VS 2010 - Updating Text File And Apply New Info
Feb 16, 2012
I am developing an application toolbar to be used with our companys CAD software and I have this portion of it Reading the lines of a text file into various comboboxes and such. However, if there are only 12 lines in the text file when I click a button to update and apply the new information i get an error because the file is already open. I need to figure out how to make sure its closed before WriteAllLines kicks in.

I just made a project which a registration it has Tables/Database. [MemID] [Name] [Address] etc... I try to test this program i publish this to make a installer, after the installation, i run the program i put some information:
Example:
MemID : 1
Name : Julio Jose
Address : PO Box
Then I save all the information. While running the program I noticed that I forgot to put a remove/delete button. I close the program, and I edit my project to put the button (remove).. after editing i try to publish, uninstall and install the program. I noticed that the information I save in the program is gone. My Question is: Is it possible to update your program with out affecting the details/information of your program?

I am working on a media player, and I would like to setup a local playlist feature. I am using a single ListBox and its "Display-" and "Value-Member" properties. The display is the song's Artist and Name, and the value is the song's file path (i.e 'C:UsersUSERMusicetc.').To write the file path to the .txt file, I believe I can use the following code:[code]

First of all, I hope my intention is not missconcept.I would like to add an update from the internet mechanism for my newly VB.NET application.The idea is simple. That is, I ZIP all of the binary that need to be changed, upload it in my own hosting site, and download it using my Update Application, extract and overwrite the existing binary.
It works, quite well. But the problem is, the size of the binary itself is quite big (around 36MB). I am thinking of patches. That is, can we upload only the patch file, it surely make the download small isn't?

I'm using the SaveFileDialog to save listbox info into a text file. The files save fine, but when you go to save the file, if you hit the cancel button, it will overwrite the previous file you saved, because it's name was the same and it seems to save the previous file as the new name for your next file. Is there any way to catch if the user clicks cancel, and then exiting the sub if they did?

where can I find information on how to take info from a text box and save it to a file and later retrieve the info and print it out on a printer or back into text boxes? Also creating a database.Example. The Database will contain a list of customers. Within each customer profile there could be any number of databases for just that customer. and with in each database there is a system to keep track of different things.
Main Database = List of different Customers
Customer Data Base = List of different key systems.
Customer database key systems = list of key generated and if the have used that number or not. (Along with other info)
Where is a good place to start.
Basic File saving to complex file saving.

I am doing an assignment for my intermediate programming class. It is due tonight at 730. Anyways, I am almost finished, but I have run into a snag. I have this "bank application" and we are storing the info in a text file. However, whenever there is a deposit or withdrawal, the "accounts.txt" file is to be updated. All of the new account info is being written to a "Temp.txt" file and eventually will be renamed to the new "Accounts.txt" file. The problem I'm having is that it isn't writing non-updated account info to the temp file and I don't know how to make it do that while keeping the accounts in order and not rewriting the same account info more than once.
Here is the code for the entire project so far:
Imports System.IO
Public Class Form1
Private Sub btnProcess_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnProcess.Click
lstDisplay.Items.Clear()
[Code] .....

I pretty much understood how to write text to a file, but I cannot grasp how to READ the information. After I read the information, I would like to add each seperate line to a ListBox. Each line in the text file is a file path for a music file, as the file I wish to read information from is a "custom extension" playlist file. I know what to do after I get the file path, but I do not know how to get the file path from the playlist.

So I'm having more database problems. The specific problem I am having is that I am trying to update a DataGridView to display new information that was input into the database programmatically. I have tried several methods, but none have worked, and one actually "broke" the program. So I am in need of some more assistance.
Here is the current code that I am trying to use to update the view (this contains pretty much everything that I have tried up until this point):

I'm trying to open a text file that was already generated with info inside.I want to read specific lines and have them changed via user input.the lines are not consistently on the same "line".An example of the text I'm trying to read and change is:
// General (upgradeable) values the Player sees for each system
hullLevel = 1700
weaponsLevel = 1450
[code]....
The "H" in hullLevel shows up in line 26 in some of the files, line 27 in other, line 36 in some others and line 37 in yet others.
The reason this jumps around is that this comes from a file that is edited by other modders when they create a ship for a game that I'm modding.My program is designed to allow the user to visually see a representation of how strong and well equiped a ship is and change the values of each line with a slider bar.I have all the slider bar and progress bar code worked out.
I just need a way to reliably pull these lines no matter where they are from the ship file chosen by the user so that the program can edit them without disturbing the rest of the text in the file.

