View 1 RepliesI am throwing some data out into Excel and am having some formatting troubles. I have 5 columns (date, time, a long number I don't want displayed in scientific notation - text is fine, text, text). I can get it all working with numberformat, however I have to do them different ways.
Date works this way cell.numberformat = "m/d/yy" and it formats it to say 3/1/11
Time works this way cell.numberformat = "h:mm AM/PM" and it formats it to say 8:07 AM
For the long number cell.numberformat = "@" and it doesn't change the format and it gets displayed in scientific notation
BUT if I use cell.style.numberformat = "@" it works as it should, but it messes up all of the date and time cells. Apparently when you use style.numberformat, it doesn't just apply to the cell you're working with. If I try using style.numberformat with the date and time formats, they don't change and are entered as if I didn't change the format at all.
I have this issue that occurs with me and driving me crazy i have a report that contains thousands of records and i need to export it to excel , but the excel normal extension .xls
is showing missing records at the end of the file , so i save my file as an .xlsx extension it saves correctly but when i open the file it generates an error
"Excel cannot open the file '<var>filename</var>.xlsx' because the file format for the file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file."but when i test the file i drag it and open it in an empty notepad all the records shows up correctly
VB.NET code to change Excel 2007 Column Cell Format from Text to a Number no Decimal.
Right now Column F shows values that look like
3E+13
3E+13
Manually changing it to a Number with No Decimal shows the correct value.
30000046605562
30000041582875
Of course I would like to automate this.

The problem is I am able to extract the data by giving cell reference like: TextBox1.Text = objWorksheet.Cells(5, 2).value
But I want to select a row as per input given by user and want to extract data from that row.
The input given by user is in text format, in my case name of employee. And I have to extract address of that name.

I'm developing a small application that creates Excel files with user details. I'm developing this in vb.net 2008 express edition under Windows XP SP2 and with Office 2003.My target PC is running Windows Vista. I'm able to run my program without any problem and even the Excel files get created without any problem on this PC.However, the problem is when I try to open one of these created files in Vista, I get a message like below:
"The file you are trying to open, "TestMe.xls", is in a different format than specified by the file extension. Verify that the file is not corrupted and is from a trusted source before opening the file. Do you want to open the file now?" If I click yes, it opens up properly. This is a headache as it opens up in my developing PC without any hassle. I'm sure its something to do with the Excel reference I've made in my PC (which is running Office 2003).How best can I save this file so it opens up in Excel 2007 without the above message.
i Have Used Database file for storing Data in my Application.Now I want to take backup of data in Access, Excel or in Any other Format.
View 1 RepliesI am trying to open an Excel file using the following commands:
xlsWB = xlsApp.Workbooks.Open(filename, , True)
where 'filename' is the name of the file.However I am getting the following error message:
Message = "Old format or invalid type library. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80028018 (TYPE_E_INVDATAREAD))"
I originally developed an application where I used the above code with default language setting of "English" (under regional and language settings). When I am changing the language setting to "French", the above errror comes up. I am changing the language setting to French in order to simulate an error when this application is run in a French version computer.
Currently, I've used System.IO.StreamWriter to write items to a text file. However, what I have are items separated by a Writeline(). Meaning, the items are displayed in several rows, in a column. But what I want is a single row, with many columns, separated by commas for each item. Example of what I want: 16/8/2010,100,you
vb.net
Dim psBattery As PowerStatus = SystemInformation.PowerStatus
Dim perFull As Single = psBattery.BatteryLifePercent
Dim Now As DateTime = DateTime.Now
[code]....
ConnectionString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0; Data Source='" + fileName + "'; Extended Properties=Excel 5.0"
Dim ExcelConnection As System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection
ExcelConnection = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection(ConnectionString)
Error occurs on line ExcelConnection.Open()External table is not in the expected format.
how I could check if a certain file is in text or binary format?I'm using VB.Net 2008 Express.
View 2 RepliesSo, I've got a text boxes which loads up a content from a XML file, usually a numbers I want a button, so when I will change the numbers on the text box, the data in file will change as well, in other words a save button That's how the data is being taken from a file

Those EditPaths, Playa2 etc are making up a path to a file
I've been asked to create a string slicing programme that will take data from a spreadsheet and output it to a delimited ASCII file. The data in the text file follows the structure as shown below:
<time:00:00:00:date:01/10/00:lat:52.34:long:28.30:wind:20:temp:-12recipitation:0.03:visibility:50>
The text file has about 7-8 rows off data following the same structure but with a few changes. So I want to remove the semi-colons from each row of data and format the text file so it has the correct columns on the first row and then the data below but with the long, lat removed etc. However I can't just remove all the semi colons as time uses them.[code]...
I am simply trying to do this for knowledge sake. I created a simple code that writes(append) to text file whatever the user enters in a text box and click a button.
I am just wondering if it is possible to format the data in the text file?
Example: Add a space between the data being entered every time?
Or draw a line between each set of entries?

