Create A Delegate And Use The Function In Program Called DoStuff()?
Jan 4, 2012
For a class, I have to create a delegate and use the function in my program called DoStuff(). There is an error tht says "Method 'Public Sub DoStuff(stringVal As String)' does not have a signature compatible with delegate 'Delegate Sub MyDel()'.

I have a function Process(data, f) where data is a normal parameter and f is a function needed to process the data (passed as a delegate to Process)
The signature of f is int f(a,b,c), with a, b, c supplied by Process when it calls the delegate.
Up until here, standard delegate usage.
Now, I have a special but common case where I would like to call Process with a constant f function. So I would like to write SimpleProcess(data, k) so that the caller does not need to create a delegate in this case, just pass the constant k (the only information needed).
So I need to dynamically create a constant function, g(a,b,c) which takes 3 parameters (which are ignored) and always returns k. This has to be done within the SimpleProcess function, so that I can then simply call Process(data, g) from within that function, without the need to rewrite the whole Process function for this special case.

I have a function to pull data from a XML, and to report a specific number based on a value in one of the elements in the XML. Unfortuntately, I can't get any break points to work, so I've been debugging with a trace.he strange this is that when i take out the function itself it works like it should, otherwise the Service freezes when it gets to the function and never uses it. I'm calling the function in while loop which is also within a Try Statement, here's example of the code.
Public
Shared Function GetXNumber(ByVal
audit As Audit.API)

I have been developing a calculator for complex math. (Much more complicated than +,-,/,*, and above your usual scientific calculator)Its works quite well .In past programs I have used "private functions". I know that you give them a value and it returns on back. But what if you dont want to recive or send value? My example for this is a function I am attempting to make called "Autopi".The idea of Autopi is that whenever a mathimatical operation is about to be performed textbox(s) are cheked to see if they contain pi. (3.14 or 3.141) If they test positive Autopi will continue pi to however many places have been specifyed in the program. (Currently 300 places just beacuse i can :) Before the Autopi function does this it chekes to see if variable "pi" = 1. If it does it proceeds if it doesent its job is done
How would I create a code that can be called apon to activate but not recive or send any information through the program. And just to clarify what I mean by that is it will read information out of a textbox and write into it. But it wont actualy recive anything or send anything back from where it was called apon.

How can I call a function from inside another function and suspend the calling function until the called function is finished? I hope I can get some replies because I don't know how to ask the question and make sense:).
Anyway what I am trying to do in steps:
1. The user clicks button1 which triggers the click event.
2. From the click event I call a function
3. I then pop-up a form, that has instructions for the user to read.
4. After the user has read the form he will click the "Done" button and return to the calling function.
The problem is the the calling function continues to execute. I want to stop execution of the calling function until the users clicks the "Done" button on the instruction pop=up. I know I can use a msgbox but the instructions can be lengthly and does not look good in a msgbox.
I have tried the Call method with return in the "Done" button click but I can make that work. I also tried a goto statement but I can get that to work either. In the call statement I said call frmInstruction.show() and it got there but as I said the calling function continued to execute.

If a subroutine is called within a function, does the function always wait until that subroutine is completely finished before it will proceed with the rest of the function? If so, is there any way to make it not wait and continue on with the rest of function and not care what happens in the subroutine?

I recently found an awesome tool called "Freemind" that is called a 'mind mapping' program. It's similar to MS Visio but way cooler and more automated.I reeeallly would like to integrate this into a VB.net Form, but how?
Has anyone seen or heard of mind mapping inside VB.net before? Are there programs out there already that work with VB.net or anyone have an example they have seen / built that works?

Suppose I have a class that represents a product to be priced using one of a number of different pricing strategies. This pricing occurs hundreds of times per second, so to eliminate repetitive if/else statements I am instead using a delegate to launch the appropriate strategy, like so:
Private Delegate Sub PricingModel(ByVal params As PricingParameters)
Private myPricingModel As PricingModel
Private myPricingParameters As PricingParameters[code].....
But this doesn't look right to me (though it seems to work). Is there an accepted/better way of doing this? Or is this the standard way? Or is this just simply a doomed approach from the start?

