I have created a project in VB.net in which i have used SQL database connectivity
connection string of my project is stored in project properties > settings in the way
<connection string name>, <type>, <scope>,<actual connection string>
I want to provide that connection string dynamically at the startup of my applicaion

I am using vb.net and SQL server 2005 I have a project with database classes which are generated from database objects. That is I add a dataset to the project and drag and drop a database object onto it. The problem with this is that I have to give a connectionstring which is stored in the code. This is ok while developing the application. But runtime I want to use another connectionstring, both for security reasons and because each user of the application will correspond to a database user (SQL) and shall have a corresponding connectionstring. Is there an easy way to do this without having to restore to plain all datasets and do everything myself?

Using WINFORMS (VB 2008 Professional) in an XP Pro system, I have been able to create Data entry forms that capture required variables from user necessary to generate price/profit/resources required for a given project. The entry forms comprise textboxes, numeric updowns, comboboxes. All my calcs run well and I output the control contents to tables in SQLExpress. (I am a landscape architect).
But, I have to find out how to:1. Save contents of all data entries on the quotation form as a Project1.(suffix) file (as well as the current SQL DB), such that the user can at a later date, reopen original quotation details and rework the original estimate by altering one or more of the controls on the form. User can then save again and so on until user issues his/her final quote estimate to client.
I have been on some journey trying to pin this down - to no avail really; although tempted to ring the infamous (and very eloquent) Beth Massi, thought I would seek help from this Forum first.

I understand the possibilities for encrypting a connection string in .net v4. I have a win forms application that will be used by multiple people on different machines. I understand that I need to protect the connection string at time of the app being first run on the target machine. However I am concerned that for a period of time my connection string will be unencrypted. I am looking for advice in how to deploy my app with the connection string already encrypted or encrypted during installation. encrypting the connection string in a secure way?

I have a connectionstring in MySettings which all my datasets use. The project has three copies of the same database: LIVE, WHATIF and TEST. I need to have a dialog in my startup that asks the user which db they want to use and then I thought I could amend MySettings.Connection string dynamically. Hey-ho it's read-only! Is there any other approach I can use where I change a connection string once and all my datasets will then point to the selected db?

I'm developing an app in vb.net (visual studio 2008). I have a Teradata back-end that will be supporting multiple users in a production environment. I need to use variables in the connection string as the user/pass will be changed every 3 months.
For the gist of the application:
In it's most basic form - I have a search form which works correctly - it pulls results into a listbox and the user then double clicks the list box which will then open a form that is bound via table adapter to the back-end table (Teradata). My connection string is fine everywhere in the application. My problem is using a modified connection string for the "fill" function of the table adapter once the form is opened.
I'm using the code below for the on-load event and keep getting an "invalid connection string" - again, the connection string works fine everywhere else in the app, and the variables etc... are working correctly.
Private Sub adaptertest_Load(ByVal sender As System.Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles MyBase.Load
Dim DBConnStr As String = "Provider=TDOLEDB;Data Source=TDDEV;Persist Security
[Code].....

I can hide my startup form (or make it appear hidden) on startup. I can start my app on windows startup--through registry values--if the user checks a checkbox.
But if the app starts up on windows startup, I want the form to be hidden, so the program can just keep working without bothering anyone. If it starts up because the user started it, I want the form to be showing, because the user probably wants to change some settings or something.

Is there a way to dynamically create an object using a string as the class name?I've been off VB for several years now, but to solve a problem in another language, I'm forced to develop a wrapper in this one. I have a factory method to dynamically create and return an object of a type based on input from elsewhere. The provided input is meant to be the class name from which to create an object from. Normal syntax means that the entire class has to be explicitly spelled out. To do it this way, there could literally be hundreds of if/then's or cases to handle all the available class/object choices within the referenced libs:
If c_name = "Button" then obj = new System.Windows.Forms.Button
If c_name = "Form" then obj = new System.Windows.Forms.Form
....
[code].....

In my windows form I have an empty datagridview that contains strings loaded from a csvfile. The datagridview has no initial column collection. There are four columns in the csv file. In the csv file, columns 1 and 2 have values of true orfalse. So far I am able to load the text perfectly.
What I want to do is change the strings "true" or "false" into an image in my resources (a pretty green checkmark and a red x).
I would like to leave the csv file text as it is, and then change the columns dynamically.
Then, when I save the information back to the csv file, the images must be converted to text strings to accomodate the csv.

The code below works so i know the resource is registering correctly ...
vb.net
My.Computer.Audio.Play(My.Resources.alrt2xuk, AudioPlayMode.Background)
But what im trying to do is make a function where I can play the audio file in the programs resources with a string variable being passed to it representing the resource objects filename.
this is so users can type in a audio files name and pull it from the program's resources dynamically VS a big case i would keep having to expand ...
heres my code

but that isnt working for some reason ... keeps throwing "objects reference not set to instant of an object" on the "Return ..." line

I have a need for an application with a SQL database back-end. The application will run on a laptop and will therefore be used both on and off the network. I can write the app and I can link it to SQL over the network. I also know how to dynamically change the connection string so I can handle online/offline data source connections. Where the data can be stored on the local client? I'd like the data to be held in the central SQL DB and to automatically copy to the laptop upon connection to the network. The client data source is read-only and will not upload back to SQL. I've seen XML mentioned but that looks overly complex.

I have a label that reads a random line from a text file and that string becomes the text for the label.
Now the problem; the label will only work if it is clicked because the event handler is click. What I need is this to work automatically at startup. In other words, it should change the label's text to the random string of the text file on startup of the application.
Here is my code.[code..]
