C# - Custom Shape Object In MS Office
Jun 27, 2012
I want to create some custom shapes for MS Office which we can use in house.
For example I want to create a shape named "carton box" which have three - four default places where user can add some text. It is same as other shapes or I would say just like shapes (line, flowchart, arrow etc) in MS office 2007.
Is there any way to create and reuse such a new objects, also if user don't have these shape in their toolbox and get a document which includes these shapes; he should be able to see it (defiantly in read only).
Background - I am a .NET developer and also having small knowedge of MS office development in .NET.

I am looking to build some small custom buttons. I want to keep it simple and give them a gradient backgroud and use grey colours to illustrate shapes on them. Very similar to the buttons you see in Excel/Power Point/Word 2007 at the bottom right of the screen. The buttons are next to the slider bar which increaes the view % of the screen. These buttons are grouped together and have different combinations of squares/rectangles on them for viewing options Any idea where to start with the shapes?

I want to be able to create a custom shape that holds icons. Lets say for simplicity that it is a sqaure. I need the ability to load up to X amount of icons in the square. Lets say I need up to 6 icons. These icons will always be the same. However not all custom shapes will need them. I am assuming that I have to create a custom shape object class. I also want the icons to automatically adjust in size when I change the size of the shape. I am guessing that one way to do this would be to drop a TableLayoutPanel into the shape and then dock it to the shape. Then set the dock property of the icon to the cell that it resides into within the TableLayoutPanel in the shape. The number of rows/columns of the TableLayoutPanel would be predicated on the number of icons needed.

I am working on a contract to repair problems in a application that interfaces with a custom built digitizer tablet.The application recognizes the tablet at startup, initiates calibration to locate the pad limits and then saves those limits to file.During the run of the application the user has a cursor that is changed to a line with a X on the left hand side of it. The user then uses this custom cursor to click in a PDF document where they would like the contents of the Digitizer pad to be placed. When they click a box signifying the size of the digitizer pad along with the same blank and X appears. What I have been having issue with is that the box and the line with the X appear most of the time but on occasion the line and X appears at either the top or bottom of the box and the click is no longer at the line with the X but somewhere in the middle of the box. This really screws up things and often the user has to uninstall and re-install the application to get it righted.
The values that save the calibration points are bound to variables during the build process, there is a separate routine to calibrate the digitizer pad if the user desires to do it again.

I have been using custom shapes for some time now but the pixels always have to be 100% solid or it mixes with the color I have set as transparent and its starting to get a bit annoying. Is there any way possible that I could take a png image with transparent pixels and use that as my custom shape without the transparent pixels becoming that color I chose? This is what I have: I want to put my image as the background without the purple being where the transparent pixels are.
Me.Backcolor = Color.Purple
Me.Transparencykey = Color.Purple

I have a custom cursor for the user to allow them to position text in PDF files. For the most part there never seems to be a problem, but a choice few people are seeing massive problems with this.
One particular client loads the program, and then loads a PDF document into it. Once the program has loaded when the user clicks he either doesn't get a custom cursor or the signiture blank that is to show up is above the frame that is to surround the blank.
The user is using Windows XP on a laptop and the software re-renders the cursor and box every time. There is a signiture tablet that the user buys to connect to this software, and the user also has expressed problems with the Tablet not staying connected.
I can provide pictures of the changes and code if anyone would like to tackle this?

In VB.NET, say I have a function Public Function Foo(ByVal currentShape as Shape) Instead up passing in a Shape object, I pass in a subclass of Shape called Square like such: Dim square As Square = new Square() Foo(square). Do I need to convert my Square object to a Shape object before passing it in? If so, how do I do this?

Basically I've coded an Excel 2007 project in VB.NET 2010 that allows you to create charts with a fair amount of interactivity. I want the user to be able to save and reopen this workbook and still have that interactivity in any already-created charts, so they don't have to re-create them.
When I create the charts, I use Sheet1.Controls.AddChart(...), which returns a Microsoft.Office.Tools.Excel.Chart with which I can handle events and such. However, when I reopen the file and look through the Sheet1.Controls collection, there are no Chart objects. Accessing the charts through Sheet1.ChartObjects.Chart gives me Interop Charts, when I need the Tools Charts.

