Create A Class Library That Has Forms To That The Users Can Perform Some Functionality?
Mar 14, 2008
I want to create a Class Library that has forms to that the users can perform some functionality. Is that possible in VS 2008? I believe it is, but can't find any examples out their to provide a template or a guide to create mine. What I am trying to do is put common functionality in a class library to multiple applications that I create can access this class library to perform some functionality.

Relating to another question I asked yesterday with regards to logging I was introduced to TraceListeners which I'd never come across before and sorely wish I had. I can't count the amount of times I've written loggers needlessly to do this and nobody had ever pointed this out or asked my why I didn't use the built in tools. This leads me to wonder what other features I've overlooked and written into my applications needlessly because of features of .NET that I'm unaware of.
Does anyone else have features of .NET that would've completely changed the way they wrote applications or components of their applications had they only known that .NET already had a built in means of supporting it?
It would be handy if other developers posted scenarios where they frequently come across components or blocks of code that are completely needless in hindsight had the original developer only known of a built in .NET component - such as the TraceListeners that I previously noted.
This doesn't necessarily include newly added features of 3.5 per se, but could if pertinent to the scenario.
Edit - As per previous comments, I'm not really interested in the "Hidden Features" of the language which I agree have been documented before - I'm looking for often overlooked framework components that through my own (or the original developer's) ignorance have written/rewritten their own components/classes/methods needlessly.

I've designed my own encryption application in VB 2008 that has a free tools section where users can choose a particular wizard to use from the drop down. The javascript wizards display the code required to put in their own sites. I already created wizards that users can well, use.I see people have their own "contact form wizards" on their websites all the time. Where users can use the wizard and get the displayed code to copy and paste on their sites. But trying to locate source codes to these things is very aggravating on the web.So what I want to do is create my own "form wizard" like out of javascript, that allows the user to put in some information then get the displayed code to put in their own websites. I'm not looking for the generator such as the online form generators. But the javascript source code(s) for the generator itself. Then I could simply put a form generator inside of my VB-app, that will allow the user to use the wizard, then get the html code to paste in their own sites. Preferably not the PHP one because the php backend is very difficult to put in a VB app.I know that it can be done. For example copying a web pages source code then putting it inside a string, then calling that string from a button click that will open the javascript page in the webbrowser inside the VB app.

I was wondering is it possible to put forms into a class library project and if so could I use those forms as an mdi child from my main forms app?A bit behind what I am trying to do:I am creating a game which is essentially going to have its own 'operating system' As the user progresses in the game they can 'install' new software into their operating system.I have my 'Desktop' that is an MDI Parent and what I want the users to be able to do it when they have purchased a new bit of software (also in game) the game will connect to my central server download a dll and place it in a directory, that is essentially installing the new bit of software and the game will then pick up that dll and add a new button the Programs list and when the user clicks on that software in the Programs list it will launch the form in the Class Library as an MDI Child of the 'desktop

I am using visual studio 2010 and tried to create a class library which I then use in an application that will create tasks using the TaskFactory and execute the class functions from the newly created class library. However I get the instance not defined errors in the application.
CLASS LIBRARY:
Assembly Name: GPStream
Root namespace: TFStream
Project with different classes:
GPStream:
gStream.vb,
[Code] .....
I do have it added as a reference.
Class library:
Assembly name GPStream, Root Namespace GPStream
Project name GPStream, Main Class gStream

I have a solution built of 3 projects:
1. VB.NET Class Library - data access and objects, reusable methods, etc.
2. ASP.NET Web app - web application that references the class library
3. VB.NET Windows Form app - windows app that references the class library
I have no problems with the web app. It referenes the class library and every time the project is built the web app gets a freshly compiled dll from the class library.
My problem is with the windows form app. When I first add the reference to the class library project, I get all of the intellisense I'd expect while coding. When I try to compile, though, it's like the reference disappears and all my code that is based on the class library errors out with "'xxx' is not declared" or "'xxx' is not defined" where 'xxx' is a method or class within the class library. If I go into the project properties, the reference is still there, but the project no longer compiles and I also lose intellisense for all classes within the class library. If I remove and re-add the reference, it works again, until I try to compile. Then the errors occur again.
I've tried creating a separate Windows Forms project and just referencing the DLL created by the class library but get the same problem. HOWEVER, if I create a seperate blank WEB project and reference the dll (or the project), everything compiles fine. It seems to be something with my class library being referenced by a windows forms app.
For reference purposes, my class library has the following references:system, system.cor, system.data, system.data.datasetextensions, system.drawing, system.web, system.xml, system.xml.linq I noticed I can't add a reference to System.Web in my windows forms app, and I wonder if my problem is somewhere in this area. I need the reference is my class library because it passes some HttpContext objects back and forth to a few of the methods.

