Jan 23, 2012

I have an app using UK default dates. When i deploy the app i noticed i get some date related errors when saving data (as some test PCs were setup with US regions). Setting the locale and other regional settings back to UK resolves the issue but wondering if there was a quick way of doing this?

Forcing Custom Date Passed Regional Settings?

Feb 11, 2011

This has been driving me batty for the last while. I have an application that is passing up data to a SQL server table. Part of the data is dates. Because of settings on the SQL server the update will not accept the MM/dd/yyyy format. I have been trying for quite some time to get around this.

For some more information. Changing the update method or the server regional settings is not an option and I don't want to change my regional settings as this may not reflect the production server when this goes live.

Here is what I have tried so far

Code:
Dim dateEnd As Date = Date.MinValue
Dim dateStart As Date = Date.MinValue
If IsDate(Me.txtPostEnd.Text) Then

[Code]....

It works fine if the day is 12 or below because it still thinks that is the month. Is there a way to force the code to recogize that I want to use dd/MM/yyyy format or even dd/MMM/yyyy format?

This has to be done at thhe vb code side as the update to the SQL server is completed via a custom framework so I can't customize the SQL code to insert the data using a CONVERT

VS 2008 Make The Program Use Specific Regional Settings?

Sep 17, 2011

Is it possible with VB .NET to make the program use specific regional settings? More precisely , I want to make my application always use the English regional settings (those defined from Control panel > Regional settings) in order to always use (and calculate) the decimal numbers by using the dot symbol ( . ) as decimal separator , regardless the settings on the current PC (in order to avoid forcing the user to change his Regional settings) ?

VS 2010 Detect User Country From Regional Settings?

Jul 24, 2011

I've searched around but can't find a clear answer for this. From my winforms VB2010 app, I'd like to be able to detect the country of the user's PC at runtime. Specifically, all I really need to detect is whether the user is in Australia or Canada. Most things I've seen will say "have a look at System.Globalization.CultureInfo", but with no clear example. I also know that the old-school "GetLocaleInfo" API can be used for this as well. I do have some code using the latter, which detects Australia when LOCALE_ICOUNTRY returns a value of 61. However, that won't work for Canada, as it returns 1, which is the same as USA (I know that these are based on telephone country codes).

How To Check Remote Desktop Connectivity

Apr 2, 2011

How do I check the connectivity to Remote Desktop through Visual Basic (if possible). I would like to run a program checking if servers is up running normally. In some cases servers will respond to ping, without being able to connect to RDP. It would be great to a program being able to detect loss of RDP-connectivity almost as soon as any problems appear.

Check When Process Is Running On A Remote Computer?

Dec 4, 2009

I need to check if the explorer.exe process is running on a remote computer to verify that there is a user logged on the computer. I Also want to get the Process Owner of the explorer.exe process to check which user is logged on. I have found some VBscript examples online, but i can't seem to get them to work. If anyone knows of a better way of checking if and what user is logged on to a computer, please give me a reply also. I have tried System.Diagnostics.Process.GetProcesses, but i can't seem to get the owner of the process, maybe WMI will do the trick ?

Error To Check Remote Size Of RPT File

Nov 7, 2011

I have developed a system to update various programs. I put the programs updated into a particular folder of my site and Users can launch their update program to download and update their application.

The user interface has two progress bar, one for the single program in download and the second for the total download.

For calculating the total amount of bytes for the second progress bar I need to know the dimension in bytes of programs and files to be downloaded before start downloading. See the attached code.

For that I read, in remote mode, the size of all the files checked and I obtain the total amount of bytes.

All works fine with various type of files (.EXE - .DOC - .JPG - .TXT etc).

The problem arises with the Crystal Report file (.RPT).

The error 404 occurs but the file exists, the server WEB is active and the other files of the list are summed. If I compress the same file in .ZIP all works.[code]...

Getting A Check For A Settings Path?

Apr 24, 2010

I have a app config file with a filewatch file path as a setting. This way the user can change that file path easily on site. My problem comes into play when the file path, usually to another computer on the network is not valid, then I will get a not so nice microsoft error. I would like to catch this error, and put in a friendly msgbox to tell the user it's just an invalid file path. But the file watch is on my first form on the program, and having the catch on the onload of the form is not soon enough. I can catch the error on the form1.designer.vb, but I don't think your suppose to modify that. Cause when I do, bad things happen, like i'm not able to get my form in design mode.

Access Remote Sql Server Using .NET?

Apr 16, 2009

I've found a few examples of using vb.net to access an sql database, so far none of them have worked . They all involve using DataReaders. Maybe its the fact that the sql db is not on the same machine as the application.I was just wondering if anyone had a more comprehensive example of using VB.NET to access a remote sql server.

EDIT:I've received a few helpful comments an replies already. So far my connection string looks like:
"server=sqlblah.myhost.com;uid=myuser;pwd=pass;database=testdb"

Probably also good to mention their is no editing of the tables a this point, just reading.

I'm just not sure how to connect to a machine remotely if I have valid credentials. There seems to be sever ways to accomplish this. I want the most efficient way using vb2008.
