Low Priority Process Not Idle Although CPU Load Is High?
Mar 9, 2011
I have a small problem with process priorities (Win Server 2003 Standard, 8 Core, 16GB RAM). My VB.NET 2005 program starts a process like this:
Dim WithEvents proc As New Process
Sub Main()
proc.StartInfo.FileName = "blastx.exe"[code].....
In this case, blastx.exe runs on 4 cores.I would expect that my started process is idle and has 0% CPU usage while the system is under full load (I simulate this with prime95, 8 worker threads) and only runs if there are free resources. But it generates 25% cpu load and prime95 only 75% instead of expected 0%/100%. In the task manager, I can see that my process has the lowest priority and prime95 has the normal priority.

So I'm making this program that set my game to low priority to prevent less lag, I got it to find if hl.exe is running and if it is, it'll set hl.exe to Low Priority.
I'm using this code but it seem to not work.
If Process.GetProcessesByName("hl").Length = 0 Then
TextBox1.Text = "Waiting for hl.exe"
Else

How can i change a process using only 1 core instead of 2 cores? Also, how can I set different prioritys to each process?As it does not save the settings which i put to each process in taskmanager on restart, i decided to make a program so i could simply click a button so it would change the settings for each process i want.For example:With a simple button click it changes msnmsgr.exe priority to low and makes it use only the 1st core.

When a large image is loaded into a PictureBox, sometimes the process takes way too long. How can I cancel this? Is there anyway to use a keypress or timer to cancel an image from loading? I'm working locally, not loading images via http. I've looked at Application.Events, SystemArgs, DoLoops - nothing seems to address my need to kill the specific picturebox load process.

I want to change a program's priority (Not my own) or start it in a different priority. I have a small peice of code and have no idea where to go from there. Here's the small peice of code that I have:
System.Diagnostics.Process.Start(C:\Srcds)
That's not the exact directory, if it matters.

Why this: System.Threading.Thread.CurrentThread.Priority = System.Threading.ThreadPriority.Highest doesn't work? I ran my app and checked it using the task manager process tab. It was checked as normal.

We have an assignment at school to make a programm with visual basic that helps the user choose a computer, better give him a choice of 3 PCs.the following code is how far we are with comparing but we are knew to VB so...
Private Sub Button3_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles Button3.Click
Dim num1, num2, num3, num4, num5 As String
Dim i, j, x As Integer
Dim help(5, 13) As String
[code]....
sol() is a global variable that contains the characteristics of our 14 computers (in our own format, lol) which we then compare to the users input (via combobox). With "ordi" we "format" the choise of the user to match our format. then the grand comparing begins... the first for-loop should select the computers which fit best but we don't know how to "skip" that computer if the comparison doesn't fit (after all, we still want to use that computer for a second or third choise!). After that the next for-loop should pick the best fitting computer as no.1 (going from top priority down).

Im simply trying to load a file on my network. The file is a database file for access.. This code opens the file on my computer. However on the four computers tested 2 of them throw an error stating that the user canceled the operation. However the user didn't do anything. The error is thrown automatically. The other two are working perfectly fine.

I've got my program running, but when I start it up on Vista, it does so quite slow. I need it to start up faster, I was fiddling around in task manager to check it was actually started and just taking a while, and I noticed it had the priority "BelowNormal", which I'd like to change.
How can I do this from the registry? I've got it starting up, but how do I add a parameter for the process to be started with a higher priority (I.E, normal, abovenormal, high, realtime, etc., I need to test which is suitable).

So I'm new to Ajax. I have an ASP.NET wizard panel wrapped in an ASP Ajax UpdatePanel. The Ajax is working well, with the page doing partial updates as you step through the wizard. I'm even firing an animated gif images using the unblockUI.js jQuery library to prevent multiple page submits.

I'm planning my road in VB training on my own at home using various books and online resources, like MSDN and book publisher support sites, etc. My initial goal is to become familiar w/the VB 2008 language but then to build upon that w/other skills like perhaps, ASP. Net, ADO .Net and so on. Maybe concentrate on WPF/XAML? My question is, where do I go next after initially learning the VB 2008 language? Not only that, what should my learning "list" look like, assuming it a good idea to "add" to the lot w/other VB skills? What's a "real world" learning plan look like in VB? Which should I consider to be "priority" core VB skills to learn after initially learning the VB language?What is a realistic VB skill portfolio look like?

Public WM_SYSCOMMAND As Integer = &H112
Public SC_MONITORPOWER As Integer = &Hf170
<DllImport("user32.dll")> _

It shows this error: Cross-thread operation not valid: Control 'Form1' accessed from a thread other than the thread it was created on.

Is it possible to capture when a machine is idle? I realize that a machine is never really idle, but screen savers work and power management schemes work... So, there must be a way to create an application to capture the same thing, correct?
Has any tried this or has any success capturing when a machine is idling?

Is there a way in which I can detect how long someone has been idle using a form (ie. Not clicking or entering any information into any fields/textboxes). Or would I have to implement a timer which counts this and reset it in the event handler for any entry?

I have an MDI form in VB.nEt where I have to find, if the application remains idle for 20 mins, I got to log off the logged in user. On doing RnD, I found a class that helps us do the same :- http://blog.perfectapi.com/2008/05/detecting-idle-state-in-winforms-apps/
I saved that class in my applicaiton. In my mdi form's Form Load created an instance of that class. Now I don't know how to move ahead i.e. how to find that 20 min lastActivity duration. I belive I got to trap some evcent in my mdi form and find the value of lastActivity and if that is >= 20, then logoff. But which event to trap and how, I have no clue. In the events for the from also, I didn't found any useful.

Adding How would you detect if the user is using the computer? I want a program to detect if the user is using the computer (i.e. mouse and keyboard movements), and if the user doesn't type or move the mouse for a specific amount of time, it executes a command. Normally I would do this with the Application.Idle, but I want it to be detected throughout the system. Any starters?

I've build a vb.net windows service which does nothing but ping a wcf webservice and handles sending a maintenance request to this same webservice at night time. It does both tasks using a timer event. If the service does nothing but these two things it says at startup that it's shutting down cause of being idle. The windows service thread needs something todo.[code]....

Windows resets the IDLE time every time the user touches the keyboard or the mouse. My application needs to reset the IDLE time at specific moments, but how to do this programmatically.
The following does NOT reset the IDLE time using VB, C# or QT4.
- Programmatic mouse movement / click.
- Programmatic keystroke.
Somehow Windows knows these actions are simulated. How can I reset the IDLE time?