I have a problem on how to format my txt file data using VB.
"DATE",20071016
"STORE","444"
"COMPANY NUMBER","STANLEY"
"Dine In","ITEM"
And the output should be like this.
DATE, STORE, COMPANY NUMBER, TRANSTYPE, ROWTYPE
20071016, 444, STANLEY, Dine In, ITEM
Is there any way i can do this using VB.Net?
Whats the easiest way to change a sheet name of a newly create .xls file using VB.net.
The .xls is created as follows in a directory location:
filename = strDirectoryName & "1-TestFeedFile-" & strToday & "-" & iFile.ToString() & "of" & totalFile.ToString() & ".xls"
outputWriter = File.CreateText(filename)
The header of the xls file is created as follows:
line = "Blah1" & Chr(9) & "Blah2" & Chr(9) & "Blah3" & Chr(9)
outputWriter.WriteLine(line)
This code was orginally written to create a .txt file but was changed to a create a .xls, in that case I'm wondering if i'll have to change the code to create an new excel object which then can be used and access its sheet property?I don't mind if the solution is in VB.net or C#
I am trying to create double and number format cells in excel using NPOI library. I want to have an output like this in my text file
"30092010_1425","2010/10/30"
This is my code
oWrite.WriteLine("{0,10:ddMMyy_hhmm}{0,10:yyyy/MM/dd}", """" + Now())
I have an application that downloads a .txt file via FTP, and then it calls some sql to insert the file data into my database. I want to check whether the file is in the correct format before trying to insert.
The file should consist of some number of rows, each with the following format:
(4 letter code) (tab) (3 or 4 letter code) (tab) (date as dd-MMM-yy) (tab) (variable length text description) (tab) (1 letter code)
Is there a good way to check whether every line in the file follows this pattern, and warn me if it doesn't?
I'm trying to save a text file with a certain format, kind of trying to create some sort of colums, so when I open it will be easier to read...If I have these four words: Calendar, Car, Time, Airplane; I would like to put them into colums...
vb.net
oWriter.WriteLine("{0,50}{1,10}", "Calendar", "Airplane")
oWriter.WriteLine("{0,50}{1,10}", "Time", "Car")
The problem:When I save it to a text file or print it, it comes out like this:Calendar AirplaneTime CarHow can I put them like "centered", so that doesn't look like that mess...?

[Background]:I created a Winforms App that reads data and spits it out into an Excel Spreadsheet. On my computer, I have Microsoft Office 2003 and inside of the Visual Studio Project, I referenced COM Object "Microsoft Excel 11.0 Object Library". The Executable is on a shared directory and end users can run the application and generate the reports themselves.
[Problem]:Problems arise when an end user with Microsoft Office 2007 runs the application, generates the Excel Spreadsheet and sends it to someone with Microsoft Office 2003, the Excel Spreadsheet opens with the standard "this file is not in recognizable format" error and when you push "ok", the data shows up as symbols (garbled text).
[Question]When I reference "Microsoft Excel 11.0 Object Library" in my project, how does the .Net Framework (or my Application) find this COM Object object when it is ran from another CPU?I guess, I would like to know how references work. When you reference DLLs in a VS.Net project, compile the program and then put the execuable on another PC, how does VB.Net go about finding those DLLs you referenced or is it part of the compiled program?
I suspect when a user running MS Office 2007 runs my app, it is running a 2007 dll instead of a 2003 dll.However, I would think an error would be thrown if this was the case.
I'm having some trouble using resource files. In my project I'm using a bunch of bitmap files and two txt files. Bitmaps are used as backgrounds for controls, but .txt files I want to open in Notepad or WordPad. Till now I was accesing them from a file path on my machine:
ControlName.backgroundimage = New Bitmap(direcorypath & "/Map.bmp")
Process.Start(direcorypath & "/Instrukcje.txt")
And it worked fine. Now I added these files to my resources (it's practical for me to have them in executable file) And replaced those lines with:
ControlName.backgroundimage = New Bitmap(MyProject.My.Resources.Map)
Process.Start(MyProject.My.Resources.Instrukcje)
For bitmap it works fine, but for txt file an error occurs saying that a file cannot be found.
Interestin thing is: when I type "MyProject.My.Resources.Instrukcje" in "Watch" it shows the content of the file. So it is there, only not as a file?
I have a label that reads a random line from a text file and that string becomes the text for the label.
Now the problem; the label will only work if it is clicked because the event handler is click.What I need is this to work automatically at startup. In other words, it should change the label's text to the random string of the text file on startup of the application.
Here is my code.[code..]
How can I parse a text file and extract the data to excel file. The text file is in the following format

I have a text file and I want to take the data from the text file and write each line into the excel file (into the same column). How do I accomplish this? I know how to read data from a text file, but I don't know how to insert the data to a excel file..
