Ascertain If The Tableadapters Underlying Data Has Changed?
Aug 3, 2011
I am retrieving data from my database using a TableAdapter. I was wondering if there is some way I can tell (or be informed) that the data has changed and I therefore need to do another Fill? That way I can just Fill on demand rather than every time the user requests to see the information and I am forced to do a Fill before showing the data because I don't know if is current or not. For the record I am using an ODBC connection string to access a Pervasive PSQL database
EDIT I was thinking I could check the last write time of the MKD file to check if this has changed but this doesn't seem to be reliable as it is not written to until the connection is closed. Does anyone know the circumstances when this is written?

I've written a custom class MyClass and marked it with the <Serializable()> attribute. I have a set of binary files on my hard drive that I've serialized using BinaryFormatter that came from instances of MyClass.
I've recently changed the structure of MyClass slightly (added some properties, deleted some properties, changed a few methods, etc).
What happens when I try to deserialize the existing objects to this changed class using the code below? I've tried it and not had an error thrown or anything - but surely it can't deserialize properly when the class has changed? Is there a way I can get some useful information out of the serialized files even though I've updated the class?
Here's the code I'm using to do the serialization:
Public Sub serializeObject(ByVal obj As Object, ByVal outFilename As String)
Dim fStream As FileStream
Try

on my Form I have a DataViewGrid and some textboxes with a save button (they are filled with additional data of the selected row).Save is disabled first, when I change something in the textboxes the save button is enabled. When the user changes a gow in the grid, I want to ask before changing the grid row, if he wants to save (if the button is enabled).I am using RowEnter but this is too late, then the selected row already changed (and my textboxes already got new data)...What event can I use to ask if I should save stuff before the user changes a row?Something like BeforeRowChanging with a chance to cancel changing the row?

I have an object databound to a WinForm. One property, BOLNumber is bound to a textbox on the form. When you change the value in the form, the underlying BOLNumber property is changed. But the property setter does some "formatting" to the value. I want to BOLNumber textbox to reflect the changes to the value made in the property setter immediately upon the textbox losing focus. I tried implementing the INotifyPropertyChanged interface, but I am either doing something wrong or misunderstanding something it would seem. How do I get the databound control to reflect the changes to the underlying data source?
Public Event PropertyChanged As PropertyChangedEventHandler _
Implements INotifyPropertyChanged.PropertyChanged
Public Property BOLNumber As String

I changed my Username on my computer from i.e. "xxxxxx x xxxxx" to "Dennis"
VB 2008 during a compile gave me the following error: Error reading icon 'C:Usersxxxxxx x xxxxxAppDataRoamingMicrosoftVBExpress9.0VSProjectApplication.ico' -- The system cannot find the path specified.
The file "VSProjectApplication.ico" is in 'C:UsersDennisAppDataRoamingMicrosoftVBExpress9.0'
Somewhere in the VB2008 "configuration" files I believe that I need to manually change the old path to the new path.
I found the old path in the ".suo" file. The ".suo" file is not a text file. How can I edit the .suo file, save it so that it will work?

Ok, I have been going around and around with this for hours (Searching, etc). This is what I want to do, I want to load data into a Text Box and if the user changes the text in the Text Box I want to be able to save the new text.
My problem in the TxtBox_TextChanged event the data contained in the txtNarrative Text box is the new data that the user typed in (<>ABCD) but in the btnSubmit_Click event the data contained in txtNarrative is the original value ABCD.

When a person makes changes on my datagridview and closes it, I want it to automatically go into the database and update in a new column (which is already been created) the text "changed".
Everything in my tableadapters already works. Its just the VB part which I dont know how to call the update command. Here is what I have in my updatedataset().
Private Sub UpdateDataSet()
Dim datasetChanges As datasetTs = New datasetTs
Me.bindingsourcet1.EndEdit()

'm developing multi user systems where for example I could have a form with a list of users on it. If a user on another system adds a user then I would ideally like for the new user to show up on my list reasonably soon. While that could be done by getting refreshing the list every couple of seconds I would prefer to be able to identify that a change has happened and then be able to decide what to do from there (whether that be actually refresh the list or inform the user that a change has happened and ask them what to do).
The only way that I can think of doing this is to store the information that was originally retrieved and then every x number of seconds requery the database and then compare the two sets of data, if there are differences then raise an event.

