.net - Custom Dictionary Object?
Dec 1, 2009
I want to extend the VB.NET dictionary object to not bitch about an item being already in the associative array.This is what i want to do:
[Code]...
My problem now is:How can I replace the (of object, object)line to let the dictionary be of generic/customizable type?

I have created a Dictionary class (MyDictionary for the example). I am currently trying to pass MyDictionary into a function, filter it into a new instance of MyDictionary and pass this new instance into another method. When I am attempting to create the second instance from the filtered first instance of MyDictionary via Lambda Expressions and the ToDictionary Method, I am getting the following error:
Unable to cast object of type 'System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary`2[System.Int32,System.String]' to type 'MyDictionary'. I have simplified the example and recreated it in LINQPad and am getting the same error.
Here's the simplified version of my code:

I'm trying to setup a WCF web service to be consumed by JavaScript using JSON and jQuery.I've noticed that you can send JSON without a DataContract if the service method parameters match the naming structure of the JSON object:
<ServiceContract(Namespace:="http://foo.com/bar")>
<AspNetCompatibilityRequirements(RequirementsMode:=AspNetCompatibilityRequirementsMode.Allowed)>

I need use a collection of differents types, this is:id (long), name (string), type (integer), open (byte) idReg (integer)I would like use it like an array but using the "field" id as key. The only way that i found for do it possible is using a custom class and then a dictionary.This is the custom class:
Public Class frmColeccion
Private m_name As String
Private m_type As Integer

I'm having trouble implementing an IComparer method. Essentially, I want to compare the properties of two custom objects (the properties are of type integer).dE is a Dictionary(Of String, customObj)prTabIndex is a property of customObj and is of type Integer (these hold true for all examples)After some more searching I found this thread which suggested 3 things: a List approach, utilizing LINQ, and using some C# 3.0 features. I've tried three different ways:...rolling my own IComparer implementation:
Public m As Sub(ByRef d As Dictionary(of String, customObj))
Dim sortedD As New SortedDictionary(Of String, customObj)(d, myCompare)
End Sub
[code]....
Note that VS2008 has underlined 'dE.ToDictionary...' (to the end of the line) and giving me two messages depending on where I hover my mouse:
1) "Data type(s) of the type parameter(s) in extension method 'signature' As 'signature defined in 'System.Linq.Enumerable cannot be inferred from these arguments. Specifying the data types explicitly might correct this error. Seen while hovering over "ToDictionary".
2) Nested function does not have the same signature as delegate 'signature'. Seen while hovering over anything after "ToDictionary".
Q1) How far off am I in each of the implementations?
Q2) Which one is the computationally least expensive? Why?
Q3) Which one is the computationally most expensive? Why?

I'm attempting to create a customized dictionary object, because I want to add some code to the Add routine, and I can't just inherit because Add is not overridable.
So I'm creating a class that implements IDictionary. Already I am confused, because Dictionary implements a lot of interfaces, listed below:
Implements IDictionary(Of TKey, TValue), ICollection(Of KeyValuePair(Of TKey, TValue)), _
IEnumerable(Of KeyValuePair(Of TKey, TValue)), IDictionary, ICollection, _
IEnumerable, ISerializable, IDeserializationCallback
But IDictionary inherits ICollection and IEnumerable, so why implement all three (and don't they have overlapping methods)?
#2, when I implement IDictionary, the code fills in two Add methods (one for the ICollection add of a keyvaluepair, one for the Idictionary method). Apparently both these add methods are required for Idictionary, yet a regular dictionary (which implements IDictionary) only has one Add method that I can see. I actually would like to have only one Add method if possible. Why am I being asked to make two (and that's before all the other interfaces have been added)?

I have a dictionary of type:
Dim parentDictionary As Dictionary(int,Dictionary(string,string)).
Dim childDictionary As Dictionary(string,string).
parentDictionary.Add(1,childDictionary)
Now I need to iterate over childDictionary to fetch key value pairs.My childDictionary is inside parentDictionary.

