Code / Query That Will Prevent Duplication Of Data
Jun 5, 2011
i'm working on a voting system but im having problems in adding records... i have two a primary key, the idnumber and the address. the address is where I base if that certain address already voted. but the problem is everytime i try to add a record with the same address (ex. Block 1 lot 4), the data is duplicated which is not output i want. the program should detect that there is already an existing address.

i want to prevent user from adding same data on my database... (using access as database)
let say i have 5 fields on my database... ID, Name, address, contact, email... binded to textboxes... idTextbox, nameTextbox, addressTextbox, contactTextbox, emailTextbox.
if the user add a data.... and clicks the save button (saveButton) a messagebox will show a message saying that the data he/she entered already exist..
the messagebox will only show if the user entered a data with the same Name.

I am using Oracle 11g client, with ODP.NET. I am trying to add conditional Transaction handling.
Dim ds As New DataSet()
Dim txn As OracleTransaction
Dim _beginTransaction as Bolean = true
Using conn As New OracleConnection(ConnString)
[Code]...
How do I fix txn being nothing / null? The error is: Variable 'txn' is used before it has been assigned a value. A null reference exception could result at runtime. Edit: to RichardOD for pointing out that you can not explicitly declare that a transaction cannot be opend up on stored procedures via ODP.NET. I have verified that this is an issue. BUT We still haven't figured out why the error is occuring. I understand that txn is initially given a value w/in an if statement, but being defined outside of the try/catch block should make that irrelevant.... right? Or is that bad coding?

This is a simplified version of a class that I have in my project. Since the Bonus is figured the exact same way in each function I want to remove the obvious code duplication that appears here and make the three different functions into one. However I am not sure how to provide the argument that this new function would require.
For instance I am currently just passing the argument like this from code
lblVolumeBonus.Content = TestClass.VolumeBonusAmountStore(bonus).
I think I have to basically turn this logic around and call it with something like
lblVolumeBonus.Content = TestClass.VolumeBonusAmountStore(BonusTrackerBO.StoreBonus)
but I am not sure of the correct syntax or whether I am on the right track at all.
Public Class TestClass
Public Shared Function StoreBonus(ByVal bonus As BonusTrackerBO.StoreBonus) As Double
[Code]....
Edit: It may not make a difference but I should have made clear that there are other factors in the equation (I was just trying to keep it simple). So is the answer the same when there are other callbacks to the bonus like bonus.MaximumAmount, bonus.MinimumAmount? There are 5 callbacks to the bonus object and the amounts are different depending on whether it is a Store, District or Company asking.

Reading through "The Pragmatic Programmer", I've come across the DRY (Don't Repeat Yourself) and Orthagonal (keep code modular) principles.I have a suite of modules, some of which have common procedures. Because each module is a separate project in Visual Studio, up until now I have simply copied code from one project to another when 1 module (project) needs to do the same function as another module (project). This is when functionality overlaps, not when 2 modules (projects) do everything the same.
I always suspected this was bad practice (and have seen the fruits of my suspicions when the subs get out of sync), and the book confirmed me in this belief. So, what I want to do is make a central code repository for the 4 or 5 common subs, but I don't know how to do it.Should I make a .dll file for each sub I want to use in multiple places? If so, how do I do that? Is there another way to do what I want to do?
1. I have a subroutine that takes a filepath (and if disconnected also a SqlConnection) and loads the referenced file into a database as a BLOB.
2. I have 3 separate projects in 1 VS solution that all run basically the same version of this code.
3. I want all 3 to run EXACTLY the same code.
4. I want 1 version of this code so that any changes made don't need to be made in 3 places.
5. I have a few other instances like this for other subroutines.

Am developing a resume data retrieving software where data is stored in one parent table and 4 child tables as such:
Resume_table ----> Parent table
holds ----> Res_ID, Emp_ID, Lang_ID, Task_ID & some other static data
Employee_Table--->which is referenced directly to Resume_Table.Emp_ID similarly ol other 3 tables are referenced to the main parent table Storing and retrieving data is all working fine as long as I am retrieving 1 record for each child tables But some times there might be couple of languages and only single records for other child tables.In dat case as the four child tables are ol in separate subreports whch are called onto the main report whch prints as cv gives redundancy in data i.e by giving duplication of ol records twice which were single records during entry, which i think follows the language table if it consist of 2 records.am using a join query to call these records onto crystal report...

I've tried applying several suggestions found on the web, but still experiencing cached results when querying CRM 2011 with linq. My web.config reads as follows, which is supposed to disable result caching:[code]I can live with that, but it would be nicer, instead of recreating the context, to have a way of ensuring no caching either in code or in web.config.

