Change Priority Class And Thread Priority Of A Process?
Mar 30, 2012How can I change the priority class and the thread priority of a process?

View 8 RepliesSo I'm making this program that set my game to low priority to prevent less lag, I got it to find if hl.exe is running and if it is, it'll set hl.exe to Low Priority.
I'm using this code but it seem to not work.
If Process.GetProcessesByName("hl").Length = 0 Then
TextBox1.Text = "Waiting for hl.exe"
Else
[CODE].......................
How can i change a process using only 1 core instead of 2 cores? Also, how can I set different prioritys to each process? As it does not save the settings which i put to each process in taskmanager on restart, i decided to make a program so i could simply click a button so it would change the settings for each process i want. For example:With a simple button click it changes msnmsgr.exe priority to low and makes it use only the 1st core.
View 2 RepliesWhy this: System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.Priority = System.Threading.ThreadPriority.Highest doesn't work? I ran my app and checked it using the task manager process tab. It was checked as normal.
View 8 RepliesI have a small problem with process priorities (Win Server 2003 Standard, 8 Core, 16GB RAM). My VB.NET 2005 program starts a process like this:
Dim WithEvents proc As New Process
Sub Main()
proc.StartInfo.FileName = "blastx.exe"[code].....
In this case, blastx.exe runs on 4 cores.I would expect that my started process is idle and has 0% CPU usage while the system is under full load (I simulate this with prime95, 8 worker threads) and only runs if there are free resources. But it generates 25% cpu load and prime95 only 75% instead of expected 0%/100%. In the task manager, I can see that my process has the lowest priority and prime95 has the normal priority.
I want to change a program's priority (Not my own) or start it in a different priority. I have a small peice of code and have no idea where to go from there. Here's the small peice of code that I have:
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(C:\Srcds)
That's not the exact directory, if it matters.
I would like to know how i can make my program execute just as the computer switches on.I tried putting the program in the startup folder but it doesn't execute right as the desktop is loaded and takes about 10 secs to execute. Is there a priority option or something that i am unaware of?
View 5 RepliesWe have an assignment at school to make a programm with visual basic that helps the user choose a computer, better give him a choice of 3 PCs.the following code is how far we are with comparing but we are knew to VB so...
Private Sub Button3_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button3.Click
Dim num1, num2, num3, num4, num5 As String
Dim i, j, x As Integer
Dim help(5, 13) As String

sol() is a global variable that contains the characteristics of our 14 computers (in our own format, lol) which we then compare to the users input (via combobox). With "ordi" we "format" the choise of the user to match our format. then the grand comparing begins... the first for-loop should select the computers which fit best but we don't know how to "skip" that computer if the comparison doesn't fit (after all, we still want to use that computer for a second or third choise!). After that the next for-loop should pick the best fitting computer as no.1 (going from top priority down).
I've got my program running, but when I start it up on Vista, it does so quite slow. I need it to start up faster, I was fiddling around in task manager to check it was actually started and just taking a while, and I noticed it had the priority "BelowNormal", which I'd like to change.
How can I do this from the registry? I've got it starting up, but how do I add a parameter for the process to be started with a higher priority (I.E, normal, abovenormal, high, realtime, etc., I need to test which is suitable).

I have a user control as Binding Navigator control and it has navigation buttons, one of them is Cannel.I put the control in the form every thing works fine, but the problem is the priority of the sequence that the code performs for example:In the Cancel Click event there are some code inside the control it self, and in the form which hold the control I also put some code it goes fine but it first perform the code in the form and then it perform the code in the control. My question is there a way to tell the click event to perform the code inside the control first and then the code inside the holding form, (priority sequence)
I'm planning my road in VB training on my own at home using various books and online resources, like MSDN and book publisher support sites, etc. My initial goal is to become familiar w/the VB 2008 language but then to build upon that w/other skills like perhaps, ASP. Net, ADO .Net and so on. Maybe concentrate on WPF/XAML? My question is, where do I go next after initially learning the VB 2008 language? Not only that, what should my learning "list" look like, assuming it a good idea to "add" to the lot w/other VB skills? What's a "real world" learning plan look like in VB? Which should I consider to be "priority" core VB skills to learn after initially learning the VB language? What is a realistic VB skill portfolio look like?