There a dictionary object that gets loaded with the following key values:
[Code]...
In most situations, life is good and all the individual key values are needed/unique. But in certain situations, the keys with letters behind them (ie...189a, 189b, 189c) all mean the same thing (ie...189). So I need a way to see if a key value exists (like the containskey method) for only the first part of the key and then return true.

I'd like to store a set of key/value pairs in the application settings of my ASP.NET web app, but I'm not finding a straightforward way to do that. For example, these two questions tell me that StringDictionary etc. won't serialize to XML and suggest that I'll have to roll my own implementation. But it seems like this should be easier to do; after all, web.config is XML and < applicationSettings> is essentially a collection of key/value pairs, so it feels like I'm missing something obvious. Given my specific case below, do I really have to roll my own serialization, or is there an easier workaround?
The web app in question is a basic contact form that sends email to different recipients based on the value of a parameter; e.g. [URL]...The goal is to be able add or remove recipients (or change their addresses) by editing the web.config file so that I don't have to recompile and can easily maintain different configurations in test and production environments. For example:
// I can use something like this for the sender address SmtpMsg.From = New MailAddress(My.Settings.EmailSender)
// And then just edit this part of web.config to use different addresses in different environments.
<setting name="EmailSender" serializeAs="String"> <value>webcontact@exampledomain.com</value>

I am writing a class library to interact with a domain Active Directory. In my object model, I have the following:
Domain;
Organizational Unit;
Group;
User.
In my Domain object, I have an Entries property and an Add() method.
public class Domain {
// The ReadOnlyDictionary<TKey, TValue> is a custom wrapper over an IDictionary.
public ReadOnlyDictionary<string, IDirectoryEntry> Entries { get; }
public void Add(IDirectoryEntry entry) {
Entries.Add(entry.Name, entry);
[Code] .....
For your information, I implemented the INotifyPropertyChanged interface to ease my life, but I don't seem to find a way to make it work the way I want. Perhaps am I not doing things right somehow, as for the location of different methods, I don't know. How can I make my Domain aware of a change that occured within one of its Entries, so that the TKey value is also changed? That is wanted because one could possibly add an entry, change its name meanwhile adding a new entry with the "old" name of the actual within entry, and cause a conflict, etc. In the end, causing the test to fail. But I'd like to make it pass like it actually is. Is there another better approach or workaround?

I have a VB.NET project where I am able to iterate through the keys and values collections of a dictionary object using an index:
MyDictionary.Keys(idx)
MyDictionary.Values(idx)
When this code is taken from the test project and placed into the real project I get the following error:
'System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary(Of Double, String).KeyCollection' cannot be indexed because it has no default property.[code]...
In the line in sub search that says "dtf.Keys(idx) = 0" place your cursor after the right parenthesis and backspace you should get a tooltip that says, "<Extension> ElementAtOrDefault(index as Integer) as Double - index: the zero based element of the index to retrieve.

I have created a custom user control (JCUserControl), and I am using it in the Main Window. And my Main Window has no codebehind. I have this in the JCUserControl codebehind:
Private Sub ImmediateRadioButton_Checked(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles ImmediateRadioButton.Checked
SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = False
End Sub
When I run it, it fails with the NullReferenceException. If I comment out the SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = false, it runs without any problems.
Edit: Found out that I could just check if the radio buttons are loaded before doing whatever I want to do.
Private Sub ImmediateRadioButton_Checked(sender As System.Object, e As System.Windows.RoutedEventArgs) Handles ImmediateRadioButton.Checked
If ImmediateRadioButton.IsLoaded Then
SomeTextBox.IsEnabled = False
End If
End Sub

I want to group items from a linq query under a header, so that for each header I have a list of objects that match the header title. I assumed the solution would be to use ToDictionary to convert the objects, but this allows only one object per "group" (or dictionary key). I assumed I could create the dictionary of type (String, List Of()), but I can't figure out how to write it. As an example I have written a simplified version below.

