I have an ASP.Net 2.0 textbox which I need to be validated as having some content, but where whitespace alone is valid input. A required field validator seems to reject a pure whitespace input as invalid. A regular expression validator won't fire at all on empty content. Is there a simpler way round this than using a custom validator control?
View 1 RepliesI have a web application where the user uses an HTML editor to input some formatted text to show on the website. This text is stored, as HTML, in a database. It turns out now, after some time, that users are sometimes entering whitespace (newlines, spaces, etc) before and/or after the text they are entering, and this whitespace shows up in the rendered text on the page. Multiple sets of this text are displayed top to bottom, and due to this whitespace the separation between bits of text varies, which doesn't look very pretty. So, I've been asked to get rid of the whitespace automatically.
Seemed like an easy task at first, I'd just call Trim on the string. But that won't work, the 'whitespace' when rendered isn't actually whitespace at all, it's a bunch of <br /> or <br> or <br></br> tags, or spaces such as, even empty paragraphs <p></p> sometimes. So calling Trim won't help, I need to get rid of all the tags that would render as whitespace.
The HTML editor control I'm using may or may not have built in support for this, but it doesn't matter, the database is already full with texts that contain these newline tags, so the best option I can see is to simply trim this whitespace before displaying it on the page. [Code]
I am just adding validation into a new winform. I am using the validating and validated events, in conjunction with an error provider control.No problem with first validation (ie. if user enters more than 12 characters). Error is set in validating event, and error stays until user enters 12 or less characters. Validated event is then entered and error is reset to empty string.
However, there is a problem with the 2nd validation on same text box. The code checks for zero length in text box.. and sets error with provider. Watching in the debugger, this code is indeed invoked, and error is set ok. Then something weird happens, the validated event is (unexpectedly) fired, and the code there promptly resets the error. Why is the validated event fired when there is already an error set ? This seems like a .NET bug. Can anyone suggest another way of doing this, or say what I am doing wrong ?

View 4 RepliesI have a problem in that I have five text boxes pertaining to a customer/client, where there is a txtbox for each: Name; Address; City: State; Zipcode. Of course all the txtboxes are "" at initialization. I also have 2 combo boxes and a 2D array for prices which I have finally been able to understand the array logic. I have also been able to do my necessary calculations for.
My problem. The customer information is first to be validated as all being strings and not empty. The combo boxes I was able to get to tie to my 2 dimentional array and get good output and calculations for a finished product. I am just having problems with the error messages. Also I don't want summary totals unless the data is valid. In other words, the user must enter a complete address and make decisions about the two combo boxes, both of which are needed to use the price array. I will change the comboBoxes to represent dress sizes,"S" "M" "L" and "XL" and the other combobox to describe colorRedSatin or colorBlackBroadcloth with a two dollar difference in price between them. 'That would be similar enough to the problem I need to solve.
Basically I do not want any numbers to appear for price of the dress or addons to the dress unless all validation is complete. I do understand how the radio objects work for discounts and check boxes for accumulating accessories. The program should not give any totals untill the user has input all customer information and made decisions about input from combo boxes and selected calculate from menu. Right now it calculates and puts zeros in when choices are not made from the combo boxes by the user. It will include correct amounts for radio buttons and checkboxes if anything is entered. I need error messages for customer inputs and combo box inputs (if not selected from list of option in drop down for choices) (basically if nothing was put in a text box, the text box is empty. Of course the problem is the user must enter something in all 5 textboxes and not get multiple error messages in rapid succession to fix. We can't always count on our users putting in good data.. When I tried a Do While False with ORs I was getting endless looping. I could not get it to work because it will never execute because the control never passes back to the user.
I don't want to list a series of If/Thens becauser the user will see about 7 messages, where he/she only needs to be fed one at the time. I hope someone can give me some direction. I just need guidance on how to validate the text boxes and combo boxes. The code is analyzed with a "Calculate" on the menustrip. I would like for the calculation not to calculate and put outputs into the summery text boxes unless all textboxes are filled and combo boxes are valid for all the customer information and combo box choices for my two combo boxes describing what is needed for the order to calculate. There are also the radiobuttons and checkboxes, DIMs, Const, Variables, but not having problems with that part I have my indexing problems on the combo boxes worked out also, so I am not concerned about those now except for getting the error messages when I should. I hope that I have described my issues fully. I am using visual studio 8 with Windows 7
There is an option in Visual Studio (since as far back as I can remember) that allows you to see "Whitespace" in your code. This is often seen in file differential viewers as well.
I'm wondering if anyone knows how this can be accomplished in VB.net (or any other way) so that i could use a similar type of display option in my software.
I have not yet tried to do this but my only first thoughts would be to override the "paint" of the textbox to actually add the little tab "arrows" and space "dots" manually via GDI, or create a texbox control from scratch. Seems to me there could be an easier way to do this.
I would like to pass a whitespace character by using the System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(" "), and System.Text.Encoding.Unicode.GetBytes(" ") , where " " is the whitespace Character required. What do I need to type (" ") to get a whitespace character passed.?
View 6 RepliesI am creating a converter program (lengths, weights and such), basically just for the learning process because I still find myself very new to this.Well it's like this, I have a textbox where the user is supposed to write the value of the unit he/she wants to convert. As we all know there is a possibility to write in many weird strings which the program later on result in a big error. I recently managed to get rid of dots, because the program couldn't convert if there were a dot among the numbers "." (commas "," works great!). And now there are other types of errors I need to get fixed. I will make a short numeric list.
1. I wonder if it's possible to make dots "." to mean the same thing as a comma ",".
2. I also wonder if i could disable letters a-z or like -#@%&]?! and so on, i just want the basic 0-9 with a coma or dot.
3. I tried to make a Msgbox that tells the user when he/she has done an overflow, a number to big for the program to handle, for example [Observe the code is also trying to prevent the user from writing a minus "-":

