C# - Why Are Many Designer Classes In System.Design Marked As Internal
Aug 28, 2009
I have been developing some components for our products at work, and one of them is based off the flow layout panel. What i would like to do is provide a custom designer for it, but without loosing the features provided by it's default designer (System.Windows.Forms.Design.FlowLayoutPanelDesigner) which is marked as internal.Using Reflector i thought i would just implement it again myself, seeing as it inherits from 'FlowPanelDesigner and that from PanelDesigner` all of which are internal.
Why would these classes be specifically marked as internal? Is it due to them being specifically for Visual Studio use, and thus not 'framework' code? Also, is there an easier option that re-implementing all the functionality?

When I attempt to open forms in the designer in the IDE, I get this error:
Exception of type System.ComponentModel.Design.ExceptionCollection was thrown.
My project is building OK. Any ideas?

(I've answered the question below with a hack. I'm fairly confident in it unless MS change the way that codedom serializers the designer code.)ETA2:I've worked out what is going on. I wondered why sometimes it would work and not others. It boils down to the name that I give to the internal property and the collection. If I rename the property 'Annoyance' to 'WTF', it will serialize correctly because 'WTF' is, alphabetically, after the name of the collection - 'InternalAnger'.It looks like the serializer is creating instances of objects alphabetically and needs my internal property to be created by the time it comes to create the collection.I can fix this with a rename, but that's a hack and I fear that writing a custom serializer is a big job - which I've never done before.ETA: Jesus, I'm sick of this. This problem was specifically about persisting an interface collection but now on further testing it doesn't work for a normal collection. Here's some even simpler code:
Public Class Anger
End Class
Public Class MyButton
[code].....

I am using the O/R Designer to create entity classes in VB 2010. I am observing different results for different database tables that I can't explain and more importantly, can't replicate the results that I want.Using server explorer, I have dragged a number of tables on the O/R designer surface, thereby creating the entity classes.
I have saved the project and can access the various entity classes in my project code. I first noticed a difference when changes made to object instances from some tables/entity classes appeared to persist while changes made to object instances from other tables/entity classes did not persist. These object instances are created, accessed, and changed using the exact same code patterns except for the object, class and table names.
I have been looking to see if there are any differences between the way in which the entity classes are treated, either in my code, in server explorer, or in the O/R Designer. I cannot find any. The properties of the entity classes indicate that all of the classes use the runtime methods for insert, delete and update. As far as I am aware, I have not knowingly made changes to these methods.
The ONLY difference that I find is in the file NameofClass.designer.vb. This is an automatically generated document. The partial class of those objects that appear to persist changes contains different code from that of other partial classes where changes to objects do not persist. In the declarations section of this partial class, the following lines appear:
<Global.System.Data.Linq.Mapping.TableAttribute(Name:="dbo.OrderofBattle")> _
Partial Public Class OrderofBattle
Implements System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanging, System.ComponentModel.INotifyPropertyChanged
[code]....
If I am right then I want to enable persistence in my other classes by causing this additional code to be generated for them. But how? why the code for this one class hase been generated differently than for all the others (actually it is this way for 2 out of about 15 classes). What setting or or selection do I have to make to enable this code to be created for my other entity classes during the automated process?

In my friends company the management brought up the topic of moving in the WPF to design rich UIs. Majority of the employees of the company are programmers and only 3-4 graphic designers. The management wants to train the graphic designers with WPF so that their graphics skills could be applied in creating UIs. However, programmers have a mighty obligation for this. They have written several complaints to the management that WPF is not just Graphics but it has programming in XAML. SO the programmers wants to take over UI design as well (in the past programmers did the UI part as well)...... I'm a programmer therefore i'm with the programmers.
What would be the most suited solution for my friends compnay, should they move the graphic designers the WPF or should they train the current programmers to design UIs in WPF?

