Permissions System - How To Get Access Of Internal GUID

Aug 6, 2011

I am building a permissions system in vb.net against the normal Windows Server file system. Have not decided on the best method, but is there a way to get access to some kind of internal GUID that Windows might store for a folder. If I just store the path for security, then it quickly becomes very hard to update a database storing path information to get security information. If a folder had some kind of internal GUID structure that would be great. Is this available?

LINQ To SQL: Unable To Cast Object Of Type 'System.Guid' To Type 'System.String'

Nov 15, 2011

I am getting a really bizarre error and it makes no sense at all.Basically I have a user entity which has a Password property. This property is of Type Binary, the server data type being Binary(512).I am reading this value in and converting it to a byte array. However whenever I run my code I am getting a completely unrelated error of Unable to cast object of type 'System.Guid' to type 'System.String'.This strikes me as very odd since I am not using a property or variable of type string or GUID anywhere in this procedure where it falls over.

The code is below:

Public Shared Function ValidateUser(ByVal username As String, ByVal password As String) As UserValidationMessage
Using db As New EntityMapDataContext
Dim u = From user In db.Users
Where user.Username = username

Sql - Passing A List Of System.guid As Params To As SQL2008 Sproc?

Sep 24, 2009

I would like to pull a set of records in a SQL sproc by passing in a list of system.guid and also by passing in a list of integer keys.I can put the guids ihto a string, of course, but the question is - how do I quote the test values so they are recognized as UIDs by SQLIn essence I was to DECLARE @pklist AS VARCHAR(1000)-- This would look like "'45F4AE2A-D27C-D711-83FD-0008C7FA9683','EC824D02-D37C-D711-83FD-0008C7FA9683','BA8E4D02-D37C-D711-83FD-0008C7FA9683'" coming out of the execsql from vb .net - I think :-) but it seems it needs to look likeSET @pklist = '45F4AE2A-D27C-D711-83FD-0008C7FA9683,EC824D02-D37C-D711-83FD-0008C7FA9683,BA8E4D02-D37C-D711-83FD-0008C7FA9683'SELECT * from dbo.members WHERE members.cpk IN (@pklist)This only returns the record matching the first UID in the string. Is there something I can wrap a t-sql VARCHAR string with so each guid will be seen distinctly?In trying to do this with a list of integer keys, the problem is the value is seen as part of a string and is not cast to an integerIt would seem creating a table from a parsed version of the string passed in and then doing a JOIN would accomplish what I need as well, but struggling with the T-SQL syntax for that.

Use The Internal System Speaker To Generate Sound?

Jun 12, 2011

I know it is possible to use the internal system speaker to generate sound.

EG
System.Console.Beep(500, 500)
'Beep(FREQUENCY,DURATION)

However i was wondering if anyone knows if it is possible and how to go about using said system speaker to speak - MESSAGE YOU ARE NOT AUTHORISED - for example

I am creating an app that allows admin access via a usb key (this is working fine) and i want their system to sound an alarm with a warning message should they try to force thier way into the admin section without the admin usb key.

C# - Why Are Many Designer Classes In System.Design Marked As Internal

Aug 28, 2009

I have been developing some components for our products at work, and one of them is based off the flow layout panel.What i would like to do is provide a custom designer for it, but without loosing the features provided by it's default designer (System.Windows.Forms.Design.FlowLayoutPanelDesigner) which is marked as internal.Using Reflector i thought i would just implement it again myself, seeing as it inherits from 'FlowPanelDesigner and that from PanelDesigner` all of which are internal.

Why would these classes be specifically marked as internal? Is it due to them being specifically for Visual Studio use, and thus not 'framework' code?Also, is there an easier option that re-implementing all the functionality?

Implementing The Access Permissions?

Dec 29, 2009

I am exploring ways of implementing access control permissions in a VB 2008 Windows Application.This is an application for a non-profit where users would log in and depending on their group membership (ie. warehouse, accounting, etc.) some forms would be available while others are not. (eg Warehouse cannot view donor info) Additionally some groups can view information but not alter (add, delete, edit) information.groups who are denied permissions would not be able to open certain windows forms. The question is what is an efficient method of creating this permission structure and how would it be implemented in the application?

File Permissions - Can't Access Documents Folder From .net In Windows 7?

Jan 17, 2011

I've been struggling with this problem in VB.net for a while: whenever I try to access the My Documents, My video's or simular in Windows 7, I get an access denied error. The program that uses this code is a file-backup application, so it's important it can access everything. The app has admin rights, using this line:requestedExecutionLevel level="requireAdministrator" uiAccess="false" />

To confirm, I also get a nice UAC popup when starting.The app accesses the files twice. Once to calculate the file size, and once to actually copy the files. Here is the file-size calculation code (that I found online:) Function GetFolderSize(ByVal DirPath As String, ByVal includeSubFolders As Boolean) As Long

VS Was Unable To Determine Code Access Security (CAS) Permissions

May 2, 2009

This program is a small ADOX database with a single data entry Form. Originally written in VB 2005, it was copied into the VB 2008 Project folder. Opening the file in the IDE, it went through the Conversion process, nevertheless, because of the following error detailed below, the program will not accept any changes.

Error List: Warning 1 Unable to find manifest signing certificate in the certificate store. AppointmentsMissed (<the project's name) Under Security in the project's Properties Window these suggestions are made: Visual Studio was unable to determine the Code Access Security (CAS) permissions that are applicable to your project. The most likely cause is that your project references a strongly-named assembly that defines custom permissions, but that is not properly installed in the global assembly cache (GAC).

To correct this, try the following: 1. Ensure that any custom permissions defining assemblies referenced by your project have been properly installed to the GAC. If any of these assemblies have been rebuilt or have had their version numbers modified, you must install the new assemblies in the GAC. 2. Restart Visual Studio.

VB Compiler Is Unable To Recover From The Error: System Error &Hc0000005& (VB Internal Compiler Error)

Jul 1, 2011

This error first appear to occur randomly. Steps to recreate:Open Visual Studio and load a solution (some files automatically opened) - this is when the problem occurs Close all open files Restart visual studio and load solution (no issues)Open Exactly the same files again, restart visual studio and load solution so files open automatically (problem occurs!)

However, when trying to narrow it down to a single file (that is automatically opened when the solution is loaded), I couldn't reproduce the problem. Now with all the files open again the problem doesn't occur!!! So it looks like it is fixed - though this happened before and eventually the issue came back.

I think it is to do with one of the user controls with DevExpress controls on it - when the error occurs, the designer displays the error. Though I can't reproduce it at the moment to confirm that.

.NET Native GUID Conversion

Nov 9, 2011

I have an external database that is feeding information to me. One saves their data as native GUID format and my other data source supplies standard .NET GUID format string. Is there a tidy way to convert from Native GUID to GUID Structure? Also is there any validation bit to determine if a provided value is a Native GUID or not? I can't seem to find any if there is one. The difference is as follows:

typedef struct _GUID
{
DWORD Data1;
WORD Data2;
WORD Data3;
BYTE Data4[8];
} GUID;

Data1, Data2 and Data3 get their byte order reversed but Data4 remains the same, see [url] for more info.
