Pass An Object Variable But Doesn't VB Force Decalre The Header As ByRef?

Oct 20, 2011

Why if you pass an object as byVal into a method is it then treated as if it were byRef? I know you're only passing the reference across when you pass an object variable but why doesn't VB force you to decalre the header as byRef?

.net - ByRef Underlined With "Expression Expected" Error When Trying To Pass In A Object Of Type List(Of ClsFooDetail)?

Mar 3, 2010

I work with C# 99% of the time. However, I'm having to update some legacy VB.Net code and encountering an issue with VB.Net code syntax. The error that I get is "ByRef" is underlined and "Expected Expression" tag shows up when you hover over "ByRef". The "FooDetail.Load" function is written in C# and expects a List object passed as reference. Don't have any trouble using the same function in other C# classes. Can someone indicate what is wrong with below VB.Net code.

Dim FooDetail As New clsFooDetail()
FooDetail.FooID = FooID
Dim lstFooDetail As New List(Of clsFooDetail)
FooDetail.Load(ConnectionString, "Stored Procedure", ByRef lstFooDetail as System.Collection.List(Of(clsFooDetail))

VB Compiler Is Unable To Recover From The Error: System Error &Hc0000005& (VB Internal Compiler Error)

Jul 1, 2011

This error first appear to occur randomly. Steps to recreate:Open Visual Studio and load a solution (some files automatically opened) - this is when the problem occurs Close all open files Restart visual studio and load solution (no issues)Open Exactly the same files again, restart visual studio and load solution so files open automatically (problem occurs!)

However, when trying to narrow it down to a single file (that is automatically opened when the solution is loaded), I couldn't reproduce the problem. Now with all the files open again the problem doesn't occur!!! So it looks like it is fixed - though this happened before and eventually the issue came back.

I think it is to do with one of the user controls with DevExpress controls on it - when the error occurs, the designer displays the error. Though I can't reproduce it at the moment to confirm that.

Is The C# Compiler Smarter Than The .NET Compiler

Feb 9, 2012

If I look at the IL that is created in Linqpad for the two following code snippets, I wonder what happens here.

In c#
int i = 42;

results in the following IL code

IL_0000: ret

whereas in VB

Dim i As Integer = 42

it is

IL_0000: ldc.i4.s 2A
IL_0002: stloc.0

Apparently, the c# compiler understands the the value is never used and thus simply returns nothing. In VB.NET the actual code is translated.Is that due to differences in compiler optimization or is there anything else at work?

Update: Just to clarify this - I just enter this one line into LinqPad and look at the IL it creates (most definitely by running the respective compiler). There is no program.

Wpf - How To Show Legal Moves

Oct 15, 2011

I want to make a game where the playing pieces can move around. When I click on a playing piece it shows all available moves were I can go like this:

Red represents legal moves and dark gray represents a wall.

I have created a grid and buttons in it. When I click on a button, I subtract or add the available step count to the button index in the grid. For example if my piece can move 3 places, I subtract 3 from the index of the button and get the available position to the left of the piece. Then I do the same for all other directions. It looks something like this:

For each i as button in grid
Select case grid.indexof(i)
Case grid.getindex(currentPlayingPiece) - 3 'Left

[Code]...

Using this method it is very slow and cumbersome to get all available moves and not intuitive to get top and bottom moves. Also if there is a wall in the way and behind there's a available spot it shows that I can move to it.

Convert Bytes To XML Legal Text?

Aug 8, 2011

I have to store the bytes of a image file inside of an XML file that is read by another program... The problem is, if I inject it as just plain bytes, the end-program has an error (presumably because it contains non-legal XML characters). How can I convert bytes into something that XML can legally read? I really have no other options at this point. I have to inject the image file as bytes (specifically a .bmp file).
