have a DLL (e.g., MyClass.DLL) which contains type MyClass. Is possible to write something like... Object myClass = SomeMethodToInstantiate("MyClass"); // ? Is it possible to do this in VB .NET 3.5?

I've got an .aspx page with this in it:
<%@ Import Namespace="System.Web.Mvc" %>
<%= AssetController.ScriptTag("/js/Community/CommunityWizard.js")%>
And I have an AssetController class:
Imports System.Web.Mvc
Public Class AssetController
Inherits Controller
[Code]...
What gives? I don't understand why I can use this controller everywhere in our ASP.NET Forms/MVC hybrid application, but not in a view.
EDIT: In fact, when I type <% System.Web. into the .aspx view, Mvc doesn't even appear in Intellisense!

The MyClass keyword behaves like an object variable referring to the current instance of a class as originally implemented. MyClass is similar to Me, but all method calls on it are treated as if the method were NotOverridable. I can see how that could kind of be useful, in some specific scenarios. What I can't think of is, how would you obtain the same behavior in C# - that is, to ensure that a call to a virtual method myMethod is actually invoked against myMethod in the current class, and not a derived myMethod (a.k.a in the IL, invoking call rather than callvirt)?

I'm getting a: mypage.aspx.vb(390,0): error BC30002:Type 'MyNamespace.MyClass' is not defined when I try to compile, run, etc. my website. What's really odd is that I don't have anything in my Error List before or after I do this. I wouldn't have an idea of what was wrong, except I have my compile verbosity turned way up. The line it's failing on looks like:

Traditionally, class/type name is literally spelled inside its definition.
Public Class MyCustomClass
Public child As MyCustomClass
Public Shared Function Clone(ByVal original As MyCustomClass) As MyCustomClass
End Class
This is not a problem most of the time; C-languages even use class name as constructor methods' name. But consider a generic declaration:
Public Class MyListOfIntegers
Inherits MyCustomList(Of Integer)
End Class
[code]....
This scenario has 2 issues. The first one is that constructors are not inherited, and you have to provide pass-through wrappers in every derived class, — this is quiet dumb, but tolerable. The second issue is more severe: derived class inherits CloneMe() method which returns MyCustomList(Of Integer) , not MyListOfIntegers ! Every returned value must be manually DirectCast 'ed for further use with methods that expect MyListOfIntegers . This issue, together with the first one, renders inheritance of generic class almost useless.
So I need a "MyClass" alternative for static type-binding inside type definition. In case of generic type that is referencing other compound types, task could be accomplished by adding second parameter to type section:
Public Class MyCustomList(Of T, TList)
...
Public Function CloneMe() As TList
[code]....
But since we must reference our own type, it would create an infinite recursive loop of additional typeparamlist arguments. How can this be resolved, aside of creating separate classes without generics?

I can't seem to find the correct words to search for an answer. I'm using VS 2010 so I have auto-implemented properties.I have a class and I want to access the properties by a string.
Public Class MyClass
Property Prop1 As String
Property Prop2 As String[code].....
But, I also want to be able to access the variables something like this way....
Dim MyVar = New MyClass
MyVar.Items("Prop1") = "Prop1 Value"
MyVar.Items("Prop2") = "Prop2 Vaule"
How can I setup MyClass to work both ways?

I have a large problem with inheritance in vb.net. The problem is the following:
I have 2 forms => frmBase and frmChild
In frmBase i want to create a method Called StartWorking() and i want frmChild to inherit this method.
But here is the tricky thing: when frmChild.StartWorking is called i would like the following => without calling MyBase.StartWorking()
I want frmBase.StartWorking() to be executed first and after a test in frmBase.StartWorking if blnValue is true then frmChild.StartWorking has to be activated. if blnValue is false that frmChild.StartWorking cannot be activated.

I have nine pictures that I need to animate -I need to use the ToString method and a counter to concatenate a file name into a string variable from the Image.FromFile method. Once the counter reaches its maximum value, and the last picture is displayed, the counter should be reset to zero or one depending on how the first image file has been name. Also a static counter variable should be incremented in the time routine. what I have so far -- I know what I have to do; however, I just do not know how to code this properly.. Right now I have this going thru a button procedure but it needs to go through a timer.

When I am loading an Assembly dynamically, then calling a method from it, I appear to be getting the method from Assembly executing before the code in the method that is calling it.It does not appear to be executing in a Serial manner as I would expect. Can anyone shine some light on why this might be happening. Below is some code to illustrate what I am seeing, the code from the some.dll assembly calls a method named PerformLookup. For testing I put a similar MessageBox type output with "PerformLookup Time: " as the text. What I end up seeing is:
First: "PerformLookup Time: 40:842"
Second: "initIndex Time: 45:873"
Imports System

Basically in visual basic 6 I could access word tables in existing templates with the code owordactivedoc.tables(1).select() where owordactivedoc refers to the active word document and tables(1) refers to the first table in the template.Trying the same code in VB 2003 just leads to errors. Secondly how do I access bookmarks or alternatively word variables.Furthermore how do one deploy web.services. For example the current program I am building is for another computer. Simply copying the web service to Inetpubwwwroot dont work because it is not picked up by the Internet Information Services program. I have to create the web service in vb2003 on the other computer change msconfig manually. Copy and paste the existing service vb file in the created folder replacing the empty vb file.

Why does my the declaration of my string in the code result in the following error? Is there a workaround?
Code:
<script runat="server">
Protected Sub form1_Load(sender As Object, e As System.EventArgs)
Dim x As String = "</script>"
[code]....
Error: Statement cannot appear within a method body. End of method assumed.
Note: The following page did not fix my issue and instead resulted in the string </script> being output in my page. ( VB.NET hates </script> tag in string literal )

Extension methods are useful for types that you don't own and can't/don't want to derive from and extend (e.g. reference types and interfaces). Obviously, interfaces should be kept as short and to-the-point as possible, so extension methods for interfaces are particularly useful (e.g. LINQ).For classes, especially classes that you own, they're still useful - but I'm wondering how you determine what should be an extension method or what should be a method in the class itself.Personally, every time I think about it, I keep going round in circles with the following thoughts:If it's useful enough, it should be in the class. It's not part of the core responsibility of the class, it should be an extension method - but if it's useful enough, surely it should be the responsibility of the class...