IF I am creating the form in VB.net and adding listeners to the C#.Net library object, the handlers are called after some time. Do we have any priority to be set the event handlers

View 6 RepliesI need some help to understand my options to get this working. I try to update a textbox control by a property-changed event from a class variable. I've digged around for a day and have a vague understanding that this can be solved in three ways:
1. Using some "if InvokeRequired", "Invoke" code in the handler method
2. By programming a special delegate class for this variable
3. By using a databinding directly linking the control (textbox) to the class event
Now.. Are these options correct? And would it be possible to get some help to show these three solutions in actual code (relevant to mine)? I can't seem to manage to sort all the information to a working code. Also, what are the pros and cons of the different solutions?
As my code stands now, it's obviously none of the above, as it gives a cross-thread error, as indicated.

A BackgroundWorker thread can pass data to the primary thread. It does it via the RunWorkerCompleted and ProgressChanged events, which I believe run in the primary thread. I would like to encapsulate the BackgroundWorker control in a class so that I can instantiate it more than once. But I don't know how the BGW can then communicate with the primary thread. If the BGW control is within a class, it does not have access to the properties outside the class. In that case, how can the BGW pass data to the thread that instantiated it?

I am using vb.net 2005In my form load procedure I am starting a background thread. The thread is declared as public.
Public

And started in form_load

how do I force a particular set of vb.net codes to run in a new thread or process.? Edit 1: I am trying TTS in vb.net but whenever click the play button , The whole program freezes and I cannot do anything else until the speech is over
View 3 RepliesI' ve got a short question concerning BackgroundWorker. Is it possible to have the main code for the BGW in one class and the long process for the BGW (DoWork) in another class or module?
I couldn't find anything helpful on the internet. Here is my code - DoWork in a separate class doesn't work:

At the moment, I am writing a class that deals with starting an application in a thread, as well as being able to monitor the closure of the thread and process, and the creation of the thread and process through events. I have absoloutly no problems with monitering the creation of the thread and its internal process within the subs that create them. I placed notifications within the "myprocess_Exited",(for the process closure) and "myprocess_Disposed"(for the thread closure) events.
The problem comes when I terminate the outside application manually; these events do not appear to fire when the application is closed by the user, rather than by code.I thought, since the application closes with an error code when it is terminated in such a way, that it raises the "myprocess_ErrorDataRecieved" event. But this doesn't appear to happen either. Here is some of the code from that class:
'Some of the decleratoins
Event ProcessStarted(ByVal Process As Process)
Event ThreadStarted(ByVal Thread As System.Threading.Thread)
[code]....
The code has gone bad. It is in debug mode and jumping around everywhere.
Error = "The process or thread has changed since last step."
Here is the code. I just create the file "start.csv" to initialize the shell command. This is very unstable for some reason. When I run line by line in debug mode it starts jumping around irrationally. It gives me versions of the above error.
Option Strict On
Option Explicit On
Imports System.IO
Module Module1
Public WithEvents Tmr As New Timers.Timer
[Code] .....
Here's the problem I am trying to solve. My program can export a file as a pdf. and other formats. I can open the file using process.start. My file doesnt have a good name so I am using a GUID as a name.

