.Net Classes That Return System Information
Feb 29, 2012
I remember seeing somewhere on the net that there are classes in .Net that will return information about your computer. I know that System.Environment returns some of this information like MachineName and some other stuff. Are there other classes that will return information such as hard drive size, free and used space, total memory, used memory?

I need to provide a DLL that is consumed by a VBA app (Access 2003, late binding) and returns stuff that is retrieved from various WebServices. These WebServices publish methods that not only return a single object, but also arrays of them.
From the Access-app's point of view, it's no problem to consume i.e. an array of strings. However, there's also methods that return an array of a (proprietary) class. I can't seem to be able to consume such an array from VBA.[code]....

I have a serializable Message class that has a Data As Object property that I'm using as a generic holder for information to be sent via a system that uses a combination of push technology and/or IPC to communicate with any other programs that are interested in the information. This allows the communication piece to be agnostic of the information it transmits.
I was serializing this Data As Object as a Byte[], since I was worried about how an Object being serialized and transmitted across the network would behave on the other side. However, when deserializing I get errors about being unable to find the assembly for the types stored within my Data As Object property, because I'm deserializing in the assembly that contains the Message class... not the assembly that contains the type that Data As Object originally was.I was wondering if I'd lose the type information and be unable to cast it back to the type I want at the other end. Perhaps it's not possible to pass a type as an Object via another assembly without it knowing about my type?

I have two Parser classes that inherit from a base class, BaseParser. I want to use either class as a parameter in another Monitor class. The Parser classes, CS600 and TCH600, both have two properties, RawDataList and SummaryDataList. The CS600 class's RawDataList returns a List(of CS600Data); the TCH600 RawDataList returns a List(of TCH600Data). The SummaryDataList returns similar classes in each Parser class. CS600Data and TCH600Data derive from a base class, BaseData.BaseParser also has RawDataList (List(of BaseData)) and SummaryDataList (List(of BaseSummaryData))The Monitor class has a private field, _thisParser which can be either of the two concrete Parsers above. I want to be able to call and use RawDataList and SummaryDataList of _thisParser within Monitor class, but when I construct the concrete Parser classes, Visual Studio notes that the RawDataList property of CS600 cannot override the RawDataList property of the BaseParser because they differ in their return types.
I thought that since CS600Data derived from BaseData (but also adds some new properties of its own) that I could use CS600Data wherever I use BaseData. What am I misunderstanding? How can I correctly construct these classes?
Public MustInherit Class BaseParser
Protected _rawDataList As List(Of RawGasData.BaseData)
Public MustOverride ReadOnly Property RawDataList() As List(Of RawGasData.BaseData)

We are developing a webservice for a client. We are not supose to throw SoapExceptions, so instead, we catch every exception server side, and return a custom Exception class.
Public Class Order
...
End Class
[Code]....
The problem now is, that since my webmethod is returning the type [Object]. The wdsl that is generated does not contain the order, or the exception.
I can change the [Object] to [Order] Or [MyException], but only one of them is generated in the wsdl.
I want both the MyException type and the Order type in my wsdl, but i just cant get it working.

I have a windows service written in .NET 2.0 that will run every 5 minutes and executes bunch oracle SQL/PLSQL scripts based on time/validation, it throws the above said error some times against some SQLs, the same SQLs run fine at later point without any error, I have no idea what is going on with the app. I am not sure if this has any thing to do with oracle connection pool as I am properly closing the connections after every SQL execution.
Exception:
System.Exception: Unexpected return code: 1 at System.Data.OracleClient.DBObjectPool.GetObject(Object owningObject, Boolean& isInTransaction) at System.Data.OracleClient.OracleConnectionPoolManager.GetPooledConnection(String encryptedConnectionString,

This is annoying. I'm trying to put a wrapper around some functionality that uses a web service to return some information. The intention is to wrap all of that communication into a dll such that the user can simply call functions from the dll to get back information, without needing to care about the service. As far as I can tell, that isn't possible, because the service information, as far as bindings and endpoints, HAS to exist in the app.config of the program that references the dll. That means that anybody using this dll won't just be able to add a reference to it and use it, like they would with any other kind of dll, they must also edit their app.config to add in a bunch of information. That's a simple copy and paste job, but it's incredibly unfriendly, and exposes some of the internal workings of the dll to casual inspection.

Since most of the projects I work on are exclusively SQL Server 2005/2008 database driver, I was wondering about the implications of using System.Data.SqlTypes classes as data types in my VB.Net Framework 4.0 code. For example currently I define integer variables as Dim X as Integer.Using System.Data.SqlType classes I would define my intege variables as.Dim X as System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlInt32 implications for performance, serialization and databinding. One difference would be that all variables would default to Null.

I need to generate a class at runtime similar to System.Resources where you can add a resource eg 'picture.bmp' and it immediatelly is accessible as 'System.Resources.picture.bmp'. I presume I need to generate XLM or/and XLSD at design time and then deserialise at runtime but I cant find a reference on how to do this. Specially without knowing the generic class in advance (as 'System.Resources' doesnt know all the resources in advance).

I have been developing some components for our products at work, and one of them is based off the flow layout panel. What i would like to do is provide a custom designer for it, but without loosing the features provided by it's default designer (System.Windows.Forms.Design.FlowLayoutPanelDesigner) which is marked as internal.Using Reflector i thought i would just implement it again myself, seeing as it inherits from 'FlowPanelDesigner and that from PanelDesigner` all of which are internal.
Why would these classes be specifically marked as internal? Is it due to them being specifically for Visual Studio use, and thus not 'framework' code? Also, is there an easier option that re-implementing all the functionality?

My software handles multiple operations on files, and I have now finished writing the related functions, using the System.IO classes. I now need to add support for network drives. Using a mapping works very well (although Directory.GetFiles is a bit low, and I don't know why), but I'd now like to be able to deal directly with paths such as \192.168.0.10Shared FolderMyDrive. Is there any way to handle this type of paths other than mounting the drive to an available drive letter, using the newly generated path, and then unmounting?

Exists a good tutorial or example that shows how to use these classes from namespace System.Drawing.Imaging.
My idea is, to produce Bitmaps and to compress them. I don't know if for my case IO Streaming is important because I don't want to save the bitmap on my hard disk.

I would like to utilize classes that inherit the System.Data name space.Specifically, I would like to have classes CarColumn, CarTable, and CarSet derived from DataColumn, DataTable, and Dataset respectively.I would like to be able to add additional properities to each class. As an example this is how I would like to reference items within the classes:
CarSet.CarTable(0).Columns(0).foo
CarSet.CarTable(0).bar
I know that VB.Net is not capable of Multi-Inheritance.

However, when I then debug or compile the project, I get a message such

I've been assigned to do some report analysis in a management information system. My question is, do you think it's a efficient way to gather datas from SQL, with the use of basic syntax and have them manipulated through my code in VB.NET?(I'm more skilled with this kind of execution, but it takes a lot of data calling from the database)Or should I just do the advance way of inner jointing or more likely a stored procedure?
