C# - Load A Dictionary Into A Console Application From An App.config?

Aug 18, 2010

I want to load a dictionary at startup in my console app from my app.config. I know that I could use an xml library or linq to XML to load it to parse and traverse it. My question is there a BUILT IN way of doing it. Isn't there some way to add an application configuration section into the app.config and then have it loaded automagically using ConfigurationManager class in the System.Configuration namespace?

.net - Read <connectionstring> Of Web.config From A Console Application?

Dec 20, 2011

I have VB.net console application. I would like to read the (ConnectionString) from a web.config.

Web.config is located at a particular path in my virtual PC, say "C:/mywebConfig"

<add name="MY_DB" connectionString="Data Source=DATASOURCE;Initial Catalog=DB;Persist

Security Info=False; User ID=***;Password=****;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

My code:

Dim connString As String = String.Empty
connString = ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings("MY_DB").ConnectionString

Whenever I try to access it, i get the error not set to an instance of an object or something like that :)

I tried to add the web.config in my Project, but still get the error.

Check For DLL On Console Application Load?

Aug 26, 2009

I have a simple console application which consists of a single executable and a DLL file. My project has a reference to the DLL. My question is how do I ensure the DLL is present in the same directory and prevent the console app from crashing? Although in reality the two files will probably never be separated, I want to make sure someone can diagnose the error without me there.

At first I tried adding File.Exists(PathToDLL) at the beginning of Sub Main(). If the file wasn't found, I was going to display a message and quit the application. But apparently if the DLL is referenced at any point in the code, a System.IO.FileNotFoundException is thrown regardless if the line is executed.

Is there some way to handle this in the executable itself without creating another executable to load that one?

Load App.Config At Runtime?

Jan 17, 2012

I am creating a test project using IBM's Rational Functional Tester(RFT) tool(we are using the VB version of it and it only supports till .net 3.5).In this project I am making all database queries using the entity framework. The problem is entity framework retrieves "Metadata", "Connection String" etc from the App.Config file, and RFT won't let me add a App.Config to the project(I guess it is designed that way -- I googled adding an App.Config file to an rft project and came up with nothing), and the Entity Framework requires you to have the app.config file at the entry point.I was building the string to pass to entity framework in code, but my boss really does not like that. So looking at my options I think any of the below 2 solutions should suffice

Is their any way to load an App.Config during run-time. Is their any way to add an App.Config to an RFT project(should really be my first question).

Console Application Without Showing Console

Aug 8, 2010

I am currently working on an application, where I am using a console application, that will set up the application prior to the main form is run. This is no problem I've got that all working perfectly, the only problem I have is that the console is showing while the application is running, I was wondering whether anyone knows any way in which I would be able to hide the console before it gets shown to the user.

Showing Console In Console Application?

Dec 15, 2011

How do I get the console from closing immediatley upon opening in a Console Application program? I have all of the code written but when I run the program it pops up the console window and then immediatley exits so I am unable to read what is in the window to see if my program is operating correctly. This is the first time I've ever used a console window so I don't know where in the code I would need to put "whatever it is" I might need to put to keep the window open until closed by the user.

VS 2010 Console Application Without A Console?

Aug 23, 2009

It sounds confusing but it's not really. What I need is basically a way to emulate the console style text, without using a console. What I'm really doing is trying to do a matrix effect on my form background, by drawing symbols and moving them, alternating their colors (see this video for what I mean).

Is there a way to do this effectively with a timer and a draw event, with the timer calling the draw event and changing the intervals?

VS 2008 Load Config / Use Custom Attributes

Jun 5, 2009

I have some custom user controls (asp.net) that is loaded via a configuration file this works great..

Problem - Some of these user controls I made you set some parameters.