When attempting to create a UserControl type that must be inherited, when I try to edit one of its child classes in the Form Designer, I am not allowed to edit the child UserControl with the message:
To prevent possible data loss before loading the designer, the following errors must be resolved:
1 Error
The designer must create an instance of type "XX_ExpandContentsPanel2.IOCardMaster", but it cannot because the type is declared as abstract.
This error goes away if I remove the "MustInherit" restriction. Is there some way around this or do I just have to accept the (bonkers-mad) restriction, and not declare my class as as MustInherit, even though it's not a useful control in its own right?

I am creating a UserControl with rich design-time support that should eventually look like the Options window in Visual Studio (or many other applications). Basically a split container, to the left is a TreeView with 'option categories', and each node in the treeview corresponds to a 'panel' to the right with certain options.
Just for terminology, the nodes in the TreeView are OptionsNode objects, the panels (containing the controls that determine the options) are OptionsPanel controls. My UserControl itself is called OptionsView and is the control that contains the treeview as well as a panel that contains the OptionsPanels.
I have some experience in design-time coding, and I have gotten pretty far. The OptionsView control contains a property Panels that returns the ControlCollection of the right side of the split container. The user can add/remove OptionsPanels via this property (and automatically an OptionsNode is created). The property uses a custom CollectionEditor that tells the designer to create instances of type OptionsPanel (instead of just Control which is the usual collection type of ControlCollection). Furthermore, in the CreateInstance method I use the DesignerHost object and its CreateComponent method to create the panels, instead of just creating New OptionsPanel objects. This way the OptionsPanel created is selectable and editable (via property grid) during design-time:
vb.net
Protected Overrides Function CreateInstance(ByVal itemType As System.Type) As Object
If itemType Is GetType(OptionsPanel) Then

in VS 2008, is there a way to design a ContextMenuStrip in a designer without a relation to a specific Form or UserControl class? For example,if you need the same ContextMenuStrip in Form1, Form2 and Form3, in which of them am I to design the ContextMenuStrip? Do I have to add a "pseudo-Form" to the project that contains my shared ContextMenuStrips and create only one instance of that Form, or is there another way? I consider this a programmatic hack, that's why my question is whether the IDE offers something better.

I am building a permissions system in vb.net against the normal Windows Server file system. Have not decided on the best method, but is there a way to get access to some kind of internal GUID that Windows might store for a folder. If I just store the path for security, then it quickly becomes very hard to update a database storing path information to get security information. If a folder had some kind of internal GUID structure that would be great. Is this available?

I know it is possible to use the internal system speaker to generate sound.
EG
System.Console.Beep(500, 500)
'Beep(FREQUENCY,DURATION)
However i was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible and how to go about using said system speaker to speak - MESSAGE YOU ARE NOT AUTHORISED - for example
I am creating an app that allows admin access via a usb key (this is working fine) and i want their system to sound an alarm with a warning message should they try to force thier way into the admin section without the admin usb key.

Sometime ago I used to create all my class structures in vision before I wrote them. That however didn't last. I found it easier to just make little drawings with pencil and piece of paper. And I still do to this day. In code usually those drawings manifest themselves as interfaces which then are implemented by different classes. I do all this in code. And I was just wondering if there is any tools available in Visual Studio for VB.NET that would allow to create interfaces and implement them in classes (which a lot of times means just adding variables to class that will hold data passed with interface attributes) from design mode(kinda like using Visio only after you finish you don't have to write out code).

This is a followup to the question I asked here:

I understand the answer in the post above, which is absolutely amazing, by the way. It's about implementing interfaces with a class. However, what if a class needs to share features with another class?Yes, that class can an Interface. However, let's use this sample definition.

Or, in other words:An equippable item can perform acts outside of its typical usage of a shield or weapon. But not all items can act as a sheid or weapon.I mean, I could create a class that implements IWeapon, IShield, IMagic, IUseableItem, etc. But there should be a better way than returning NULL when those interfaces are called.

