Call A Variable Without Addressing It Directly?

Jul 10, 2011

So I am having an issue where I want to call a variable without addressing it directly and I get an error for it:

Conversion from string "player1BuzzLock" to type 'Boolean' is not valid.

This is technically correct but why would it fail?

Dim player1BuzzLock As Boolean = False
Dim PlayerNum as Integer = 1
'...
Dim playerBuzzLock As Boolean = CType("player" & PlayerNum.ToString & "BuzzLock", Boolean)

Addressing Variable Inside A Variable

Feb 19, 2010

I am sure this has had to have been answered somewhere but after looking on the web I cant find anything addressing variables in variables. For instance say I have var1, var2, var3, var4 decalred. How can I create a loop assignment? Something like var & i = "variable 1". So instead of "var1" I have the numeric piece be a variable.

Call Module Functions Directly In .NET?

Apr 29, 2010

I have a Util module in my VB.NET program that has project-wide methods such as logging and property parsing. The general practice where I work seems to be to call these methods directly without prefixing them with Util. When I was new to VB, it took me a while to figure out where these methods/functions were coming from. As I use my own Util methods now, I can't help thinking that it's a lot clearer and more understandable to add Util. before each method call (you know immediately that it's user-defined but not within the current class, and where to find it), and is hardly even longer. What's the general practice when calling procedures/functions of VB modules? Should we prefix them with the module name or not?

Directly Set The Bits Of A Single Variable?

I'm a newbie in VB.NET, I am trying to directly set the bits of a single variable. For example - dim afloat as single afloat = &h0000000c afloat will then be set to to '12'. However, I wish to actually set the bits of afloat to &h0000000c, which will give a different value.

Threaded Function Call Slower Than Calling Function Directly?

Sep 14, 2010

I have a function where I am performing a lot number of database operations inside a Sub. The operation when called directly like:ExecProcess()

takes about 11 seconds to run.However, if I create a Delegate, and call the sub using BeginInvoke(), the very same process takes over 40 seconds to execute.Here's the threaded code:

Protected del As ProcessDelegate
Protected Delegate Sub ProcessDelegate()
del = New ProcessDelegate(AddressOf SELocal.ExecJob)
Dim cb As New AsyncCallback(AddressOf Me.ExecJobComplete)
del.BeginInvoke(cb, del)

Anyone know what may cause a function to take longer inside a new thread, rather than calling directly?

VS 2008 Use The Value Of One Variable To Call Another Variable Of The Same Name?

Feb 7, 2011

I am trying to use the value of one variable to call another variable of the same name.I have 2 variable one called VAR1 and VAR2.

The variable VAR1 has a value of "VAR2"
The variable VAR2 has a value of "HELP"

I want to be able to get the value VAR2 from the variable VAR1 I have defined the value of VAR2 early in the code and now I want to call that value by using the value of VAR1.The reason I am doing it this way as I have a list of 50 variables that are pulled from one system. Each of these variables have the same name as the columns of a spreadsheet. The total number of Variable stay the same but the total column headers may vary each time. I need to loop through each of the column headers match them with the variable names and add the data to the spreadsheet.

VAR1 = "VAR2"
VAR2 = "HELP"
i =1

[code]....

This is the tricky bit...if the value of the cell(1,i) = "VAR2" How do I get it to display the value of the variable of the same name In this case how will I get it to display "HELP" when I only have from the VAR1 value "VAR2" I know my code will bring back the value as a string but I want it to bring back that string as a variable and display the value of that variable?

VS 2008 Call .exe From VBA Using A Variable

Apr 7, 2010

I have created a project using VB.Net(VS2008) and created the exe file. I have another project in VBA (Excel 2003). The project basically IC-Testing based. So according to the device type the Excel workbook name varies. For example I have AAAA.xls, BBBB.xls, CCCC.xls. When I open AAAA.xls, I want to call the .exe (which is developed in VB.Net) with the variable "AAAA". i.e when the exe program runs, it knows which Excel is opened or from which Excel the .exe is called. now I am using Shell retval=Shell("d:Monitor.exe",1). Using this the exe is called and running fine. But the Monitor.exe doesn't know which Excel called it, whether it is AAAA.xls, BBBB.xls or CCCC.xls.

Addressing And Reading A Control On A Form From A Module

I simply cannot refer to a control on a form from module code as in all other versions of VB. Here is the code that I mean:[code]The fact that this cannot seemingly be done without getting into looping through an array of controls, assigning the control to a general control variable etc. and much more guff is puzzling and is in my opinion an added complexity to Visual Basic. There must be a simple way to do this - I just want to refer to the value in a control, on a form, from a module.

Background Worker - Addressing Richard Cloete?

Sep 25, 2010

recent thread, there was a passing discussion regarding running Rick's program in a background worker in order to keep the user interface "alive". The thread was actually about memory usage, so I decided to put this together instead.First, I'm sure no expert at any of this, so do take all of this "as is" and with a healthy dose of skepticismThebackground worker is a fairly easy way to let your program run time-consuming or complex operations on another thread so that your main thread (your user interface) stays active. This can be done other ways of course, but the BGW has many things builtinto it that makes it ideal to use for just this sort of thing.

One caveat to keep in mind is this: You cannot directly "talk" from the BGW to your main thread or you'll get a cross thread violation exception. As an example, you cannot set a label's text value (on the form, thus on your main thread) from the BGW, butyou can modify class-level variables then in the BGW's Progress Changed event, it will update that text based on the variable.In this example I'm doing this two ways: The first is a calculation of the percentage done (so that I can display it textually and in the progress bar), and the other is text indicating the status.
