Asp.net - Handling Errors From HttpWebRequest.GetResponse?
Jul 16, 2009
I'm having a ridiculous time trying to get an SMS API working (ZeepMobile, if you're interested) with .NET... I've been around .NET for a few years, but with all this social networking and API stuff, I need to get into the HttpWebRequest a bit. I'm new at it, but not completely new; I was able to hook up my site to Twitter without too much fuss (ie, I was able to modify someone's code to work for me).
Anyways, the way their API works is to send an SMS message, you send them a POST and they respond back to you. I can send it just fine, but every time I do, rather than echo back something helpful to figure out what the error is, I get the Yellow Error Page Of Death (YEPOD) saying something to the effect of "The remote server returned an error: (400) Bad Request." This occurs on my line:
'...creation of httpwebrequest here...'
Dim myWebResponse As WebResponse
myWebResponse = request.GetResponse() '<--- error line
Is there any way to simply receive the error from the server rather than have the webserver throw an exception and give me the YEPOD?
EDIT: Here's my whole code block:
Public Shared Function SendTextMessage(ByVal username As String, _
ByVal txt As String) As String
Dim content As String = "user_id=" + _
username + "&body=" + Current.Server.UrlEncode(txt)
[code]....

I'm currently working on making a database driven app without using SQL and instead using a simplistic web directory to store information.Unfortunately after just beginning I hit a rock wall on creating a login screen. As it works right now, every user has a directory and within that directory is file called "access" which has a password. While I'm aware that's it not secure, that's later to come, but right now I'd just like it to work. But the program uses WebRequest to see whether or not there is a directory under the given username, if there is then the username is considered valid and it moves on to check the password- where I start to have trouble. The password verification uses WebRequest and WebResponse as well, using StreamReader to read the access file. At the moment, the password checker only works once in a single program instance. Otherwise trying to check another login will cause the program to hang or freeze when declaring the WebResponse variable (resp).
This is the password verification code (with URL's removed):
Dim Username As String = My.Settings.usrUsername'The function is in a BackgroundWorker so I use My.Settings to communicate with the UI.
Dim Password As String
Dim usrPassword As String = My.Settings.usrPassword

What is the convention in VB when a sub requires that a try/catch block succeed in order to function, but the catch block doesn't bubble the exception up?
I could put all of the code into the try block, but this seems messy since most of it doesn't need to be tried, it just needs the try to have succeeded.
For example, should the catch block exit the sub? This would work in my current situation, and if it is the proper procedure, let me know, but what about the more general scenario where both both success and failure require additional processing?

I'm working on an uploader built with an HttpHandler. I would like to create a routine to handle all uncaught errors including content length error.
CODE:
It's critical that I handle any 404.13 (request exceeds request content length) error in the httphandler itself.
I would also like Page_Error to handle any uncaught exceptions but it never fires.

I'm using Try/Catch blocks for a program calculating payroll and commission. I've dim'd my variables, and I've parsed them inside my Try/Catch blocks. It appears as if my Try/Catch blocks have been coded correctly. However when in run-time, my format exceptions will show regardless if I provided a correct input.[code]Is there an issue with my programming? Or could there be a property I'm over-looking for my text boxes? I'm stuck.

I am handling errors via my global.asax in this method:
Dim CurrentException As Exception
CurrentException = Server.GetLastError()
Dim LogFilePath As String = Server.MapPath("~/Error/" & DateTime.Now.ToString("dd-MM-yy.HH.mm") & ".txt")
Dim sw As System.IO.StreamWriter = New System.IO.StreamWriter(LogFilePath)
[code]....
In my code I currently have no other error handling. Should I still insert try, catch, finally blocks?

I have sql server2000 encypted stored procedure. I can not modify them. Typicaly all the procedures manipulate row by row different tables using cursors etc. When the stored procedure is executed at the Query Analyser screen, I see error being thrown in between but the procedures continues till all the records have been processed. This behavior is acceptable to the client. I now need to automate the process using VB.net 2002 windows application. I call the procedure from vb.net but the program throws runtime error on the 1st occurance of a error in the stored procedure.

