Bind A Few Values In Xaml To Variables Declared In The Code Behind?
Sep 30, 2009I am trying to bind a few values in xaml to variables declared in the code behind.

I am trying to bind a few values in xaml to variables declared in the code behind.

I have a list of variables that are being created on one line.
Dim strFirstname, strMiddleName, strLastName As String
Is it possible to set the values for all of them at once? I know this doesn't work, but this is what I'm trying to do :
Dim strFirstname, strMiddleName, strLastName As String = ""
How can I implement both of these ObservableCollections in my xaml? I want to have a listview with all my students, and another listview with all my teachers.For now I just made an example student and teacher object. Am I going about this the wrong way. Eventually I will pulling from a datatable, not sure how I would implement it to the ObservableCollection though.
Public Class PersonalViewModel
Public Sub New()
Dim obcollection1 As New ObservableCollection(Of Student)

In re-engineering a windows forms application, I find that a lot of code-behind in the various form classes is duplicative and I'm trying to centralize as many procedures as possible into a base class which can be inherited and used by the subclassed forms.
This process seems to be going well and is making the code in my subclasses much simpler and hopefully easier to maintain, but I'm not sure where to draw the line between leaving code in the subclasses and engineering for generic resusability and moving it to the base class.
Specifically, in some subclasses I have code which manipulates variables and objects specific to the subclass, and although I could move the code-behind into the base class, the base class code references specific objects which are needed to compile. For example, each subclass manipulates a databound datagridview and form detail controls which allows the user to select between multi-record and detailed single-record views of a datatable.
In Visual Basic 2008 do I need to declare dummy data objects in the base class so that the base class will compile? Or is there a way to indicate that the data objects will be provided by the subclass?

View 1 RepliesI have a simple table in an access database that I'm using in a VS2010 project. I have a combobox control that a user can select the horse power of a motor. I then take that selected value from the control and copy it to a string variable called gstrSelectedHP. All I want to do is run a query that will pull up the full load amps of that horse power motor from the table. I have the query already, but I need to somehow put the gstrSelectedHP in the WHERE part of the query so that it only returns that value.

I'm trying to create a generic Controller Class for generic events. But these these events still need to access their class variable. So my idea is to create the Base Controller Class with a ModelBaseclass variable as _ClassVar, which is inherited by all of the other class Controller classes will derive from. But I want the derived controller classes to override the _ClassVar with whichever one they need.
I want to do this, so the ControllerBaseClass can have all the generic functions that all the Derived Classes would use.

Public Class ModelBaseClass
Public Overridable Function Foo() As String
Return "Name"

View 12 RepliesI've gotten to a point where I'm trying to add a ComboBox to a UserControl, and to populate it from a collection which exists in code.
I've been getting along pretty much on monkey-see-monkey-do coding for the most part; copying and adapting existing code in order to get the next stage working, but this DataSource stuff has me stumped. I've been through a whole bunch of articles on MSDN this morning and am no closer to understanding than I was when I started.
Let me go through a few of the things that are messing with me, and hopefully you guys will be able to point me in the right direction:
1) None of the [UserControlName].vb files contains any code. All of the code for the UserControls is stored in [UserControlName]Model.vb files, and then code of the following sort is used:
<UserControl
xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation"
xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml"
xmlns:l="clr-namespace:MySolution"
[Code]....
1.5) (using bullet points means I can't use <> brackets or code blocks later on. What the hell, markdown?) Anyway...
2) I'm pretty sure I only want a Static Source for the moment, as the items in the ComboBox aren't going to change during execution, at this time. Problem is, all the articles I can find about this are gigantic, complex things about creating XML readers, and populating DataGridViews and sorting data, and on and on and on. I just want to declare that I'm using a frealing List! A List I've already created in code.
So, yeah, I basically need to use a Public Property ComboBoxLines As List(Of String) from a class which isn't the same class as the UserControl itself as the DataSource for a ComboBox.

