I have a situation in which I must execute a dynamically built stored procedure against tables that may, or may not be in the database. The data retrieved is then shunted to a VB.Net backed ASP based report page. By design, if the tables are not present in the database, the relevant data is automatically hidden on the report page. Currently, I'm doing this by checking for the inevitable error, and hiding the div in the catch block. A bit kludgy, but it worked.I can't include the VB code-behind, but the relevant stored procedure is included below.However, a problem with this method was recently brought to my attention when, for no apparent reason, the div was being hidden even though the proper data was available. As it turned out, the user trying to select the table in the dynamic SQL call didn't have the proper select permissions, an easy enough fix once I could track it down.First and foremost - is there a better way to check for a missing table than through catching the error in the VB.Net codebehind? All things considered, I'd rather save the error checking for an actual error. Secondly, is there a preferred method to squirrel out a particular OLE DB error out of the general object caught by the try->catch block other than just checking the actual stack trace string?
SQL Query - The main gist of the code is that, due to the design of the database, I have to determine the name of the actual table being targeted manually. The database records jobs in a single table, but each job also gets its own table for processing data on the items processed in that job, and it's data from those tables I have to retrieve. View 2 RepliesI have been experiencing a problem with one of my Try Catch blocks. Specifically, I have a block of code that inserts data into a db using a stored procedure. There is a problem within the code getting one of the parameters to the SP. I know what the problem is and how to fix it. My issue is that the Try Catch should be stopping any further execution of code once it catches the error. I have verified that the error is being caught and that it sends the exception to my label used for error reprorting. However, instead of stopping future execution and displaying the error it rolls over the label assignment and continues to the next piece of code in the calling procedure. In essence, it is as if there is no error occuring at all.To give everyone a point of reference, I call a sub-routine from a button click event. Within the sub-routine I have my Try Catch block with the SP code. I am NOT using Try Catch Finally. It is simply Try the SP Catch ex as Exception and End Try.

i have this line of code to catch an exception if a letter is inputed, or if it is out of rang as a number, but I have added WHEN to avoid catching numberical data. I have a program in VB.Net that receives mails from Outlook, extracts attachments and inserts the attachments into a table through a query. I would like to put the query/queries in a Try/Catch block, but cannot do so as Outlook exceptions cannot be caught, and it gives me an error, and unless I put a very specific exception, I cannot catch it. Is there a workaround?

Exception is underlined and when I hover on it, it says: "Catch cannot catch type 'Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.Exception' because it is not in 'System.Exception' or a class that inherits from 'System.Exception'". This is affecting all my other code which I'd like to put into a Try/Catch block.

I need to catch log4net exceptions (its own exceptions not app exceptions logged by it). I wish there's a way of doing it this way: [code] I have this code implemented and there's no errors in compilation but i force log4net to have an error (pointing to a non existing database in the config file) and nothing is threw.I've tried the listener aproach: [code] and it's writing the errors to log4net.txt, the forced ones i mean.This last aproach has a couple of drawbacks: it won't append every error to the file, if the error is the same it doesn't write it, i can't get the listener to write every error to that file, only one (I don't know how to fully configure the trace listener, it might be that). Thus it won't append the date and hour to every line wich is a necesity for me. Finally i can't give structure to it (xml). Even if the listener work i need to use the try/catch aproach, since i'm using ExceptionHandling from Enterprise library to log the errors in my app.

When a client connect to the server, the server creates an object that represents the client and stores the reference to this object in an ArrayList. This "IndividualClient" object begins listening for messages, just strings, from the actual client program using a new thread that runs NetworkStream.Read. Now, when the client program is closed, the server-side IndividualClient object is supposed to throw an IOException at the NetworkStream.Read method, but this exception is never thrown, and I'm not able to catch it and handle the disconnecting of the client. With the client not disconnecting and never being removed from the ArrayList, all kinds of problems start to arise when the server tries to send a message to all connected clients.[code]

I am developing an application that reads from a network shared folder on a separate Windows Server. When the application attempts to read, I am receiving the error message "System.IO.IOException: The Device Is Not Ready". I have tried running the application as an Administrator, however I still receive the same error.The files in question do not appear to be in use by any other application.

Now the problem I am having is that even though I use synclock on global variables, I will still at times get errors and I am sure that this is just the crude way of coding I am doing, but I was wondering if someone had a better option. However when I run the code I get a IOException "C:Users***Desktoplog.txt" is in use by another process. the log is not open in notepad or any other program so what other process is using that file?

Determining the max filename & path size of the OS.zip I whipped up a quick app to test the max filename & path length for a chosen folder. It works gr8 except when I choose the root of the C-drive. When I do, I get this error:
