Asp.net - Performance Implications Of Opening Multiple SQLConnections In Poor-man's ORM?

May 30, 2012

I'm implementing a poor-man's ORM an a legacy application (.NET 2.0 web app, hand-coded SQL queries). I have two data classes: Customer and Order:

Public Class Customer
Public Property CustomerId As Integer
Public Property CustomerName As String

[code]....

I'm concerned about the performance of this method, namely if I'm pulling multiple Customer's. For each Customer pulled, I have to hit the database again (opening another connection), and getting the orders for that given customer. If I'm not mistaking, it wouldn't take many records to accumulate a large number of open connections.

How can I determine the number of new connections being made and whether or not I'll encounter any connection pooling or other such .NET-imposed limits?

One thought I've had is to pass the SQLConnection object created in the calling class to the getOrdersByCustomerId function and have that function use the (apparently?) already-open connection. I have not tested it namely because I don't know how to determine if it's better than my existing method. Thoughts?

I'm creating a search web service that returns JSON for processing by the client. The service takes a single search parameter, performs multiple lookups on different tables, then returns a custom JSON object. For example, if the user puts in what appears to be a name, I search both the Customers table for a list of the top n customers and the Orders table for the top n orders that have a customer with that name.

.net - Performance Implications Of Implementing A Generic Type And A Delegate In A Function?

Aug 4, 2010

I wrote a serializer (to Byte Array) for dictionaries that have a string key, but an object of some sort as its value.I've never implemented a generic type in a function or used a delegate before, so I'm a bit concerned about this being significantly slower than writing a serialization function for a specific type of Dictionary (Dictionary(Of String, MyClass) for example)Should this code be significantly slower due to the use of the generic type or the delegate?

[code]...

It works, and I could loop it and compare it to a more static Dictionary serializer, but I'm more concerned about when I start using this for a lot of different String/Object dictionary combinations, and it'll take me a long time to write a bunch of static dictionary serializers (that's what I'm hoping to avoid in the first place)edit: simplified intro text

DataGridView Has Poor Performance

Jun 24, 2010

I have a VB.NET app that has DataGridViews and Drop Down boxes.In VB6, the FlexGrid was fast, scrolling was smooth.Now, in VB.NET, the DataGridView is really slow to scroll through, and the dropdown boxes are sluggish as well.For the interesting bit. If I run Microsoft NetMeeting and either leave it open or click the X to close it (it still stays as a resident program in the system tray though), all the data grids and drop downs work smoothly again.If I actually terminate NetMeeting, they go back to slow/sluggish again.What is it (was it?) in NetMeeting that maybe can be incorporated into my program (some Microsoft library?) that changes how the graphics redraw?

SQL Performance Timeouts - Adding Multiple Rows In Multiple Tables In The Database

Sep 12, 2011

I have a vb.net web application and when a particular function runs , i get data timeouts in the rest of the application..(ie..row not found errors or column does not belong to table but it does) The function is adding multiple rows in multiple tables in the database and is running in a for loop. It seems to be all SQL related but I am not seeing anything in the error logs in SQL or in the application Right now I am assuming it is memory related where to start note..the for loop will be replaced with a bulk insert but right now I jest need to resolve the issue of the timeouts

ITextSharp Renders Image With Poor Quality In PDF?

Mar 26, 2010

I'm using iTextSharp to print a PDF document. Everything goes ok until I have to print the company logo in it. First I noticed that the logo had poor quality, but after testing with several images, I realize that was the iTextSharp rendering it poorly.The test I did to say this was to print the PDF using my code and then edit the document with Acrobat 8.0 and I drew an image. Then printed the two documents and saw the noticeable difference.My question is that if anyone know if this can be due to a scaling problem where I'm failing to tell iTextSharp how it must render the image or is an iTextSharp limitation.

VS 2008 .Net Poor Implementation Of Control Transferences?

Nov 8, 2011

What i really hate about it is if i have a control that custom paints then a transparent control within that control; it paints the transparent control as *button color* until it calls the transparent controls paint event again.... is there anyway to change the behavior of this so that it either paints the last draw over the control until it is actually repainted- or to @ least set a color other than button color?

you think it would @ least use the forms bg color instead - because it looks horrid when you have a black background with all of these near white boxes on it!

