I need to add a loop to allow repeated checking of ISBN numbers, which should check to determine when processing should be ended and should allow exiting the program without having to enter an ISBN before quitting. I also need to use a Select Case for the three ISBN possibilities (ISBN-10, ISBN-13, invalid ISBN length).

I am using a select case loop to perform different tasks, one of the tasks the loop is doing is putting 1d arrays together into 3d arrays. But, when i come to print the 3d array only the 3rd "line" in the array is complete. Is there a way to pass variables created in a select case out of the select case?

When my form loads it adds some handles (using AddHandler) to a sub (showStatus). What this sub does is checks which control activated the sub (using sender.Equals) and displays text in the status label (status) accordingly.For this I use an If...Then statement for each possibility. There are many possibilities and my code get cluttered. Is there a way to do the same thing with a Select...Case statement. So how would I use .next (random numbers) to randomly select something from a list of numbers but it can't repeat the number?I could do:

I have just about completed a .NET project to write a program to randomly select numbers for a Bingo caller. Over the last month or so Ive learned a lot about .NET but heres something that I consider to be odd and maybe one of you guys can offer an opinion.
One of the features of calling Bingo in a small local club is that callers often use little sayings to accompany certain numbers, I expect youve all heard of (say) All the sixes, clickety click for 66 or 5 and 9 the Brighton line for 59 etc. My little program gives an option to incorporate these with a prompt for the caller that can be edited outside of the program. One of these conventional sayings is used when a number is reversed 12 followed by 21 or 45 followed by 54 for example, when the caller might call (say) 1 and 2, one dozen, number 12 And the other way round 2 and 1, twenty one.
So, I programmed in a bit of code to detect this and to over-ride whatever might otherwise have been the quote with And the other way round and set about testing it. Ive been through literally dozens of full 90 calls watching for the occurrence of a reversed number, spent a few hours doing it, and not once has it occurred which is to say the least, unusual.
So, Im wondering about the Rand Function, could it be that it isnt possible for a reversed number to be selected? Just so you know, I randomly pre-select the order of all 90 numbers, I fill each of the 90 elements of an array with a random number first checking that the number selected hasnt already been stored, if it has, I just get the next random number (and check that too of course), but I cant see how that could prevent reversed numbers being selected, especially in light of the fact that frequently it's not the 'next' number that's used.
what the following code is ment to do is generate a bunch of numbers between 1 and 49 using the while loop to check if two of these numbers are the same. Problem is two numbers are still being generated the same and I know that the numbers generated again will not match them originals so it stops the loop.

View 7 RepliesI'm working on a routine that requires a significant amount of nested and daisy-chained logic. Using If-Then-Else, each logic construct would run 8-15 lines of code (quite readable) while using Select Case each construct doubles that (even with significant commentation, it gets less and less readable with each new Case).
I've read many times in this forum how Select Case is leaps and bounds ahead of If-Then-Else in runtime performance, although I can't recall any discussion of the underlying process(es) that make it so. I've also not had any luck finding good, detailed documentation on the nuts and bolts under each logic construct. What I'm working on, if the performance leap is legit, needs the performance more than the readability but if the performance is marginal then the readability is going to get the priority. how and why Select Case is supposed to process so much faster than If-Then-Else. Links to good white paper would be really nice too.

How do I check wheter nmbToCheck is between nmb1 and nmb2? I know I could use < and >, but the problem is that I won't be knowing which of the numbers will be smaller, and which will be larger, and it seems like a lot of code to write for such a small issue. There must be some sort of nmbToCheck.IsBetween(nmb1, nmb2) type solution to this, right?
I thought that this would be an easy way of checking if the txtBox only contains numbers. I was wrong.

I am using visual basic in VS 2008 and trying to learn how to assign a value to a word in a combo box using case select, this is my first attempt at programing and i just can't work out what to do next. So far i have two combo boxes a label and a button, i want the word, first to = 11, second = 9, third =7, fourth = 5. All it is doing at the moment is adding the list index value and displaying that total in the label. I want it to display for eg: if (first=11) and (second=9) are selected a total of 20 in the label,and so on for what ever combination is selected.

I have assigned nodes in my treeview keys depending on what they are to do with and now i would like to use a select case to choose the right calculation depending on which node is selected.i have tried selecting the key like this:

I just replaced a different segment of code with the select case statement and it works fine. However I don't understand what the dim is for after you do "Select case [variable name here]"
I currently just dimmed a value as nothing. I didn't specify any data type for my variable I'm using for this case statement. But it works.[code]...