I have created a parameterized query in my tableadapter. Here is the SQL:
SELECT CalcinerID, Comments, CorrectiveActions, CrucibleOxideWt, CrucibleWeight, DCPressure, DCTemperature,
Date, DischargePressure, FeedPressure, FiredCrucibleOxideWt, GmSampleWt, LIMSNumber, LotNumber, MaterialType,
OperatorID, QualLabOperator, QualLabTimeStamp, RecordID, ToteBinNumber [code]....
When I use the Execute Query button in the Tableadapter Query Builder, the query works fine; I get all the rows I expect. However, when I run this in my code, the query behaves like an equality statement (i.e. Lotnumber = @Lotnumber) rather than a LIKE statement (Lotnumber LIKE '%' + @Lotnumber + '%').Here is the code that is not behaving correctly. Note that I have a textbox, LotSearchTextbox, where I enter the portion of the Lotnumber that I want to use as the filter. I also have a button, LotSearchButton:
Private Sub LotSearchButton_Click(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles LotSearchButton.Click
Try
Dim SomeNumber As Integer = Me.LotCalcinerO2TableAdapter.FillByLotNumber(Me.CalcinerDBDataSet.LotCalcinerO2,[code].....
why the query works in the Query Builder but not in the code?

Is it possible for a class of exposing a type for function returns, without allowing users of that class to create variables of that type? A couple usage scenarios:A Fluent interface on a large class; a statement like "foo=bar.WithX(5).WithY(9).WithZ(19);" would be inefficient if it had to create three new instances of the class, but could be much more efficient if the WithX could create one instance, and the other statements could simply use it.A class may wish to support a statement like "foo[19].x = 9;" even when foo itself isn't an array, and does not hold the data in class instances that can be exposed to the public; one way to do that is to have foo[19] return a struct which holds a reference to 'foo' and the value '19', and has a member property 'x' which could call "foo.SetXValue(19, 9);" Such a struct could have a conversion operator to convert itself to the "apparent" type of foo[19].In both of these scenarios, storing the value returned by a method or property into a variable and then using it more than once would cause strange behavior. It would be desirable if the designer of the class exposing such methods or properties could ensure that callers wouldn't be able to use them more than once. Is there any practical way to accomplish that?In formulating a question, it's difficult sometimes to draw the line between complicated usage cases, and simpler usage cases which aren't quite so important. Here's another usage case, and one closer to the one I'd be most interested in (though I'm also interested in Fluent chaining; being able to have something behave like a C++ reference to a value type would be nice, but probably too much work to bother with).I have a type which is somewhat like the Windows registry, in that it is a hierarchical collection of items, each of which may have a string value, an integer value, and/or a nested collection of items. I wish to be able to support the following types of usage:[code]As for the Fluent interface, my thought would be to have the WithXXX properties return a new instance of a derived class which shadows (not overrides!) the WithXXX properties with versions that simply modify the current instance. The return object from WithXXX would be known to be of the derived class, and would thus use the shadowed WithXXX methods, but once it was assigned to a variable, it would be regarded as an instance of the base class, so the next WithXXX would create a new instance.
C++ a stronger concept of value types than C# or vb.net, including the very useful concept of references to value types; it ensures that references to value types cannot be persisted outside the scope of the type in question. Unsafe code in C# can use pointers to value types, but they don't have the protections offered by C++ references.

I need to disable a button after its pressed so the user does not have the ability to click it again as this would replicate the process in some cases.After alot of searching I found some tips - alot of code I found I could not understand.This is what I have come up with:
On page load:
If Me.Page.IsPostBack Then
'lblDetails.Text = "disabled"
[code]....
I also read somewhere that I should use: System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(1000) to delay the process or something - not entirely sure why I would do this though.Although, the problem with my above code is that when the code behind page performs validation checks, it exits sub before executing my INSERT SQL code - so when it does this it also disables the button.I am not entirely sure if the above method is fool proof or whether it is a **** piece of code that won't work 100% of the time.On another website I found a script to put on the actual HTML page with <script> tags:
Code:
<script type="text/javascript">
disableSubmit(frm) {

I have a Windows 2003 server that we regularly RDP in to monitor some programs that we set up to run on the machine automatically.However, the server will automatically log me out after a few minutes of inactivity. Unfortunately the server admin (who has the admin rights to the server, which I don't) is reluctant to remove such restrictions "for security reasons".
Therefore, instead of me trying to fill up 10000 piece of paper getting a security exemption, I am just wondering if there is any tiny program that I can run on the server (either a script or some VB.NET code) that will trick the server into thinking I am constantly typing something even though I am not (For example, as if I am moving my mouse cursor once every 30 seconds or type any letter then erase it in notepad)?Note that since I do not have admin rights, any installation is certainly out of question, and the script, if any, can not require admin rights to run properly.

I have a project that uses a number of DataGridView controls. Most of the cells are of the DataGridViewTextBoxCell persuasion. I declare my controls like so:Dim MyCell as DataGridViewCell Later I specify whether they are DataGridViewTextBoxControls or DataGridViewComboBoxCells like so:
MyCell = New DataGridViewTextBoxCell MyCell = New DataGridViewComboBoxCell None of the places in my code require the ability for the users to enter their own values in the Combo Boxes. That is, they are either hard-coded or the values are gathered from other data within the application.
Currently, users can highlight a combo box control defined as shown above and begin typing anything they like. For example, I have one combo box that offers the user a selection of integers between 1 and 9. I can highlight the combo box cell and enter "Hello, World!" if I'd like.What does it take to disable this ability? I'm sure there's a property, but I have yet to find it. I have searched the Internet, and have found only the ability to have user-entered values added to the list and a stream of data-binding tutorials.