Multiple Projects And Opening Forms?

Apr 29, 2010

Over the past months I have been working on small windows forms applications and learning vb as i go along. The aim was to pull these altogether into one big application.

I am now at the stage of pulling these together I have created a new project (called MainMenu) and designed all the buttons and interface. I have added my other projects (SISApp, CURApp) to this project. File > Add > Existing Project. I can see these projects in the solution explorer.

Now my problem. How can show Form2 in the SISApp project when I click ButtonX in the MainMenu project.

I dont just want to show Form2, i want all the functionality and the database connection in form2 to also work etc.

Multiple Windows Opening While DEBUGGING

Jun 29, 2011

Since last 2 days I have been getting a strange problem with my Vb programming (VS2005). Whenever I open any Vb or C# code and press F5 (in order to debug), several windows open at a time like Memory1, Memory2, Memory3, Threads, Processes, Registers, Data sources. And simultaneously the SOLUTION EXPLORER that is present at top-leftmost corner generally goes missing. When I restore that and put my cursor over SOLUTION EXPLORER, the program hangs and a message comes as : "Microsoft Visual Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close".I have attached the screen shots of the problems to this Thread.I tried various ways like restoring my computer to an early date, repairing Windows XP and then uninstalling and reinstalling Visual Studio. But none seem to work.

Multiple Windows Opening While Debugging?

Jun 29, 2011

I am having a serious issue with Visual Studio 2005. Whenever I open any Vb or C# app and press F5(to debug), multiple windows open simultaneously like Memory1, Memory2, Threads, Processes, etc... Also, SOLUTION EXPLORER goes missing from top-leftmost area(where it is present usually). When I put the cursor over SOLUTION EXPLORER (after restoring it), the program hangs and the following message is displayed: "Microsoft Visual Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close".

There is no option to attach something, otherwise I would have attached the screenshots of the problems.

Multiple Forms - Quickly Opening All Tabs?

May 11, 2010

I'm just having a small problem with tabpages. I have a program that have multiple forms (on startup they are all created and hidden, except for the one being viewed by the user). When the user open one particular form, I has a tab control with two pages. I also have a toolbar. when the user click a menu option, I call a method that assigns all my controls to a variable (to be used in an insert statement later).

Here's an example of that Sub:
Public Sub SetValues()
'page 1
DateCreated = Date.Now
DateEdited = Date.Now
DateCompleted = Me.DateTimePicker2.Text
[Code] .....

The problem is, the controls on the second page cant be "seen" (this is confirmed by placing a msgbox in the above sub, which comes up blank) until the user open the second tab, at least just once. Then its ok. I know I can just run a small method to quickly open all tabs, but is there a reason this is happening, and a better way to do this?

VS 2008 Registry - Opening Multiple Files?

Mar 27, 2009

I have made a registry entry as follows: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTMy AppShellOpenCommandAnd gave it the value: "C:Program Filesmyapp.exe" "%1" "%2"I also had a drophandler to for the apphis entry works fine for opening one file that is dragged to my app's icon. The problem is that I can only drag one file at a time into the app. If I try to drag more, it only ees the first file and ignores the others. I use the My.Application.CommandLineArgs array to access the command arguments. For example, My.Application.CommandLineArgs.Item(1) will open the file. If I change the registry entry to:"C:Program Filesmyapp.exe" "%1" "%2" "%3"This will open the first two files, but ignore the rest. If I change the registry entry to "C:Program Filesmyapp.exe" "%1" "%2" "%3" "%4"This will have the same behavior as the previous entry and ignore all but the first two files.

Anti Multiple Opening Of Same Dynamic Child Forms?

Sep 14, 2009

I have a program that will let you open a certain table in the database and query it on a child form in a MDI parent form. Of course the child form is a new instance of an existing form.The thing I want to do is that the opened table in the child form cannot be reopened again in the other child form. So I did was to create a childform name on every new instance of a childform depending what is the name of the table.

The first thing I did to do this restriction is to put the names of the opened table to an public array and when the user tried to reopen the table, the program will check if the childform name is already existing... and if it exist it will not let the user to open the table in new childform.When the childform is close it will erase it's name to the public array. And it can be open again.If you don't understand what I want to do this is the situation for example in a microsoft office when a word document file was open it will be put in a childform, and when the user tried to open the word file again and still the word file is open in the microsoft word the application will tell it's user that the word document file is still open.