The minus thingy works great, but the 9999999... code, it always creates problems so I have commented it out for now until I know how to handle it.
4. Even though I got rid of the dot "." problem, the user is still able to write more then one comma, and I also want to get rid of that. The code I use right now for the "disable dot problem" is:

I have a textbox which controls the interval of a Timer control. How do I filter out letters? Is it possible to restrict entry to numbers only (like if you enter a letter or a space, nothing happens)? Is there a property of the textbox that can accomplish this?
View 4 RepliesI'm using the ErrorProvider in VB.Net (2005) which is associated with a BindingSource that is bound to a custom object that I have created. This custom object contains a date field that has a "Date" data type that. I am using a "TextBox" to bind the date field in my form. My issue is, whenever the TextBox loses focus and is blank, "String not recognized as a valid DateTime" is displayed by the ErrorProvider and the focus can't be changed to any other control on the Form. It's good that the ErrorProvider validates entries on Date fields by default (I didn't set up my custom object to display this particular error for the date), but it should allow blank values. I want the user to be able to have a blank date with no error message displayed. How can this be done using a Date field bound to a TextBox?
View 2 RepliesI have a modal popup that allows an admin to choose from a variety of checkboxes to add features to a specific product. If there is a checkbox that an admin believes should be available but isn't because that feature is not in the database, I have added a textbox so that user can add a new feature to the product.
Once I added the textbox, it stopped allowing inserts. At first it was in the same If Else as the checkbox for each loop, but I have recently changed it so the textbox is in it's own for each loop. I have an underline under the words txtFeature.Text that says Value of type 'Char' cannot be converted to 'System.Web.UI.WebControl.Textbox.'

I'm writing a part of an application for a movie ticket program.
Basically, I have to write an If statement verifying the age put in a textbox, based on a radiobox that is checked.
So, if the radiobox "PG" is checked, the age in the textbox has to be equal to or greater than 12. If "Restricted" is checked, then the textbox has to be equal to or great than 17.
I have a textbox, a standard button and a toolstrip containing a couple of buttons. In the validating event of the textbox i coded to check whether it is blank. If yes then it shows a message 'Enter Value'. When the standard button is clicked while the textbox is empty, it's validating properly and showing the message but when the toolstripbutton is clicked it's not not validating the textbox and no message is being shown. It seems that I gotto write the validation code explicitly in the toolstripbutton_click event which is too troublesome when there are multiple textboxes and toolstripbuttons on a single form. What I want to know is whether the textbox_validating can be fired while the toolstripbutton is clicked? Handling toolstrips is really a headache. I'm badly in need of it.

I have a MDIParent form and 2 child forms. One of them,form1, has a textbox for which certain validations are present in the validating event. The other one has a button on it. When I try to navigate from form1 to form2, the validating event is firing twice for the first time. Is there a way to make it fire only once. To my surprise, a google search revealed very little-- a few instructions using C#, but I'd really like to continue learning VB (only background is with VBA).

In WinForms I could handle the Validated event to do something after the user changed text in a TextBox. Unlike TextChanged, Validated didn't fire for every character change; it only fired when the user was done.Is there anything in WPF I can use to get the same result, an event raised only after the user is done changing the text?

I have form with ComboBox and TextBox. ComboBox has values A, B. And I would like to validate TextBox. If user select A so TextBox need to check for numeric and amount of numbers can't exceed 10 characters. If will entered not numeric characters error will indicated. If user select B so TextBox will check for string and user can enter any characters. Only if box is empty error will indicated.