I am writing a program that lets someone click on a picture to vote for their favorite pet. The part I am stuck at is: when the application is opened and closed it needs to remember how many votes there were. To do so, when the program is closed I have the information stored in a .txt file. it looks something to the effect of:
name, type, votes
andy, bear, 0
bart, dog, 0
candy, cat, 0
hopsie, bunny, 0

I've got a program which acts as a schedule for sporting events.The program allows users to fill in event details and they get saved into a directory for the selected date and venue, and in it are text files with the details, and then on another page is a listbox containing all of these directories so that the user can view saved events, and the page retrieves the details from the text files and displays them how I wanted it to.BUT, my 'update' feature just will not work.
basically, I want the user to be able to change the details and press 'update' which will then write the new information to the relevant text files, BUT i get this error in debug mode:
The process cannot access the file 'C:Events PlannerSaturday, May 29, 2010 testvenue.txt' because it is being used by another process.
The code I'm using is below, and from what I've learned, and how I've already coded this program, it should work right?
Code:
Dim venueReaderUpdate As System.IO.StreamReader
venueReaderUpdate = _
My.Computer.FileSystem.OpenTextFileReader(ListBox1.SelectedItem + "venue.txt")

I am trying to do is fill out a form with certain info, put the info into an array, and write it to a listbox using loops, arrays, and maybe a function if I need one. I'm new to Comma Delimited values. What I'm trying to do is load up a text file which has employee info separated with commas
like 1/1/09, John Smith, (555) 555-5555, 101 S 1st Street and has numerous rows of info like this
so what I want it to do is just write this info to 4 different textboxes
like txtdate would just have all the dates of employees listed in rows or multilines
then another text box for names and so on.. Right now I just have it all being written to one text box.
I'm not sure how to separate all the information accordingly.

I am working on a program using VB.Net 2010 which will enable me to setup groups of files & folders for back up with syncing capabilities etc. I have a concept program which is based on some sample code I found out in one of the VB.Net forums. I have modified it from a command line based program to a form based program. At the moment I consider this code to be a "concept" program which once I have the various copy/sync routines developed and debugged will be integrated in to another program I wrote for
creating "Back Up" groups to automate the process. There are some 3rd party programs that do similar things that I want to do such as Microsofts Sync Toy, but none of them offer the grouping and exclusions options that I am going to program in to this backup/sync program.
So here is my problem, I have the included code taking two folders, a source and a destination, and copying everything from the source to the destination. It will skip over any unchanged files/folders and will delete anything found in the destination folder that is not found in the source folder and it will update all files in the destination folder that have a newer version in the source folder. In other words it will mirror image the source to the destination but will be smart enough not to copy unchanged items from the source to the destination thereby saving a lot of time. The sync part of the program is working fine, the displaying of the progress and results is not.

I am creating a quiz game and I am having the users initials and scores saved to a text file. I then want a messagebox to display the text file.
I have two major problems.
1) I can get the text file to add a new line each time, but the message box displays all the text in one line.
2) The first entry in the messagebox is "form1" even though that isn't in the text file anywhere.

I guess that I should preface this by saying that I am totally new to VB, but I come from the PHP/MySQL world so I can work my way through things syntactically. That being said, I have made a program that expedites a few things that I do on a routine basis at my place of work. However, because I have no idea what I'm really doing, my app logs up while the UI thread does all the background work.
What I am trying to accomplish, is a few things. Have multiple functions/subs [done]Somehow generate a generic method that executes a sub when called (one at a time, always)My already coded subs return values (for updating a progress bar for example) but have the background thread that spawns the function, update my UI threads progress bar / list box with the output.I guess I want to know if this is even doable, and secondarily, how would I go about doing this? I understand the idea of threading, but all of the tutorials that I have seen / read are pretty convoluted.

I have an application that gathers data from a SQL database that is used by a 3rd party helpdesk application.My application is pulling out information of the number of hours worked by each engineer for the current and previous 2 months.Also as part of this process, my application works out the target hours for each of those months.
My application has 3 groupboxes whose label is generated at runtime. My application gives the Groupbox1.text the name of the current month, Groupbox2.text the name of the previous month, and Groupbox3.text the name of the month before that (e.g. Mar, Feb, Jan).
What I am trying to do is have 2 text boxes for each month where I can enter the number of engineer holidays taken and the number of public holidays if any. I want to store these values in an XML file, and I guess they need to be stored to match the Groupbox text (i.e. Mar, Feb, Jan).
When the application starts, I need to parse that XML file and re-populate the text boxes with those number of days - BUT if the month has moved on, so that the Groupboxes are now called Apr, Mar, Feb then I want the Mar and Feb data to be loaded, and I want the XML file to be updated so that Apr is added and Jan is removed from it.I want the XML file to keep the current and previous two months figures only.

So - I have some text in an RTF control. I want the user to be able to highlight text and apply an attribute. The following code is placed into a button called BOLD and seems to work nicely:
If rtfText.SelectedText.Length > 0 Then
rtfText.SelectionFont = New Font(rtfText.SelectionFont, FontStyle.Bold)
End If
The code above will turn the selected text bold.
But then the user selects the Same text and with the following code placed into a button called ITALIC it removes the bold attribute and replaces it with italics.
If rtfText.SelectedText.Length > 0 Then
rtfText.SelectionFont = New Font(rtfText.SelectionFont, FontStyle.Italic)
End If
Since the users actions are separate - I can not know that they want BOLD and ITALIC, so how do I make sure I keep the existing attribute on the selected text (which, by the way could be part bold and part not-bold) and add italic?
Somehow I need to add the italic attribute to the selected text, not simply replace all attributes with italic.