Multiple Windows Forms Opening Upon Program Launch

May 8, 2012

I am running Microsoft Visual Basic 2010 Express. I created a simple program that is nothing more than dozens of Windows Forms that are linked together by the various clickable buttons I put on each form. The program is like a "book" with several pages, and you jump to a specific page by clicking on specific buttons on the current page ("Windows Form").

My question is, how do I change my program so that when it is launched, instead of just 1 Windows Form opening, the program opens up several Windows Forms (of my choosing) automatically? In other words, instead of my "book" (VB program) opening "page 1," when I run it, I want it so that pages 4, 7, 8, 10, and 15, are "opened" whenever I run my "book."

Is there some code I need to insert into each Windows Form I wanted opened automatically when the program is loaded? Or is this a MS VB 2010 Express environment option I need to set?

File I/O And Registry :: Opening A Text File Into Multiple Text Boxes Using Loops And Arrays

May 20, 2009

So I'm in the final stages of finishing a program I've been working on for nearly a year now, and this is basically my final hurdle. The Save dialogue is working beautifully, with 'flags' in order to switch it over from the regular input into text boxes to the Listbox input protocol.

However, I'm having a *** of a time getting it to take lines from the text file and put them in the proper text box. Here is an example file:

Quote:

SHOWNAME
CALLNAME
BREED

[Code]....

So with the sample file I provided above, in the textbox named callNameText would appear "SHOWNAME", and so on and so forth. With this build, I get a NullReferenceException on the "Me.Controls(strboxNames(i)).Text() = strAllText(ati)" line.

High-Performance TLS With .NET?

Sep 6, 2010

I'm working on a project that calls for high-performance networking with TLS encryption in VB.NET. The stock SSLStream sucks rotten eggs; its 'asynchronous' read/write operations aren't async at all, meaning that they'll operate parallel to each other and to the main thread but that it offers absolutely nothing that resembles async read/read and write/write, which means that reads are totally synchronous to each other and writes are too (only 1 read and only 1 write can be done at a time).

I've done a lot of reading on this failing and it seems like MS has no intention of ever fixing this.Hoping a whole lot not to have to write my own TLS implementation. I've tried the Mentalis open source SSL suite, which will NOT compile. I've tried SocketWrench tools which will not compile under VS 2010 (and whose documentation indicates it's in fact synchronous on its async threads too; can only do 1 async read and 1 async write at a time).

What I want/need is an SSL/TLS implementation that actually works with DotNET that actually allows me to do multiple asynch reads/writes over a TCP/IP transport stream. Anybody have any experience or recommendations on 3rd party toolkits or alternate methods of SSLStream I/O?

IDE Versus EXE Performance In .NET?

Oct 5, 2009

I've developed a .NET application that, among other things, does the following:Uses WebClient to retrieve data from a remote server.
Serves as a socket server to 2 'satellite' applications run on the same machine or on a LAN.When I run the app in the VS IDE, it works great. It quickly gets the data from the remote server and communicates perfectly with the 2 satellites.However, when I build it and run it as an EXE, the response from the remote server is very slow and its communication with the 2 satellite applications become very poor.Is there some important difference between running an app in the IDE and running it as an EXE that could effect it like this?

Linq To SQL Performance Using Contains?

Jun 1, 2009

I'm overloading a vb.net search procedure which queries a SQL database.One of the older methods i'm using as a comparison uses a Stored Procedure to perform the search and return the query.My new method uses linq.I'm slightly concerned about the performance when using contains queries with linq. I'm looking at equally comparable queries using both methods.Basically having 1 where clause to Here are some profiler results;

Where name = "ber10rrt1"
Linq query : 24reads
Stored query : 111reads

[code]....

Forgetting for a moment, the indexes (not my database)... The fact of the matter is that both methods are fundamentally performing the same query (albeit the stored procedure does reference a view for [some] of the tables).Is this consitent with other peoples experiance of linq to sql? Also, interestingly enough;Using like "BER10%"

resultset.Where(Function(c) c.ci.Name.StartsWith(name))

Results in the storedproc using 13125reads and linq using 8172reads?
