I have a Vb.net program which is a financial application. It is a charting program that means it loads stock market data and shows charts. I need to create a small interpreter so that users can write code and execute.For e.g. if user wants to apply a technical tool such as moving average then he can type, Dim M as Integer. M= MovingAvg("Simple",10)Stuff like that, it should support statements like variable decl, arrays, for next, do loop, calculation like addition, subtraction, multiplication & division. Plus other statements that are specific to my software. There is no need for going lower level or thinking on exe terms as I am not building a standalone windows application.

View 1 RepliesI am creating a project in VB.NET in which one of the reports require that the name of employees should be displayed as column names and whatever work they have done for a stated period should appear in rows below that particular column.Now as it is clear, the columns will have to be added at runtime. Am using an ODBC Data source to populate the grid. Also since a loop will have to be done to find out the work done by employees individually, so the number of rows under one column might be less or more than the rows in the next column.Is there a way to create an empty data table and then update its contents based on columns and not add data based on addition of new rows.

what WPF based apps are?Is it an application that runs under Silverlight? This error first appear to occur randomly. Steps to recreate:Open Visual Studio and load a solution (some files automatically opened) - this is when the problem occurs Close all open files Restart visual studio and load solution (no issues)Open Exactly the same files again, restart visual studio and load solution so files open automatically (problem occurs!)
However, when trying to narrow it down to a single file (that is automatically opened when the solution is loaded), I couldn't reproduce the problem. Now with all the files open again the problem doesn't occur!!! So it looks like it is fixed - though this happened before and eventually the issue came back.
I think it is to do with one of the user controls with DevExpress controls on it - when the error occurs, the designer displays the error. Though I can't reproduce it at the moment to confirm that.
If I look at the IL that is created in Linqpad for the two following code snippets, I wonder what happens here.
In c#
int i = 42;
results in the following IL code
IL_0000: ret
whereas in VB
Dim i As Integer = 42
it is
IL_0000: ldc.i4.s 2A
IL_0002: stloc.0
Apparently, the c# compiler understands the the value is never used and thus simply returns nothing. In VB.NET the actual code is translated.Is that due to differences in compiler optimization or is there anything else at work?
Update: Just to clarify this - I just enter this one line into LinqPad and look at the IL it creates (most definitely by running the respective compiler). There is no program.
If it's 0-based, how can we add a placeholder to make it 1-based?
View 4 RepliesI've been serialising and deserialising .net objects using the XmlSerializer class without problem, however we now need somebody else to look at that data to perform some analysis on it.In order to help with that we've produced an XSD based on our class like so:

Bizarly, the XML produced does not adhere to the XSD generated from the same class.My question then is, is there a way of telling the XmlSerializer to serialize the object based on a given XSD? As an aside, I've looked at other ways of fixing this: I've tried re-generating the classes from the generated XSD - this seemed to have the same problem.
Usually I am a web developer so this is probably a very novice question. I recently made an app in VB2008, but I developed it in a huge reso (1920x1200). The person that will be using it still uses 800x600 reso. Is there any simple way I can resize the entire interface to fit any resolution? I've come across a few anomolies that I hope someone can help me with!In the examples IPortableDeviceManager.GetDevice appears in C# to receive a string array. But in VB.NET it appears to only receive a string. I have a similar issue with IPortableDeviceManager.GetDeviceFriendlyName which according to the C# samples appears to receive a char array, whereas in VB.NET it is accepting a UShort.

i want to set DisplayMember based on ValueMember. just like we do in normal combobox like

I'm using LuaInterface for .NET to create Windows Forms objects. This works pretty good except for one thing:I want to use the Anchor property of Control to make them resize automatically. If I only set one of the Anchors (e.g. only AnchorStyles.Top), it works, but this doesn't really make sense. I have to set more than one Anchor, which is done by combining them with "bit-wise or" (or by just adding them numerically).
In VB.Net both works:

which is in a sense correct as "LuaInterface treats enumeration values as fields of the corresponding enumeration typ" (says LuaInterface: Scripting the .NET CLR with Lua).It is also not possible to assign the value as a number:

This time, the error message is rather unspecific:

I have a listbox with two values, Current account and Deposit account.The current account has an interest rate of 7% and the deposit account 3%.I have 4 other textboxes. The boxes on the right is where the user inputs and the left side holds the value.

What I want for the Investment Amount is that if the user selects Current account, the amount invested will be automatically calculated with the 7% interest and the same for the deposit, calculation with 3% interest.And the Interest over a year textbox to show how much the interest will be over that year at the rate (whether its 7 or 3%)
I am the author of the MAPM arbitrary precision math library. This is a library which allows the user to make any calculation to any desired precision level. The library is written in straight ANSI C.
On many occasions, I get an email on how to use the library from a VB.NET / Visual Basic application. I have very little basic experience, and I don't know what to tell them. I would really like to tell them how to proceed to call MAPM from a basic application.
Let's assume they can compile the library with a C compiler and create a DLL.

Is there any way to declare this restriction to the compiler?And a second question: If the answer to my first question is 'no, there isn't', then what's the best way to cast T to a plain integer? i have made a console based socket program in vb.net, all it does 2 things:
1- server shows a msgbox when the command msg is sent from the client
2- the server opens the cd try when the command open is sent form the client
when i run it , i type the command open and works just fine , the cd tray opens , but if i type open again or msg it simply wont do anything(this also applies for the command msg, if type it a msg is shown, but if i type it agine or open , it wont respond. so its like one command per session. i tried to put the code in a while loop , but didnt work?