I have a form that builds and populates dynamic text boxes from parsing a file. There is a "Last Name" text box that when populated, also labels a tab page with the name. After the form is populated, the user can change data as they desire but I was wondering how to update the tab page text when the user updates the last name text box? All the controls are built in code.

Most of my programs use table adapters, and the connection strings are stored in app settings. This works fine, but was a real PITA when switching from development to production environment. I had to change manually the connection strings before and after starting my work on any app.
After a bit of research I found how to switch connection strings for table adapters dynamically. By simply adding a custom property for connectionString, I was able to acheive this. But I still have to add code in the new event for each application so the connection strings get switched when it loads. (My connection strings are kept as an app property setting in a common DLL. I just keep one copy of the DLL with my connection strings locally, and one copy o the DLL with the production connection strings on the production server.)
I'd like to take this one step further and have either have the datasets change the connection strings for all table adapters they each contain when they load using the new event, or do the same from a VB module. I may have up to 3 datasets at any one time.

I added few new tables on data sheet (file name nwinddata.xsd) but the new added table adapters does not appear in toolbox whereas the old adapters were appearing. I read somewhere and followed their advice to delete the project and re add the project to the solution explorer, did that, now i can't even see old adapters in tool box all gone. When i restored my backup old adapters appear in toolblx but few days of will be lost which i don't want.

Cause I just dont get whats going on here. I have a bunch of combo boxes linked to their own Tables in my database, 14 in total. My problem is that only 13 of them work and every one I add after 13 doesnt work for some reason. So I make a ComboBox, press the arrow in the upper right corner and click "Use Data Bound Items", Then I fill in the rest as it should be. But only the "Selected Value" function actually works. I can fill in data to my other tables manually through this ComboBox, but I can not view my Data Source! If I use the same ComboBox and use any other Table it works, but not anything past my 13th table. The BindingSource is there, so is the TableAdapter. If I preview a select quary to the database it works as it should. But for not in the ComboBox!
Its driving me mad, can someone explain to me what might be going on here?

I have read and worked through all of the examples in the book "ADO.NET 2.O", but there is so much there with so many ways to handle data, I am having difficulty translating the examples into my own real life application. I am confused about creating runtime connection strings, connection strings in my app.config file, connection strings in the properties for a sql connection control, etc.
I have a midichildform with a datagridview control, and I use a table adapter to edit and update the SQL Server 2005 Express edition database. There is no problem there. However, I also have a button control that I want to use to "process" the data that has been updated with the table adapter. I want to open the updated table, read each record on at a time, manipulate the data and add a records to another table. Do I have to create a connection string and an oleDBconnection? Or can I somehow use the connection string that is in my app.config file? [Code]

I'd like to keep all my SQL data related code in a separate class and only have UI related code in my main form. However, the TableAdapters are automatically placed on the main form and, of course, the auto-generated code placed in the Form_Load event.
Obviously, it's easier to keep it like that but is it possible to move them to a different class?

I am trying to get my grid to refresh automatically when the underlying data is updated in the database. Isn't this supposed to work? Or am I missing something? I created a DataTable within my DataSet. Then I created a new form and added a DataGridView (actually I'm using DevExpress' XtraGrid but am trying to get it to work with just the Microsoft controls). I use the menu in the upper left of the grid to set the grid datasource to the datatable in the project data source. This then automatically adds the dataset, BindingSource, and TableAdapter to the form.

I have been trying to do this for ages and having no joy whatsoever.
I have a ribbon window of the following hierarchy:
MainWindow
MainContent (Tab Control)
TabContainerViewModel
ViewModelBase
View model base has an ObservableCollection of tabs type ViewModelBase. The Tab Control itself is binding fine to these, displaying appropriate view models. I have 2 problems however, I want a "NotepadView" (Of type viewmodelbase) to be replicated numerous times (one view many view models).
At the minute, I have 4 views (NotePadViewModelx where x is 1-4) with corresponding viewmodels, this is because each view had the same text per tab. Now I have individual views per tab.
When I type into tab 1 and switch to tab 2, I lose what I typed in tab one when I click back.
