Apply Patches For Updating .NET Application Over The Internet?
Jan 26, 2012
First of all, I hope my intention is not missconcept.I would like to add an update from the internet mechanism for my newly VB.NET application. The idea is simple. That is, I ZIP all of the binary that need to be changed, upload it in my own hosting site, and download it using my Update Application, extract and overwrite the existing binary.
It works, quite well. But the problem is, the size of the binary itself is quite big (around 36MB). I am thinking of patches. That is, can we upload only the patch file, it surely make the download small isn't?

I have created an updater for my application. When the application starts the user can launch an updater that will check for the latest version. Download it and copy the files to where the installation is.
Everything works fine.
However, I am looking for a more robust technique. And I have discovered it is better to hash the files on the web server with a hash algorithm and then when they have downloaded use the same hash algorithm to compare the hash values. If they are different either the files were corrupted when downloaded or some modified them without permission.
However, my problem is where do I store the hash values? I was thinking of hashing the files, and storing all the hash values for each file in a text file, and my updater will download that text file.
I am not sure if that is the best technique to use of not? Is this the normal and best way to do this?

I am developing an application toolbar to be used with our companys CAD software and I have this portion of it Reading the lines of a text file into various comboboxes and such. However, if there are only 12 lines in the text file when I click a button to update and apply the new information i get an error because the file is already open. I need to figure out how to make sure its closed before WriteAllLines kicks in.

I want to create a patch system which patches the entire executable. So like: You download my patch and it changes the code of the existing executable instead of replacing it. the reason why: I got an application which is already around the ~15MB and it will grow bigger (Like 200~300MB) so, I want to keep it compact.I've already read that patching an executable for only a string is quite easy, but, I got my doubts about actual code and resources.

Is there a way to apply any changes made to an entire application and not just the open (active) form that you are in? I.E. I change the backcolor to a color from a color dialog. I want that chosen color to be applied to all the forms' backcolor in my project. Can this also then be applied to all the other controls' backcolor? The code that I posted works but all forms and controls have to have the changes applied to each one separately.

I was using VB 2008 to code using applications. An example of something I coded was hangman. I was wondering if its possible to somehow use the application code and apply it to a form.So for example with the code below how would one go about putting into a form? If this isn't possible, what are the main difference between form/application coding? How would I go about coding hangman for example on a form, what are the main difference between the two??

I need my application to check for internet connectivity on my user's computer. If there is, an image is displayed and if there isn't, a different image is displayed. Here's the code I used to get this to work:
Private Sub Window_Loaded(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles MyBase.Loaded
If NetworkInformation.NetworkInterface.GetIsNetworkAvailable Then
Dim bi1 As New BitmapImage
[code]....
I decided to test this on my own computer by changing my default gateway (thereby making it seem as if I lost connection). But I realized that the code still showed that I was connected. So I'm thinking that it's only checking for connectivity of the interface - which in this case, is my connection to the router (which is true, I was connected to the router). How do I check that the user's PC is actually connected to the internet? I read the article Check for Internet connectivity but it's in C# and I don't understand that.

how to properly publish my application to the Internet, so that i can upload the new version, and upon opening, the application will replace the existing one with the new version?
My.Settings("Notepad") = TextBox2.Text
My.Settings("Notepad") = TextBox2.Text
When i run the application, that pops up in yellow with an error message, how do i fix it. I'm looking at creating an IRC client that's embedded in my application. If you are able to create it even, you will be given credits, and are able to do whatever you like with it (I'll be determining its size and positioning inside my App of course) You need to be able to CHOOSE your Channel.. the client will be connecting to the Swiftkit IRC server.

i m currently working on application that has to monitor temperature and humidity of a particular place and constantly report the same to the user over internet. So far, I m using LPC1768 and its ethernet module collect the data, process it and send it to the router. On the other side, i have a computer which is connected to the same router and running a VB application where the data is mined and reported in a excel.
This setup works just fine. Now, i want to monitor the same data over internet. How can i do the same?
Here i was able to connect to the micro-controller using the IP 192.168.1.100 port 80. I m aware that the IP is a local one and to access the micro controller from Internet there is another way.I have a IP based webcam which enables us to monitor from internet. How should i make micro-controller data be accessible from internet.(similar to IP Camera).

I am connecting to a SQL database on a hosted server and everything is ok but if I publish the application then it fails to connect which is a bummer because then I can't debug it!
I have tried turning off windows firewall and that doesn't make any difference.

I am trying to write an application that monitors internet usage. So it sort of needs to act like a firewall/proxy, recording each site the computer goes to. It will record all these sites in a log file. Using a proxy server on the network is not an option, each computer running this software needs to be self sufficient. Do you have any suggestions on what to use for this project?

What is the difference between launching Internet Explorer and going to a web site with Flash and it runnig OK vs. launching a URL from a VB .NET WinForm application (using either Shell or Process.Start) and getting prompted to accept the use of the Flash Control? I don't understand why it is prompting for that and how do I get rid of it (by using the same Flash control already installed like going to a URL directly from Internet Explorer).