I have the following object:
countDictionary As Dictionary(of Category, Dictionary(of Date, Integer))
The Class has a Enumeration Property. For the purposes of demonstration, I'll call it MasterCategory.I have been trying to get out an object that looks like the following:
groupedCountDictionary As Dictionary(of MasterCategory, Dictionary(of Date, Integer)
The best result I could get was:
Lookup(of MasterCategory, Dictionary(of Date, Integer))
From:
countDictionary.ToLookup(Function(o) o.Key.MasterCategory, Function(o) o.Value)
Which results in a IEnumerable (Of Dictionary(of Date, Integer)) for each MasterCategory value.However, I need that IEnumerable of Dictionary flattened to one dictionary with all the integers summed (total counts) for each date. I then tried to use various selects and group bys (from numerous stackoverflow posts) to "flatten" it, but my efforts have fallen short.
Current Code
[Category Class]
- MasterCategory As Enum
- Name As String etc

I created a simple (for now) custom object:
VB
Public Class Form1
Dim AllPartFiles As List(Of Part)
[code]....
As I search a folder for files, it returns FilePath as a string for each file in the folder, then assigns a new Part.FullFilePath to the current returned FilePath, then add the Part to AllPartFiles list. So I can retrieve each Part from AllPartFiles later. But everything I try doesnt work.I know below is wrong, but might show what Im trying to do:
VB
Dim Files() As String
Files = System.IO.Directory.GetFiles(RootFolder, "*.ipt")
Dim k As String
[code]....
Create a New Part, change its values, and then add it to AllPartFiles list for later, then repeat?

If I have the following ASP.NET code (it's not complete - obviously there's a lot missing, but none of it matters):
<asp:GridView>
<Columns>
<asp:TemplateField>
<ItemTemplate>
[code]....
How can I bind the GridView so that one row is equivalent to one item in my MyListOfObjects list, and so that the data will populate and persist across page loads or postbacks? I've never done custom databinding like this before, so a full explanation would be very helpful. All the tutorials I've come across so far only talk about using GridViews directly with Database query results, and that's not what I need.

I am at a new company and I am building a wizard for a web app, (.Net/4.0). The user goes to a few separate screens during the wizard process and must return to the original screen before completion of the wizard. This is different from how they normally do this. But this is how it is TO BE DONE.
One option is to store the result of each panel in the main screen in the DB. So then, when the user leaves & redirects back. I could check for a querystring then call a datareader and populate original values appropriately.

I want to create some custom shapes for MS Office which we can use in house.
For example I want to create a shape named "carton box" which have three - four default places where user can add some text. It is same as other shapes or I would say just like shapes (line, flowchart, arrow etc) in MS office 2007.
Is there any way to create and reuse such a new objects, also if user don't have these shape in their toolbox and get a document which includes these shapes; he should be able to see it (defiantly in read only).
Background - I am a .NET developer and also having small knowedge of MS office development in .NET.

OK - for starters - I'm not even sure that the title of this thread accurately describes what I want to do - but I had trouble verbalizing it. So I will give this a try: In my application, I have a custom object, call it myObject. In addition, I have another custom object called myObjectList which is basically a List(Of myObject).
Up until this point, all of the functions that I have been working with in my BLL and DAL have been shared - I haven't needed a specific instance of my object thus far. I currently need to write a function that finds a particular myObject within myObjectList and returns to me myObject. I know that the List(Of T) has a find method, but from what I have read so far - I don't think it is what I want (doesn't it return true or false? -and also, do I need an existing object to pass to it to see if it is in the list?)

I am having issues adding a custom object to an arraylist at runtime.
Details of what Im trying to achieve.
My object is Fixture which represents a light. My light has the following properties:
Name, isMover, HighlightValue, UserNumber, Channels.
Channels is a dynamic arraylist which lists all the different channels of the fixture. A channel could be the lights colour or its intensity. A channel has the following properties:
Type, FeatureGroup, Value, Universe, Address, Slots and Offset.
Slots is the same again, breaking down to another ArrayList with more details.
Code:
Private Sub Patchingtest()
Dim TestFixture As New Fixture_Structure
Dim Intensity As New Channel