In my never ending search for more knowledge, I have come across Partial Classes. I was wondering if some of the kind people who actually understand the uses could explain some of them to me. Now I know that when we create a form that we actually create a partial class which the generator rewrites when we add a control or change a property at design-time, and this allows us not to have to worry about setting up the controls ourselves.

Background:I have a base class and several inherited derived classes. The derived classes don't always need to have the same properties. If any properties are shared among the derived classes, those properties would live at the base class level ('Contents', for example).Similarly, GoodDocument below has 'GoodThings' but would not want/need to have 'BadThings'.I want to treat instances of both 'GoodDocument' and 'BadDocument' as type 'Document'

I'm using a DataSet to interact with an accdb file in an application. While debugging, the app occasionally closes, without warning and returns the stack below. The code causing the exception is in the DataSet.Designer.vb file (automatically generated). What's curious is the line that reads:
If (previousConnectionState = Global.System.Data.ConnectionState.Closed) Thencommand.Connection.Close()End If Why would the code try to close an already closed connection?I just change the "=" to "<>"? Will it stick? (since it's auto-generated, I'm sure it will revert if I modify the dataset, right?)

Since most of the projects I work on are exclusively SQL Server 2005/2008 database driver, I was wondering about the implications of using System.Data.SqlTypes classes as data types in my VB.Net Framework 4.0 code. For example currently I define integer variables as Dim X as Integer.Using System.Data.SqlType classes I would define my intege variables as.Dim X as System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlInt32 implications for performance, serialization and databinding. One difference would be that all variables would default to Null.

I remember seeing somewhere on the net that there are classes in .Net that will return information about your computer. I know that System.Environment returns some of this information like MachineName and some other stuff. Are there other classes that will return information such as hard drive size, free and used space, total memory, used memory?

I created a server control which consist only of fews buttons.
CWNavigation.vb
<ToolboxData("<{0}:CWNavigation runat=""server""></{0}:CWNavigation>")> _
<DefaultProperty("Id")>[code.....
I then referenced it in my ASPX page. Take note that the control are in the same solution, same project located in Commun/Navigation/CWNavigation.vb.
<%@ Register TagPrefix="NAV" TagName="CWNavigation" Src="~/Commun/Navigation/CWNavigation.vb" %>
I added it to the page.
<NAV:CWNavigation ID="CWNavigationService" runat="server" />
But the designer file along with the code-behind generate it as.
Protected WithEvents CWNavigationService As Global.System.Web.UI.UserControl

I am looking at implementing a Web Service API for our product. I have figured out how you go about the general architecture/fault handling within WCF. My question is a more general one of how to design the overall error handling system. For example I have a method called SaveCompany (companyobject). Each company name needs to be unique. Say you tried to save a second company called "ABC Inc.". Would you expect to get back a fault named "DuplicateCompanyFault", or would you expect to get back an error code, or something else? I guess the root of my question is would you prefer to receive faults to handle, error code, or some combination? These services are going to be consumed by multiple different entities outside our company on multiple non-.NET platforms.

I need to generate a class at runtime similar to System.Resources where you can add a resource eg 'picture.bmp' and it immediatelly is accessible as 'System.Resources.picture.bmp'. I presume I need to generate XLM or/and XLSD at design time and then deserialise at runtime but I cant find a reference on how to do this. Specially without knowing the generic class in advance (as 'System.Resources' doesnt know all the resources in advance).

We have two systems, one is created in VB.Net 2003 and the other is created in VB6. Both systems are client/server desktop application system. There is a requirement that we need to send and response data to each systems. The data will come as result of process of each system and then transfer it to the other system. These is formatted in a message format. Is it likely to become socket programming? how can I send and response data between servers?

My software handles multiple operations on files, and I have now finished writing the related functions, using the System.IO classes. I now need to add support for network drives. Using a mapping works very well (although Directory.GetFiles is a bit low, and I don't know why), but I'd now like to be able to deal directly with paths such as \192.168.0.10Shared FolderMyDrive. Is there any way to handle this type of paths other than mounting the drive to an available drive letter, using the newly generated path, and then unmounting?