Basically, I am just trying to close the thread/process after it's done.
Private psi As ProcessStartInfo
Private cmd As Process
Public Delegate Sub InvokeWithString(ByVal text As String)
Private Sub Button1_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button1.Click
Dim psi As New ProcessStartInfo("m7.bat")
[Code] .....
I am trying to close the thread so once it's done, it closed for good and my form is closed as well. I tried Me.Close() which results in: "Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Form1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on." Error.
Me.Invoke(New InvokeWithString(AddressOf CloseME), e) - Results in parameter mismatch error.
However, things like Msgbox("Done") works perfectly.
I would like to implement a mulithtreaded crawler using the single thread crawler code I have now. Basically I read the urls from a text file, take each one and crawl and parse it. I know how thread basics of creating a thread and assigning a process to it but not too sure how to implement in the following way:
I need at least 3 threads and need to assign a url to each thread from a list of urls, and then each needs to go and fetch it and parse it before adding contents to a database. [Code] Now the code maynot make sense but what I need to do is add a unique url to each thread to go process.
Is it possible to run a external program/process example notepad in thread of you vb application?
View 2 RepliesI have two applications. For performing certain functions, i run a second exe, via a process, and wait till it is complete (exited) to continue with my main application. I run through many repetitive functions on different files.Everything runs fine however, when i am doing a run and it is on the x loop number, the main application seems to halt the secondary process exe. I can only assume this is what is happening as, if i close/stop (not pause) my main application in VB, the second exe continues from where it was halted until it completes.
View 4 RepliesA long time ago, on a PC far, far away from Windows, one MS-DOS program (the father) could run / execute / spawn another MS-DOS program (the son). When the son terminated, it could set a return code which could certainly be interrogated by an MS-DOS batch program or, I think, by any father program that invoked it (depending on the language in which that program was written). I have a small utilility which I want to invoke from my application, and, since that utility sets a return code, I would like to interrogate it in my application when the utility terminates. I've looked through the MSDN Library but could not find anything that seemed to cover this situation. Is there a way to do this in Visual Basic 2008 Express
View 2 RepliesI'm using VB.net 2005, .net framework 2.0
I'm currently having a form that has a button starting a long process, with feedback into another windows textbox (call frmProcessLog).
I'm using a Background worker to laucnh the process, upgrade the status of the process and display feedback on the frmProcessLog textbox, and to know when the thread process ended up, (from the cancel button, from an error or normal termination).
the main thread process has some msgbox in it, asking questions to the operator (yes/no/cancel).
I've added the msgboxstyle.systemmodal to the msgbox call which works "ok" excpet if the operator decide to ignore the showing message box and click the cancel button on the frmProcessLog form, which is still clickable even though I supplied "systemModal" to the msgbox. this makes the msgbox hidden behind the frmProcesslog form and the process can still continue.
If I close my frmProcessLog form, I will see the previously msgbox behind it and If I end up click one of the button it will end up at an application error because the thread that called it is not existing anymore.
So I would like that the msgbox to be launched from the thread making it as if it was launched from my frmProcessLog window in a modal way.
It is my previous problem in vb6, its hard to multithread using vb6 so I migrate my codes to vb.Net.How can I multithread this two loops so that this process is running at the same time.Because when I start my second Loop, my first loop stop in executing. It will start again when my 2nd loop finished.

I have 2 connected GSM Modem in usb port. That codes will send SMS in all contacts in my ListBox.
I want to start a thread, which handles a class. That class should add a listviewitem into a listview on the main form.[code]No idea why that doesn't work.I really need threading, cause it would block the program. These codes are examples, the real one is with loops & stuff, so that blocks the program.
View 1 RepliesI want to start a job in a new thread or using backgroundworker to do it but havent done that before and asking you wich way I should do it. My program has a datagridview with a list of files, one file per row. I want the user to be able to select a row and then press "Start download" to start a background job of the download. I want to get events back of the progress of the download.
I have a class clsDownload that handles everything and raises events back but how do I implement the backgroundworking?Should I use the System.ComponentModel.BackgroundWorker inside of the class or create some wrapper that handles this or use some other threading stuff?
Edit: I dont understand how to implement my download in the backgroundworker, any small example would be very nice. The example on msdn didnt get me far.I have a download class that has a StartDownload-function. Should I use the backgroundworker IN the class or in the caller? "feeling stupid"