Example - oUCtrl = page.LoadControl("UserControls/" & oCtrlNode.Attributes("name").Value & ".ascx")

This loads the control.. now that node has more attributes.. example url="www.google.com" in the config file

<control name="RSSFeed" url="www.google.com"> To set the url on the control it would be oUCtrl.url = "www.google.com"

is there a way to enumerate the properties of a user control or a way to use something to eval a string like eval("oUctrl." & currentAttributeName & "=" currentAttributeValue)

Not sure the best way.. i would assume the best way would enumerate the public properties of the user control and compare against it.

Way To Use A Dictionary Or Xml In The Application Settings?

Apr 18, 2010

I have to store a complex type in the application settings. I thought that storing it as XML would work best.he problem is I don't know how store XML. I prefer to store it as a managed XML rather than using just a string of raw XML having to parse it on each access. I managed to set the Type column of the setting to XDocument, but I was unable to set its valueIs there a way to use XDocument or XML in application settings?UpdateI found a way, simply by editing the .settings file with the xml editor.I changed it to a custom serializable dictionary, but I get the following error when I try to access the setting-property (I set it to a serialized representation of the default value).

Use Linq ToDictionary To Return A Dictionary With Multiple Values In The Dictionary Items?

Jan 25, 2010

I want to group items from a linq query under a header, so that for each header I have a list of objects that match the header title. I assumed the solution would be to use ToDictionary to convert the objects, but this allows only one object per "group" (or dictionary key). I assumed I could create the dictionary of type (String, List Of()), but I can't figure out how to write it. As an example I have written a simplified version below.

Asp.net - Use A Dictionary-like Collection As An Application Settings Object?

Jun 8, 2009

I'd like to store a set of key/value pairs in the application settings of my ASP.NET web app, but I'm not finding a straightforward way to do that. For example, these two questions tell me that StringDictionary etc. won't serialize to XML and suggest that I'll have to roll my own implementation. But it seems like this should be easier to do; after all, web.config is XML and < applicationSettings> is essentially a collection of key/value pairs, so it feels like I'm missing something obvious. Given my specific case below, do I really have to roll my own serialization, or is there an easier workaround?

The web app in question is a basic contact form that sends email to different recipients based on the value of a parameter; e.g. [URL]...The goal is to be able add or remove recipients (or change their addresses) by editing the web.config file so that I don't have to recompile and can easily maintain different configurations in test and production environments. For example:

// I can use something like this for the sender address SmtpMsg.From = New MailAddress(My.Settings.EmailSender)

// And then just edit this part of web.config to use different addresses in different environments.
<setting name="EmailSender" serializeAs="String"> <value>webcontact@exampledomain.com</value>

Detect If The Application Is A Console Or WinForms Application?

Sep 24, 2010

detect whether the current application is a console or a winforms application. The reason that I want to do this is that I am developing a library with a global error handler in it and I need to know what type of application it is in order to be able to subscribe to the appropriate exception event.Obviously I could get the user to pass in a parameter specifying what type of application it is, but I would rather deal with that automatically so its all encapsulated from the user of the class.

Windows Application Versus Console Application?

Nov 24, 2010

We currently have +- 20 different console application developed in VS2008 and running at different scheduled intervals, all controlled by Windows schedular. The problem we have come accross is that it is becoming increasingly difficult to manage and maintain these console apps. In some instances a console app will just fail or never run to start with and this creates a lot of problems. In many cases one console app is dependant on another and if 1st one fails well...you see where this is going.

I am looking for a new solution that will help us to trace, debug and manage these console apps better. We are preferably looking for a gui front end, maybe windows app where we can set the intervals for them to sun and view some error reports if they did not run.We are port all the code for the console apps to which ever new appliocation we develop.

C# - When Does Web.config Get Brought Into The Application

Nov 25, 2009

Can values from web.config be read completely at runtime or does the application make a copy of the current web.config upon initialization.

Essentially, I'm wandering if I make a change to web.config if it will take effect on the users next postback or if they would need to initialize an entirely new page load. In particular, I'm interested in sections of the web.config like sesssionState and when a change to timeout would take effect.