I am trying to create a DLL from a class library in Visual Basic.
First I created a new Project in Visual Basic Express 2010 as a class library. Then I added a class which contains a function that I want to access in another program. This is why I want to export the class library as a DLL. In visual studio I am compiling the project which refreshes the saved dll in the bin folder of the project directory. When I open this dll or include it as a reference in another executable visual basic project, it does not find the function. how to generate a dll from a visual basic class library properly?
Here is the code of the class stored in the class library project:
Public Class Test
Public erg As String
Public Shared Function fTest(ByVal in As String, ByRef out As String) As Boolean
[Code]....

I am using VB .NET 2003. I have created a user defined Class Library and created a reference to it in my application. Is there a way I can compile the application so that the Class Library DLL is embedded into the application? I would really like to be able to distribute the application without having to distribute the DLL as a second a file.
In other words, I made a New Class Library lets say called TEST. I developed a new class within this library called MYCLASS. I built the Library TEST and created TEST.DLL. I then made a new visual basic project called APP1. I added a reference to TEST.DLL. I now can use TEST.MYCLASS within my APP1 project. The application APP1.EXE will run in the test environment, but if I move it to the runtime environment it will give me an error "File or assembly name TEST or one of its dependencies was not found". To correct this error I can place TEST.DLL in the directory where APP1.EXE resides. I would prefer not to have to put TEST.DLL in the directory. Can I easily compile it into APP1?

I need to know if it's possible to administer the users (create new users, assign them to roles, etc.) from a windows application - the powers that be don't want any administrative functionality in the web app itself. Here is the membership provider definition from web.config:

To me the answer to this question will be stupidly simple, but I cannot find it. I want to generate child forms to do simple tasks from my main form. I want to be able to create and destroy these child forms as I use the main form. I decided to create a class of the child form, with its own constructors and destructor. When I tried to do this using the Class Library Module, I could not access the Windows.Forms class to create a form.

I have a combo box having multiple items and I want by typing the item should select automatically and combo box style should be "DropdownList" type.Lets say I am typing "I" then country like "India", "Indonesia, Italy" should sort automatically. It is happening by default in VB.NET for one character. But I want If I type "India" this should select "India" instead of "a...." because my last character is a. in VB.Net it is selecting country like starts with "a. But I want the full typing option should be present for the combo box.

I have a class library in VB.NET that does a NET-envelope for an USB device driver. There is only one function of that driver that I could not envelope in a traditional class, but I had to put it in a Windows Service as described here:Sharing a class property (field) between applications. The Windows Service works fine, but I have now two projects for my NET-envelope: the one with the class library, the second with the windows service and I do not like the idea to maintain two distinct projects for the same driver. Is it a good practice (or even if possible) to add a windows service class to a normal class library (without creating its own project as described in the vb tutorial)?I know, in any case I should create a separate setup only for the windows service, but in this way I could have together all the classes that envelope my usb device driver in only one project.

Im building a, lets say kiosk, that has only one form of input and that is a keyboard. I've got an up/down/left/right arrows and the enter button. I have a form that needs to have hundreds of buttons. I've arranged all my buttons in a giant grid and want the user to use the arrows to navigate through the buttons. The button that is 'highlighted', lack of a better term, has different colors so we know which button we currently are on. So when the user hits the down arrow the button below the current button gets highlighted. My issue is that when the user hits the left and right arrows the 'cursor' doesnt move left and right it moves up and down.
The left and right arrows follow the tabindex sequence.

I've createda vb.net class library where I've defined a number of small classes... nothing complicated, just working with strings, sending emails, etc.In another project, I reference the class library and I'm seemingly able to create an instance ofone of tclasses - intellisense shows me all of the plic properties, methods, etc... all looks perfect. No compile errors at all, nothing b gumdropsand lollipops. When I run the app I'm working on that references the class library, it fails at the point where I'm creating an instance of the class and gives me a vague exception, "System.TypeLoadException".

I want to create a User-Control that inherits the functionality of a TabContol.
I begin by starting a new project of the type Windows Form Control Library. Next I place a TabControl on the UserControl designer surface and Dock the TabContol to Fill the UserControl.
I go to the code editor for the UserControl and enter the following line of code.
Inherits System.Windows.Form.TabControl
Then I run the program and get an error. Intellisence recommends that I use one of two recomendation. When I accept the recommendation I and try to run the program the problems esculate.
The design-surface is no longer accessable.
I try to comment out the problem lines of code in the UserControl1.Designer.VB file but that doesn't help.
How can I create a UserControl that Inherits the Properties of the TabControl so that the properties of the TabControl are visable in the Properties Window?

I have made a class using New->Class Library. I have 2 constructors, 1 function (that computes length of circle), one subroutine that computes area of circle, and main subroutine.
Public Class Class1
Class Circle
Dim rad As Double
[CODE]...
My problem is when I try to run the program: No errors of syntax.
What I must do? I need to right click in solution explorer add new item->add->class and copy here this code?
After I write the code I chose from the vb menu: Build->Build Solution_name
Before writing the code I choose File->New->and selected class library then save all to save as a project.
Or class library is only a dll file that runs with a windows forms application. (that is added after i write the code for write library).