I've created a Custom Control, and I will be placing a large number of instances of that Custom Control on my xaml page. In working with that Custom Control in the VB Code Behind, how do I do the following?
How do I reference the name of the Custom Control (in my VB code) which was clicked with the MouseLeftButtonDown event? For example, if I have 10 instances of my Custom Control in xaml, each with a different x:name (say 1-10), when a particular instance is clicked, how can I see which one was clicked? I've tried a number of things including e.OriginalSource.Name (which returns the component within the control which was clicked and not the name of the instance of the control). My Custom Control consists of numerous parts and pieces (Rectangles, Lines, Text, etc). Each of these items is a part of my layer. In VB code, once I can reference a particular Control, how can I hide or change certain parts of that control (such as hiding a Line, and changing the text). Also, I need to modify more than just the control which was clicked, so I need to be able to access properties of all of the controls, not just what was clicked. For example, if I click Control instance Test1, I also need to modify Test2, Test3, and Test5 in some way.
Here is some test code I through together as part of a Silverlight project using MS Blend 2. My control is much larger, and I need 200 - 250 instances/copies of that custom control, so I really need to know which control instance/copy was clicked.
My UserControl:

I've been building a simple card game in VB using VB 2010 express. I've built a simple Card class, as follows:
Public Class Card
Public Property Number As Integer
Public Property Suit As String
Public Property Image As String
End Class
I setup a base deck to create the unique, individual cards, which will then be used in multi-deck games. I have a game table form where the cards will be displayed. I declared this base deck inside the game table form and built it during the form's load event:
Public Class Main_Table
Public baseDeck As List(Of Card) = New List(Of Card)
Private Sub Main_Table_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim myCard As Card = New Card()
[Code] .....
Everything runs fine up until the end of Main_Table_Load. I've inspected the baseDeck values and they are correct. But when the Build_Deck_Click sub is invoked, the baseDeck collection's values become all the same, specifically it becomes composed of copies of the last card I built. I've stepped through the code and expanded baseDeck to confirm that all Cards become the same. I've tried moving the Public baseDeck As List(Of Card) = New List(Of Card) to a different module, with the same results. Since I will be using the baseDeck list through the app, I can't declare it privately inside the form_load event, as I'd have to re-create it every time I need to use it.
I have a VB .net application which works fine on a 32 bit systems. We tried using it on a 64bit Windows 7 system but it failed. So I set up an environment in a VM (windows 7 64bit VS 2005 SP1 all updated) and started debugging there. The problem I come across is, I have a module (Public variables and function declarations from a driver provider FTDI). When a function from module is called the result is saved in a variable also from module. But the problem is the variable is not declared.
View 1 RepliesI am looking for a good resource on variable naming conventions to illustrate variable type and where variables are declared. So I will have public variables, Private variables, private or local variables. I also may want to declare variables with the same name in different class code (i.e. in the code behind different forms). I am assuming good coding would dicatate a prefix for declaration location.

How can you use XML that you have declared within your code? Also, what is the correct way to put it in your code?
View 6 RepliesI have an object that I know was originally declared was an enum, but I need tothe specificnum type. I'm aware of the GetType method and it appears to work correctly, but I can't figure out how to go from there to a direct type comparison For reference types, you can use Typeof(object1) Is Class1, but this doesn't seem to work for value types.
View 3 RepliesI have a code in VB 6 but doesn't in VB.NET. Even I was converting, but, there's a thing that I can't convert because I don't know what "hProcess" means .
Look at the code below:

Public Const PROCESS_ALL_ACCESS = &H1F0FFF
Dim f1holder As Integer
Dim timer_pos As Long

The error says: Name 'hProcess' is not declared.
I'untangle a particularly malodorous collection of spaghetti code. Anyway, I have the following XAML code:
<UserControl.Resources>
<CollectionViewSource x:Key="XMLObjectGroups" Source="{Binding Path=XMLObjectList}">
<CollectionViewSource.GroupDescriptions>
<PropertyGroupDescription PropertyName="IsDateType"/>
[code].....
On the second line XMLObjectList is a readonly property of a ViewModel class, returning a Collections.ObjectModel.ReadOnlyObservableCollection(Of MyOrder).On the final line SelectedOrder is a property of the same ViewModel class, which allows setting and getting of a MyOrder object.
I have confirmed that XMLObjectList is being correctly referenced by renaming the property, mistyping the string, breakpoints, etc. XMLObjectList definitely references the XMLObjectList property of this particular ViewModel class.The SelectedOrder property, however, is never accessed at runtime, meaning that it isn't properly hooked up to the SelectedItem of this ListView.
I'm using Visual Basic 2010. I have my dataset in my program. I'm have several combo boxes on the form that I was able to bind the particular table with the information from each table to most of the combo boxes by dragging and dropping them onto the combo boxes. However, one combo box in particular must be populated by code. When a user selects, let's say "a" from one combo box, I need the next combo box to display information in certain tables only, based upon their choices in the previous combo box.
