In VB .NET, how can I have two copies of an executable communicate with each other over the internet? For example... similar to how and instant messenger might work.
View 1 RepliesI am developing a solution (VB.NET and Netframework 4.0) with a main executable and several DLLs (VB.NET and Netframework 4.0).The main program, among other things, shows datagriviews with lists of customers, providers, etc. and offers to add or edit them.If the user asks any of these actions in a customer's list, for example, I create a new customer class (which is contained in a DLL called customer) and pass to it the desired action.The DLL creates and shows the form to fill customer data and handles the edition/addition and the database update (add/update records).If a customer was actually added or its information changed, I should refresh the datagridview; if the addition/edition was cancelled there is no need to refresh it.I don't know how to code the DLL to notify the main executable that it needs to refresh the datagridview and I don't want to refresh it always, since there could be thousands of customers.
View 2 RepliesI have a loop that copies a file from the internet and writes it to disk (using a WebRequest and Response with a Stream and FileStream).Once in the loop if the internet connection breaks, the loop continues but without downloading any content (even if the internet connection is back up). I cant seem to catch this exception. If i check for a valid internet connection within the loop then the speed to download the file is way too slow

I'm able to communicate when the server and client programs are run on the same computer (by specifying IP as 127.0.0.1) or on different computer which are on LAN(192.168.x.x .... etc.). But the problem is that i'm not able to communicate through internet when i provide Internet IP Address (assigned by my ISP) of computer on which server program is running.

View 2 RepliesI have a program that outputs a file. I want the user to be able to just double-click the output file and launch the program, just like Word and Excel. In Word for instance, one doesn't necessarily have to open WORD then click on File--> Open and locate another Word doc. He can just go to the folder and open the Word doc. I want to implement the exact scenario in my program.
So far I have tried creating TextFile and added it to the Resources. On FormLoading, I simply I stream-read the Resouce file, but I can't write to the Resource on FormClosing, since the Resource is ReadOnly. Also, the Resource is built & compiled so I suppose you can't add anything to it at run time.How you lunch an output file without launching the Executable program that created it?
I have an executable that I was able to get working on all XP machines by registering all the .dll's associated with it.On Vista, however, I go through the exact same registration process but right when I open the executable it goes to a "WindowsApplication1 has stopped working" dialog. I registered the DLLs in the SysWOW64 folder. I also ran Dependency Walker which came up with IEFrame.dll as flagged, don't know if that is relevant though.

For example lets say I have a form with a textbox and in that textbox we pass an argument which is for example the serial of the product, then we have a button which once clicked will generate an executable on the fly which has also a textbox requiring that serial to run? That was only an example but the main thing is how to generate that exe on the fly.

we have our system running but our system needs to be modified because we did something wrong...we are doing an "Internet monitoring System" in our school library where the user can only access the internet 1hr a day, and he/she cannot use the internet within that day if he couldn't buy a time on a serve...every students should only have 20hrs time usage per semester...our problem is every day their 20hrs is being reduced in 1hr.. the rule is the time per semester which is 20hrs that is given to the students was reduced 1hr only if he uses the internet..but our system is reducing their 1hr every day.

View 3 RepliesI'm looking for a way to have my code build two copies of itself at once.The program has an "A" and a "B" configuration that need to be compiled as Prog-A.exe and Prog-B.exe every time the code is compiled. I can do this manually, but I assume there's some way to do it in code? What I'd like is to use conditional compilation to have the A configuration compile so that it runs a "setup as A"-type method on load, and the B likewise, and then have it compile both versions each time.

i have 2 listviews in which folder and files are loaded. i'm trying to make a function that, when "Copy" button is pressed copies files/ folders between listviews (between folders "ex: from "D:path" to "E:pathsubpath"). the codes of file copy and folder copy both work but not if add the file.exists / folder.exists lines. if i put a msgbox instead of the filecopy/ foldercopy it displays "file exists" or "folder exist" etc. .. but if add the file copy / folder copy line doens't do nothing.

I'm developing an application to monitor print queue and pause it to check some conditions, then resume or cancel print job. I can get total pages for printing document but can't get number of copies, how can i get this parameter.
Ex. If someone print 5 pages document for 2 copies, the total pages i got is 5 not 10 pages. (how can i get the real total pages)

I have an external harddrive and I usually backup my desktop with a cleanup folder which I usually move to the external harddrive.
The problem is: when I search for a file (i.e. example.mp3) I will find multiple copies which are taking up way too much space.
Is there an app or some code that can search for an extension (i.e. .mp3) and if it finds more than one copy of the same file, it can delete the extra file?
The reason I ask is: I have around 1300 different mp3s on my external harddrive and most of them are extra copies of the same mp3. When I search for the extension mp3 and I want to move all of the mp3s to a single folder I am prompted way too many times for overwriting or keeping the same mp3 file.
I need an app that can force the move without prompting and delete the extra copies; so, I am left with only one copy of each.
i.e.
mp3 files on external hard drive for backup:
song.mp3 > in one folder
song.mp3 > in another folder

We have a construction company and I am designing a program in Visual basics for it. This program is intended to be installed only on the computers in our office ( its not going to be distributed ). There is always a risk that one of our employees will take our software and distribute it . Is there anyway to prevent this. If not how can we make this as difficult as possible?
