Given vba's fairly lamentable image manipulation abilities, I'm considering going down the VB.NET form route. My hope would be to allow some degree of interactive manipulation and then either pass the image back to vba or save it and load it in vba.I'm happy to investigate the latter part of it at length under my own steam - however, I'm not versed enough in VB.NET forms to know if calling them from (in this case) Access VBA is a practical or doable - and whether it's possible to pass data back and forth.

We need to perform office automation (opening docx,doc,wrd,wpd files and saving them as .htm files) through Windows service or Web service but Microsoft does not support Microsoft Office automation in server side code.[URL]..We have understood that, "Word automation Services" feature of SharePoint server can be used to achieve this. But we are not in a position to acquire SharePoint server license.
Is there any other way to perform office automation through Windows Service or Web Service?

I am not an expert programmer and am just getting familiar with .NET office automation. I have two questions:
1. For me to create word documents from my code on a server, does word have to be installed on the server? My test server does not have word installed. Is there a way to have the code open word on the user's machine in this case?
2. I am trying out some code for creating word documents. It works fine on my machine. However, when I try to run it on server it gives me an error.. "Cannot create ActiveX component." Is this a permissions issue or related to the fact that the server does not have word installed?

I would like each entry of data to have a button associated with it that could call a server function to submit data to a database. I currently have the button implemented, but no idea how to go about calling a function that would be able to detect what button was clicked.
My Problem: I am using Matlab COM Automation Server to call and execute matlab .m files from a VB.Net plugin for a CAD program called Rhino 3D. The code works flawlessly when set up as a simple Windows Application in Visual Studio, but when I insert it (and make the requisite reference) into my .Net plugin and test it in the CAD program I get the following error: "Could not load file or assembly 'Interop.MLApp, Version 1.0.0.0, culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. the system cannot find the file specified."
What I've Tried: I am baffled as to why this occurs, but I was able to contact the CAD program's technical support staff and they suggested that it has something to do with their DotNet SDK having trouble with references that are located far outside the CAD program directory. They didn't have any solutions so I tried playing around with copylocal and this made no difference. I tried using other COM libraries and the Open Office automation server works fine, although uses url's instead of requiring a reference. I also tested Excel, which does require a reference, and it returned the error: "retrieving the COM class factory for component with CLSID {...} failed due to the following error: 80040154." This may or may not be related to the issue with the Matlab COM reference, but I thought was worthwhile to share. Perhaps is there another way to reference Interop.MLApp?

Now the only stipulation is that it can only happen if the button was clicked. Not just on any page load. Is there a simple way to do this?

I've got a conversion utility that basically copies values from one table to another. It's worked great for a while, but I've run into a strange issue with one customer. They got through 1.5 million records with the utility but now it is completely halted.When calling a stored procedure from VB.Net, it just hangs until the SqlCommand times out.Calling the same sproc from Management Studio executes instantly. My VB.Net code for the SqlCommand is below (insertConn is defined and opened earlier, dr is a SqlDataReader that has been populated in a previous step from completely different SqlConnection and SqlCommand instances):

I have binded data to the grid views at the page load only, since the data size is huge I cannot load the data binding at the page as the time taking to page load is huge. Ok basically what I need to do is the following:Read FirstExcelDoc (attached)For every row in that: Retrieve data from sql server db based on info in the Orange columns of FirstExcelDoc Let's say I retrieved data elements A, B, C, D, and E from sql server. Then I need to enter those same data elements A, B, and C in another excel spreadsheet (which has formulas etc) After inputing A, B, and C in that spreadsheet, read a couple of calculated fields and compare those results to data elements D and E retrieved originally from SQL Server DB. Finally, output the results in the Blue columns of the FirstExcelDoc spreadsheet for that row.Loop through and do the same thing for row 2 of the FirstExcelDoc and keep on until you see "END TEST" in the FirstExcelDoc.
I'm looking for a method of doing this efficiently. I have read several articles over the past few days as well as those from Mike R. but just need some direction to get started on this.To start of I'm looking for whether to read the entire FirstExcelDoc spreadsheet or just read the info for first policy number(2nd row) and process it and write out the blue column info for that row and then loop through and come back and read the second policy number (3rd row) etc... Please attach a code snippet for either way of reading the data.
I'm using excel via interop in application.Sometimes users kill application that created excel instance and that results in excel instance sitting in memory without any chance of disposing it.First I tried to tackle this using ROT(running object table) looks like not all instances of excel are registered there.Than I tried to somehow mark excel process after it is started via interop.[code]This works as long as excel is visible but in my case excel window is invisible.All I need is to somehow mark process that started via automation with the parent PID, so that later I can kill it if parent does not exist.

We have a vb program which is run on our server by scheduled task every day. The program opens about 30 excel files, refreshes the data connections, pivot tables and then saves the document in another location.
This may run fine for a couple days but sooner or later the process starts crashing, usually with this error: RPC_E_SERVERFAULT.
My question is, Is it expected that continually opening/closing/refreshing workbooks will inevitably cause the Excel object to crash at some point.
Does anyone have an example of how to register an automation server in the ROT (Runtime Object Table) using IRunningObjectTable.Register and how to revoke it using IRunningObjectTable.Revoke?
View 1 RepliesI have a VB.net application that gets data off our server with ODBC and populates and saves a Word Document. When I try to deploy it to another computer it will get the data just fine and populate the first document, but it will crash before saving it. I've installed the .net framework 4.0, Microsoft Data Access Components, and the Microsoft ODBC .net data Provider. The error code is 0xC0000005, which is from what I can see is called an "Access Violation Exception." It works fine on my computer.

View 1 RepliesWe have a VB 2005 program that reads data from a database and builds an Excel output file to be emailed. This works fine from my computer but when we put it on the server it fails on the Excel functionality.
The error is: Unhandled Exception: System.Runtim.InteropServices.COMException
Although Excel is not installed on the server we did also build a Setup program to install our program. It copies the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Excell.dll to the server folder with the exe.I thought the setup program should register the Excel DLL and the program should work even if the server does not have Office or Excel installed.