I am currently hosting an IE Browser control in a .NET (2.0) Form and using it to load Office files such as Excel and Word thusly:[code]The hosting and loading works well except whenever I navigate to a file I am presented with a dialog that asks whether I want to save or open the file. (This is standard IE file-download behavior.) I always want to open it of course and I do not want the dialog to show.Another issue is that when I close the window that hosts the IE control and the Office doc the document does not close and remains open on disk. This means that subsequent attempts to open the same file via my app or the native office app will fail because of the sharing violation.Is there a programmatic way of avoiding this dialog and cleaning up resources afterward? I am asking for a programmatic answer because web research has only yielded solutions that entail modifying OS-level settings.
Host an Excel spreadsheet inside my application.Work rather transparently (avoid usability issues like the one described above)Avoid having to make any OS-specific changes that may affect other applications (especially icluding IE)Is zero additional cost (no licensed 3rd party libs please) Code Project and other open source resources are OK.Not mess around with the DSO Framer ActiveX control, unless a stable version is developed/discovered

my program lets people pick their color to highlight different shifts.after data manipulation they can export the shifts to Excel.I want Excel to show up the same colors as the users picked so I know I need to add them to the workbook palette.the first color I import works fine but after that, all the colors get jumbled and messed up and put in random spots in the palette
WorkBook.Colors(paletteIndex) = RGB(dColor.R, dColor.G, dColor.B)
leads to
Excel.Cells(i, j).Interior.ColorIndex = paletteIndex
something must be wrong in these two lines. I get no errors, just the wrong set of colors.

I have created a custom user control (JCUserControl), and I am using it in the Main Window. And my Main Window has no codebehind. I have this in the JCUserControl codebehind:
Private Sub ImmediateRadioButton_Checked(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles ImmediateRadioButton.Checked
SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = False
End Sub
When I run it, it fails with the NullReferenceException. If I comment out the SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = false, it runs without any problems.
Edit: Found out that I could just check if the radio buttons are loaded before doing whatever I want to do.
Private Sub ImmediateRadioButton_Checked(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles ImmediateRadioButton.Checked
If ImmediateRadioButton.IsLoaded Then
SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = False
End If
End Sub

I have used Visual Studio 2008 (VB) to create a custom tab and button group with custom buttons. When any of those buttons are clicked, I simply want to run a macro (add-in) that will already be loaded when Excel is launched. The main examples I've seen create an Excel object in the VB code and then call the macro, but that seems like unnecessary overhead, since the custom buttons are are already loaded into Excel.

I have a simple COM add-in for office that I am developing (for access specifically). I have added a custom commandbarbutton item to the context menu that pops up when you right click on an object in the navigation pane. This works fine. The debug code I added runs (currently just a msgbox command). The one thing I cannot figure out how to do though is get an object for the object bound to the context menu.
I would like this to happen; I right click on a module in the navigation pane, select my new menu option, and then a message box appears with the name of the module that is currently highlighted. How would I go about this? This is how I am currently handling the event:

I am new to this forum - and while I have programmed in VB.Net for some time, I am also new to Office Automation - so please bear with me We are creating a Metrics presentation in Powerpoint 2003.Currently, the presentation is manually created. We are automating this through VB.Net. I figured out how to add the slides from the template. I can modify text boxes and other objects other than the MS Chart objects. I can modify MS Chart objects - but find that after updating the chart, saving it, and closing the application - it apparently doesn't save correctly. When I reopen the presentation, it originally shows up with the changed data. Once I double-click it, however, it doesn't keep the modified data.
I looked at the properties of the graph in VB.Net - and it looks like the chart shape is read-only. I thought of two solutions - one: copy the chart, modify a local copy, and paste it over the original, or two: make the read-only chart writable. Problem is - I'm at a loss for how to complete both of these.As far as the copying of the chart, I found some information about using the .Copy() command, so I cam up with the code

The problem with the following code is that the object oWB is visible and initialized in Form2, but when I show SaveDialog1, the object gives a NullReferenceException. I already know, because I checked in the debugger, that oWB has a valid reference when I leave Form2 and also when I come back from Form2. So I am sure the problem is that the reference simply is not visible in SaveDialog1 for some reason. So please don't tell me that the initialization of oWB returned a Nothing reference because I know it did not.
I get a NullReferenceException on the following line:
Form2.oWB.Save()
I researched this for a whole day and came up with a Microsoft article that explains that it is necessary to run each form of a .NET COM application on its own thread. It gave some code to accomplish this. I incorporated this code into my program. But I still have the NullReferenceException.
Simplified version of Code with most processing deleted below:
Public Class Form2
'Define Microsoft Excel Objects
Dim oXL As Excel.Application

If I use a single variable of type Excel.Worksheet to reference Worksheet1, and then change it to Worksheet2, Worksheet3 and so on, is it adequate to simply do "Marshal.FinalReleaseComObject(worksheetVariable)" once at the end? Or would I be left with some references still in memory? In other words, do I need to do a "Marshal.FinalReleaseComObject" before each re-assignment?
