C# - String.Format - How To Implement Custom Formatstrings

May 9, 2012

With String.Format() it is possible to format for example DateTime objects in many different ways. Every time I am looking for a desired format I need to search around on Internet. Almost always I find an example I can use. For example:

String.Format("{0:MM/dd/yyyy}", DateTime.Now); // "09/05/2012"

But I don't have any clue how it works and which classes support these 'magic' additional strings.So my questions are:How does String.Format map the additional information MM/dd/yyyy to a string result?Do all Microsoft objects support this feature?Is this documented somewhere?Is it possible to do something like this:String.Format("{0:MyCustomFormat}", new MyOwnClass())

Implement String Format To Get Valid Date

Nov 10, 2008

I have a string coming into my app that is in the form of:
"Fri Sep 21 07:17:46 2008 GMT" or
"Fri Sep []3 07:17:46 2008 GMT" ([] is a space)
The tricky thing is the space for the date. I currently split the string and grab what I need to make a valid VB date.

Code:
'Receiving a timestamp in the format: Tue Jan 23 19:33:31 2001 GMT
'Split it and grab what we need to make a valid vb date
_element = timeStamp.Split
_dateAndTime = CDate(_element(1) & " " & _element(2) & " " & _element(4) & " " & _element(3))
Return _dateAndTime

I'm running into the problem when the date is a single digit because there is never a 0 on single digit dates. So, when I split the string I get a "" for _element(2) and that's bad. I know workarounds to adapt for this, however, my question is: How to implement the String.Format to manipulate this string as is and make it a valid VB date? How to make VB recognize this string as a valid VB date without a prepending 0 on single dates.

Use A Custom Format String On .e.g A Zip Code?

Feb 11, 2010

What is the right way to use a custom format string on .e.g a zip code?

The zip code in the database might have 9 characters, but the program should only output five. Using string.format("{0:#####}","322318825") will output "322318825", the entire 9-digit code.

Zip codes are only an example. This is actually for a dynamic format function that takes two arguments, one is the format and the other is a database field value. Therefore, it cannot work by being strongly typed.

Apply Percentage Format To Custom Cell In Custom Column In DataGridView?

And does anyone know how you would set this up to take 0 values which do not create any graph effects at all.I have been trying to do this but keep getting errors.

In .NET String.Format Is Accepting Objects Of A Type That Don't Match The Format String

Jul 7, 2011

I have a function that is getting passed a String and a DataRow.The String is a custom formatter. The idea is to do this

String.Format(passed_in_String, DataRow("ColumnINeed"))

The reason this is being done is at this point we have no idea what the column contains.However, if the formatter is "{0:MM/dd/yyyy}" and the DataRow("ColumnINeed") is an integer containing 42, String.Format is returning: MM/dd/yyyy In this situation I need it to throw an exception instead of returning nonsense.Is there anyway to make String.Format throw an exception if the object does not match what the format string is expecting?

C# - How To Correctly Implement A Custom Timer In .Net

Sep 8, 2011

I have a requirement for a timer that has the following behaviour:

Millisecond accuracy I want the tick event handler to only be called once the current tick handler has completed (much like the winforms timer)I want exceptions on the main UI thread not to be swallowed up by the thread timer so this requires Invoke/Send instead of BeginInvoke/PostI've played around with CreateTimerQueueTimer and had some success but at the same time had problems with code reentrance and/or locks when deleting the timer.

I decided to create my own timer so that I could get a better idea of what is going on under the hood so that I can fix the locking and reentrance problems. My code seems to work fine leading me to believe that I may as well use it. Does it look sound? I've put in a check if the timer is deleted to make sure that the deletion is complete before the timer can be created again. Does that look ok?

Note: I should say that I call timeBeginPeriod(1) and timeEndPeriod(1) inorder to achieve the millisecond accuracy.(The following code is converted from vb.net to c#, so apologies for any missed mess-ups}

ETA: I've found a problem with it. If the timer is running at an interval of 1 millisecond, and I call, say, Change(300), it locks up @ while (this.DeleteRequest). This must be because the TimerLoop is in the this.CallbackDelegate.Invoke(null) call.

Implement Custom Character Encoding Into An Application?

Feb 20, 2012

I was wondering how to implement a custom character set for use by an application, i.e. hex bytes that are read by the program then converted and displayed in the window. If this requires first converting the bytes in a file to an already implemented character set, I'm cool with it - I'll go with whatever works or works best. I'm writing with VB.NET 2010, and running Windows 7 Home Premium x64, by the way.

Format String To Pass To String.Format That Would "move" The Decimal Point?

Aug 26, 2010

So I need a format string to pass to String.Format that would "move" the decimal point.I can't perform any math operations before doing the String.Format, so it has to work right off the bat.Basically I'm emulating a formatting string from a proprietary server. In it if I say:

"MR2"

for the value:

12345

The result is:

123.45

I'm close with this, but it's not spot on:

String.Format("{0:#0.##}", 12345)

an extra, but not necessary... there is also MR2Z, which moves the decimal 2 left, but if the value is 0 "" is returned.

How To Generate Custom Report In Specific Format

I am working on a simple window application (VS2010,VB.NET). It's an HR management App - Employees records.I need simply insert/edit Employee Info, reports in Excel (with out crystal reports) & Show in Grid.So I am thinking of using Telerik RAD WinForms (2011) only because it looks cool. But I also know that Telerik could be a real pain when you need more flexibility.Although my application is quite basic still I want to determine whether I should go with Telerik or just use standard Windows Forms functionality? How can I generate custom report in specific format.Also It would be nice if some one point me to some sample application or VB.NET windows Tutorials?
