Application Restart Necessary Immediately After A Clickonce Update?

Jul 25, 2011

I've deployed an application inside a corporate network and I want the update process to require less attention from users. Giving them a choice to update is not a porogative.I've written code to detect when new updates are available automatically rather than letting ClickOnce check on application start. I'm wondering if its necessary to restart the app after the update has completed. Currently I invoke at the end of my update script:Application.Restart()

But what if (to make the update process more transparent for the user), I performed a 'silent' update in the background on a separate thread, and then displayed an icon prompting the user to restart the app to apply the changes? Would it work this way?

Furthermore, if I ran my custom InstallUpdate() process on a timer, say every 2 hours, would ClickOnce be happy to continue to update for every new version that was released even thought the user has not restarted (and I'm expecting the updates only to apply once the user restarts the app)?

VS 2010 Application.restart() After Downloading A New Update

Sep 9, 2010

I was trying to use application.restart() to restart my application after downloading a new update. It seems to run into the problem where it is trying to start the new application before the original is closed so it errors out and never starts. After reading through some threads here I determined the better way to handle it would be

application.exit() process.start(application.executablepath) This didn't work and gave me what seems to be the same problem. I would also like to note this works fine when running the application through visual studios, it is only when I try to run this independent of VS2010 that the application never restarts.

VSTO ClickOnce Application Trying To Update Via Visual Studio Local File?

Jan 15, 2012

I've built a VSTO add-in for Microsoft Word and deployed to a webserver. Installation goes off without a hitch. When I create an updated version of the application and redeploy it to the webserver, the add-in correctly detects that there's a new version and attempts to update it. This is where I'm running into the following error (the "xxx" indicates that I had to censor something):url...The customization cannot be installed because another version is currently installed and cannot be upgraded from this location. To install this version of the customization, first use Add or Remove Programs to uninstall this program: xxx. Then install the new customization from the following location: url...This appears to me as if I left a local reference of some sort in my Project, but I can't find anything of the sort. The only reference to this file is within the xxx.vbproj.FileListAbsolute.txt file that's generated in the bin/Debug folder. Not sure if this is also a clue, but I'm seeing Registry Keys added referencing this as the location of the VSTO Project Manifest.

IDE :: Multiple Environments - Enabled The Installation By Clickonce - Update Occurs Before The Application Starts

Oct 29, 2009

I am developing an application in Vb.Net 2005 and have enabled the installation by clickonce, the update occurs before the application starts. My problem is very simple, the server that contains updates is correctly natted to be available from the outside with a public IP.

The clients who access from an external network connecting without problems, download software and updates. When local clients are connected to the same network of the server (LAN) can not download anything because they try to access the server with the ip public, and the nat does not work . We can not perform operations on the DNS server or hosts file and not even on the router.

I need to figure out if i can use ClickOnce to use more than one distribution server, primary and secondary. I'd like to set as the primary server the public address and the secondary server with internal network ip address.

Update A DataRow Immediately After Inserting It ?

Sep 20, 2011

I have an OleDBDataAdapter which I am using to communicating with an Access database. I have generated a SELECT command with parameters, and used this to generate a DataSet.I have then used the OleDbCommandBuilder to generate the UPDATE and INSERT commands. I can use this successfully to fetch data and then update it.

Next I have created a I have a DataRow using DataSet.Tables.NewRow which I have populated.I have then used my DataAdapter to insert this record. This works just find. I would like to now update this DataRow.Can I refresh this DataRow so that it populates the fields such as the autonumber field and the automatically populated timestamp? I could select it again but I don't know the autonumber. Is there not some way that I can get the existing DataRow to synchronise with the new row?

ClickOnce Manual Update Not Working?

Mar 13, 2009

I have my application set up with ClickOnce. It has been successfully published to my web site. I don't have updates performed automatically but on demand. I have a button that the user can click if they want to check if an update is available and install the update if it is. Here's the

[Code]...

After clicking the button a message box appears and says, "Update is available for download" as you would expect but after clicking the ok on the message box my application goes into a not responding state and I have to close it with the task manager. The application builds successfully and I have a reference for System.Deployment added to the project. Everything in my application works fine as long as I don't try to do an update. Any suggestions on what I should check or do? It should actually say "no updates are available for download" since the version of the program that is being used is the most current version.

I have no clue of how to accomplish this one, I mean checking if this application closes by something external to my c# app.

Deployment :: ClickOnce App Not Update If Passed Command Line Arguments

Jul 9, 2009

I have a ClickOnce application deployed to many workstations in my office. On it's first run it adds a registry key to the HKCU run group that adds itself with a "-minimize" argument. On each login the program starts and seeing the command line argument minimizes itself. However when a update is published the program does not update. If the program is run from its menu shortcut without arguments it runs fine. I then looked up how to update programmaticaly and put that code into my program to run at startup.

But my.application.isnetworkdeployed returns False when command line arguments are passed to the app and TRUE when run without command line arguments even though in both cases it is network deployed. Since my program starts up with command line arguments and stays minimized while the computer is on there is no reason for a user to close the program and reopen it through a menu item but as of right now that's the only way the program updates. Is this a bug or how ClickOnce is supposed to work?

