Using NPOI and attempting to follow a tutorial here: [URL]..I'm coming across an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error at this line: sheet.GetRow(1).GetCell(1).SetCellValue("some test value")
when trying to use this code:

Yet the question is still open...why didn't the code in the first example work? Do you have to declare every new row of data? What happens when you have lots of rows of database data?

I have a an excel file that has been manually populated, and now needs to be automatically populated using ASP.NET, vb or c#. I've been looking around, and have found examples on how to export a gridview, and data to excel sheet, but not anyway to maintain the format of the original template. I've recently populated a word document using merge fields... does excel have anything similar? Could I break the file down into XML and use that as a template?

I'm writing some project management software for a buddy of mine. He has some Word Template files that he uses to create his actual contracts to be signed. I'm trying to find a way in .NET to extract the contract data from SQL Server and use that data to automatically create the Word files for each project with the Template Data filled in.

In the Designing Class section of Sam's 'learning 2010 in 24 Hours', it prompts you to type the following two statements:

After you press Enter, VB is supposed to fill in the rest of the property procedure template but when I try it, this doesn't happen.I looked for a setting in the options dialog that might need to be set but didn't find one, if it exists.

In trying to open an access dataset I first click on add new connection and at the prompt enter a microsoft access database file. I click on test the connection and it says the connection is working. I'm, following the tutorial on creating your first program in Visual basic. I'm instructed to start a new project, and select windows form application. I can't get this to work. My program fills all the values into an Excel spreadsheet- no problems there. What I'd like to do is a print preview/print function. I can't seem to get my code right, all I get are blank pages in the print preview box.

So as I see it, this should open excel, then navigate to the actual excel file. The print preview dialog should come up, which it does, and the excel sheet1 should be previewing, but it's not? I don't have any errors, just a blank print preview. At least thats how I see it, but obviously I'm wrong because it won't work.

I have a template in an excel worksheet. I can successfully insert data into the worksheet and print it out with backend coding.
The problem I am facing is, the reverse empty space for the header and side is too much.
Is there any possible way to reduce the empty space?

Error Dropdownlist has a SelectedValue which is invalid because it does not exist in the list of items. Parameter name: value I have been banging my head over this error for about a week now. I have searched posted on other forums and still no solution to my issue. I have seen the FindControl being suggested but do not know how to implement this.
Basically I have 2 webmethods that reference 2 datasets which then populate my ajax cascading dropdownlist. In insertmode they work great however in editmode i get the above error.I have removed the selectedvalue and added
DataSource='<%# Bind("intRoom") which works sort of except for the fact that when you click edit it does not retain the original value of that particular record. Other things i have tried are as following:adding the items to the itemcollection of the dropdownlist turning appenddataitems to true on also tried to use the findcontrol but dont understand that punching my monitor and slamming my keyboard
Now I know i could get this to work by using a sqldatasource with some t-sql to get my dropdownlist to work however I thought by reusing my webmethods my code would be more professional. So if there is anyone out there that can help me understand why the value for my dropdownlist is not being populated or does not exist during gridview editing Also will post code if asked not sure what you would like to see rather than posting everything.

I'm working on my first T4 code generation tool to add some Stored Procedure helper code to my project. I've created custom types (e.g. StoredProcedure and StoredProcedureParameter to help with my code generation and have included the assembly and namespace references in my code:

This allows me to use my custom types in my T4 template code. However, because my custom types exist in the same project as the T4 template code, I can't recompile my project once I run the template code without restarting Visual Studio. This isn't very much fun.
I read a great article that addresses this exact issue by using the T4 Toolbox, but it's not working. Either I'm implementing the VolatileAssembly directive wrong or the T4 toolbox simply didn't get installed. I'm not sure that the toolbox got installed correctly (I'm using VS 2010 on Win XP).

There is no other workaround at this point, so here is what I am attempting to do:
1. Fill a DataAdapter from an Excel.xls spreadsheet.
2. TRUNCATE an existing SQLServer2005 db table that matches this excel spreadsheet.
3. UPDATE that SQL Table with the DataTable filled from the excel spreadsheet.
If there are anyother suggestions (OPENROWSET/DATASET is not possible for my situation, in or outside of a SProc),Here's the current dev point I am at --- no errors, but also the SQL table does not update.