I tried using suggestions from other posts for this and still no resolution. When sending a POST request, at times it will just begin to freeze and stall. I set up my code as follows and now basically if I cannot figure out why it is freezing, then itneeds to timeout, handle the exception and restart the function.
For i As Integer = 0 To searchItems.Count - 1
If uri.Scheme = uri.UriSchemeHttps Then
Dim request As HttpWebRequest = HttpWebRequest.Create(url)
[code].....

I'm trying to set a near-infinite timeout value on a WebRequest, considering that the HTTP-based API which I'm querying already graciously handles timeouts by sending back an XML document that declares a timeout. For some reason though, the following code still throws an exception:

I'm trying to download a file using ftp and then using a streamreader to read it and write it to a text file. The problem is, when I download the file and read it, either it did not get all the data or it stops writing the data to the local file and doesnt produce any error, it just sits there. I've tried it with many different files from the ftp site and this always happens.
Private Sub Download(ByVal stateURI As String, ByVal userName As String, ByVal pWord As String)

I have a .net application that uses customerrors web.config module to display meaningful messages for errors. It works without any issues for 500 errors/exceptions caused by non-ajax and ajax components (updatepanel). However, in a scenario where updatepanel's asynchronous request times out, there is no error raised at all. I was able to see the timeout in firebug and come up with a solution that would at least display the error message as an alert and then redirect the user to the 500 error page using javascript but it's not quite doing what the rest of the application does in case of an unhandled errors like these. I basically just want everything to go through "LogEvent" mechanism so based on the severity of the error, it does the necessary work.This 500 error page doesn't have anything in the Server.GetLastError() for these timeout scenarios. Is this an expected behaviour? Can it be changed so I do have access to these timeouts in Server.GetLastError() OR maybe just run this error through "LogEvent" mechanism? Is there a better/more graceful way to handle this issue?
Below is my code to give you an idea, not exactly what I have in my application but pretty close.
Web.Config
<customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="~/Errors/ErrorUnknown.aspx" redirectMode="ResponseRewrite">
<error statusCode="500" redirect="~/Errors/Error500.aspx" />
</customErrors>

I am facing a strange problem with listbox. I need to scrab whois information. I used the following code to get source code of the whois query. It works fine if I use a textbox. But I need to use this for multiple url and therefore need to use lixtbox to loop through url list. Unfortunately when I use listbox1.selecteditem or listbox1.text it does not work. But this same code works with webbrowser.
Dim request As System.Net.HttpWebRequest = System.Net.HttpWebRequest.Create("http://www.networksolutions.com/whois/results.jsp?domain=" & listbox1.selecteditem)
request.UserAgent = "Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; .NET CLR 1.0.3705)"

I'm building this class to download files in parts/sections/segments. In .NET 4.0, I can use this code to specify the range to download from
long startPos = int.MaxValue+1;
HttpWebRequest.AddRange(startPos);
and it works because there is a long overload for the AddRange method. When I looked up the .NET 3.5 version, I realised the AddRange() method allows using int only. The possible workaround would be using the AddRange(string, int) or AddRange(string, int, int) methods. Since the class will have to work in .NET 3.5, I'll have to go with the string specification but unfortunately I can't seem to find any sample code that shows how to specify ranges using this procedure in .NET 3.5. Can anyone show be how to do this?As the first code sample I wrote shows, I would like to specify a range of type long instead of int. Using type int allows requesting for byte ranges only up to 2GB but long allows requesting for byte ranges beyong 2GB.
The question therefore is: How do I specify byte ranges of 2GB or higher on HttpWebRequest in .NET 3.5?

dim objrequest as httpwebrequest
dim objresponse as httpwebresponse

My problem is: for some url that function takes a long time. So, i just want to cancel the response after a given time. I tried with a timer control but that is not working. What to do? How to modify this code so this function will return result within a given time whether httpwebresponse completed or not?

how to write a httpwebrequest, however i'm unsure of how to write it with a if...statement. I have a file that I need to download, however it ususally doesn't get posted until sometime Tuesday afternoon, so what I need to do is have the program continually check say once about every 5 minutes until the file has been posted and then download it.I'm presumming using an if...statement is the best way to accomplish this, basically if true(file exists) then proceed, else wait 5 minutes and rerun process.

I need to do a xml query to a remote web site, something like <node>" "</node, <price>" "</price> and then collect that data and import it directly into a sql table. Any suggestions or directions?