Example: Create a new program. On the form add a textbox. In the Form load event put something like:
Private Sub Form1_Load(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Me.Load
TextBox1.Text = My.Application.Info.DirectoryPath.ToString & "" & My.Application.Info.AssemblyName & ".exe"
MsgBox("Is my app network deployed?: " & My.Application.IsNetworkDeployed)
End Sub

Deploy the app. Start it with a menu item and it returns True. Start it with any command like argument (use the path from the box) and it returns false. Why? How is that possible? The app didn't magically become non network deployed because it was passed a command line argument.

Using New My.settings After Application Restart

Apr 13, 2010

I'm using my.settings to store different communication parameters. After changing parameters, for several reasons, it's easier to restart the application then to re-initialize all objects/variables/etc using program code.

When I change my.settings and use save to save them. When I quit the application and manually start it again, the newly saved settings are used.

When I use either .restart, or application.exit in combination with process.start. The application will use the old values for my.settings.

If I read up on .restart there's a remark mentioning that it will restart the application using the initially used settings.

Before restarting the application, I manually checked if the new settings were really save to the user.config file, and they were.

My question: Is there a way to restart the application using either .restart, or application.exit in combination with process.start which will use the newly saved my.settings values?

Application.Restart With Different Command Line Arguments?

Jan 27, 2010

Is it possible to restart a VB.NET application, but with different command line arguments than it originally had? Here is the challenge. I want to write a single instance application. If the second instance has the same CL args as the first, then the built-in behavior is fine (second instance never opens, e.BringToForeground=True brings 1st instance to foreground, everything is great). But if the second instance has different CL args, then I would like the first instance to close and the second instance to start. However, once you mark a VB.NET app as "single instance only", it appears that you can never get the second instance. I think: OK, fine, I can just restart my first instance from the StartupNextInstance event. But how do I use the new command line arguments from the second instance? The Restart() method does not take CL args that I can see.

However, the application itself needs to save files to a folder on the server that is hidden and only allows read/write access to administrators. I need for these users to be able to interact with this folder using the application without giving them the ability to browse to the folder on their own. I've tried using several impersonation techniques, none have worked.

IDE :: Debugging - Declarations Fails To Initialize After Application.Restart

Apr 14, 2009

In my code the application will restart using the Application.Restart statement from another form named frmDatabase.

The application seems to restart while debugging but yet the dataset, tables etc which is declared right below the class declaration for the startup form seems to fail initializing when the restart is done.

Compiling and running the application works like a charm and there is no error like this when running the executeable.

I also Inserted a breakpoint in the Form_Load event and the debugger seems to skip all the statements when the application is restarted all the way down to where the exception occurs.

Declarations:

Public Class frmMain
Public objConnection As New OleDbConnection(strConnectionString)
Public objDataSet As New DataSet
Public objCommand As New OleDbCommand
Public objDataAdapter As New OleDbDataAdapter(objCommand)

.net - Debugging ClickOnce Deployed Application

Nov 9, 2010

I am new to ClickOnce deployment and at first glance it seems a great way to maintain .Net applications updated with ease. I am developing a simple application that stores information on a mdb database and over some XML files. I understood how to use the "data" folder with ClickOnce and I am developing the part of my application that should migrate the data from older versions after a ClickOnce update. Now I need to debug that part of my code that only runs when the application is in "networkDeployed" mode. So actually I'm doing the following really slow process to test a new deployed version:

publishing the application on a provisional website (I can choose between a faster locale iis site or a real online one) installing the application from the deploying website (the first time) or running the old installed application so it automatically catch new updates and gets updated... running the application

So basically I have two problems here:

the whole process is much too slow :/ I'm running the app as every other app directly from the OS, so I can't access to the debugger...

I am pretty sure that there are better way to test ClickOnce deployed applications...

Forms :: Disabling A Splash Screen When Application.Restart Is Called?

Dec 28, 2011

I have an application with a splash screen which gets shown before the application starts. One of the requirements of the application is to allow users to restart (or atleast clear the form) so that other test cases can be ran. Because there are so many forms and variables, we elected to simply call Application.Restart() to accomplish this.

What we would like to do now is disable the Splash Screen when Application.Restart() is called. That is, only show the Splash Screen when the application is initially started, not when it is restarted.

Php - Automatically Restarting A Chat Server Application On System Restart?

Jul 22, 2009

I developed a chat application with an attendant chat server. Everything is working fine. The issue now is the fact that whenever the chat server goes down (for instance, the server system shuts down as a result of power failure or some other problem), by the time the server system come back on, the chat server would have to be restarted manually.

I believe (and I know) it is more appropriate for the chat server application to restart itself when the computer comes back on (and of course regardless of who is logged in and of course, even before anyone logs in). I have a batch file that executes the chat server. My attempt was to create a windows service that start automatically and runs this batch file using a Network Service account on the server system. Although, I'm having a hard time with this (temporarily), I would love to ask if there are any alternatives to using a windows service.