I need to convert the following C# code to VB.NET:
public bool TryGetRewriteMatch(UrlContext url, out RedirectMatch match)

However, I need to reference Url and ProductID in the function and I don't know how to pass them as parameters or get their values from the original function.

I am exposing some ISO C++ data types to .Net (mono on Linux to be precise). For the purpose of brevity, I shall refer to C# in my question, although my question relates to all of the .Net languages (with C# and VB.Net being my target languages). So far, I have worked out how to expose the ISO C++ data types in C# class(es) for use in mono -The only problem so far is how to deal with the C++ callbacks. In .Net languages (C# and Vb.Net), I believe 'delegates' are the callback equivalent.
Sticking with C# for now, can anyone recommend a way that I can register the C# delegate functions with my ISO C++ code. The ISO C++ code is a notification library, and I want to be able to "push" the notifications to the mono framework (i.e. C# delegates in this case). My underlying assumption is that the mechanism/steps to implement this would be the same for the .Net languages - I'll just have to code the actual delegates in the .Net language of choice - is that assumption correct?Last but not the least, is the question of thread saftey. The underlying ISO C++ code that I am exposing to .Net (mono to be more specific), is both re-ntrant and thread safe - do I have to do anything "extra" to call .Net delegate from my ISO C++ code?

from the documentation we have this: Multicast Delegate: Represents a multicast delegate; that is, a delegate that can have more than one element in its invocation list.
so am i right to say that Multicast delegate is no different from a normal delegate other than the fact that it has arguments. so System.Action is a 'normal' delegate whereas System.Action(T)(Byval obj as T) is a multicast delegate?

I wrote a serializer (to Byte Array) for dictionaries that have a string key, but an object of some sort as its value.I've never implemented a generic type in a function or used a delegate before, so I'm a bit concerned about this being significantly slower than writing a serialization function for a specific type of Dictionary (Dictionary(Of String, MyClass) for example)Should this code be significantly slower due to the use of the generic type or the delegate?
[code]...
It works, and I could loop it and compare it to a more static Dictionary serializer, but I'm more concerned about when I start using this for a lot of different String/Object dictionary combinations, and it'll take me a long time to write a bunch of static dictionary serializers (that's what I'm hoping to avoid in the first place)edit: simplified intro text

I have a section of code that deletes a lot of columns, one at at time, based on conditions that arise. Currently it does this:
objrpt.objXLSheet.Columns(col) _
.EntireColumn.Delete(Excel.XlDeleteShiftDirection.xlShiftToLeft)
There are so many of these, that I'm getting tired of looking at these lines so I want to curry the references to the Excel stuff.I tried:
Dim DelCol As Func(Of Integer) = Function(col As Integer) _
objrpt.objXLSheet.Columns(col) _
.EntireColumn.Delete(Excel.XlDeleteShiftDirection.xlShiftToLeft)
but that won't compile, giving me the error: "Nested function does not have the same signature as delegate 'System.Func(Of Integer)'. Ah forget it. I see that I'm trying to call a method from a function. I guess that won't work.Wait, I'm now trying it another way. I first defined a function:
Private Function DeleteColumn(ByRef objrpt As ExcelReport, ByVal col As Integer) As Object
DeleteColumn = Nothing
Dim objrng As Excel.Range
[code]....
Now the error message is a little different:
"Nested function does not have the same signature as delegate 'System.Func(Of Object)'.

i need to create multiple threads to improve a function on my program. it is a simple thing really but it's slow and if multithreaded it can improve the speed some thousand times. my program uses a dll to check the MX record of an e-mail from a textbox called emails if the mx record is correct then it validates that domain, if not, it sends to an error textbox with that mail my problem is that im reading a lot on multithreading and i dont have an idea how to make something like this: for x=0 to emails.lines.count -1' start a thread that runs my function next if i can limit the number of threads to avoid crashing it would be good.

I have a website where people send each other messages Recently I noticed that sometimes the same message is sent more than once
For example, a message is sent four times within three seconds or twice within a second.I do not understand how this could happen, once the user clicks on the button that sends the message .So all the window switches and a message showup saying "the mail is sent successfully." I checked that if the user refreshes the page after it sends a message, then really the message is sent again. But I do not think that's the case, becouse the message is sent twice within one second.I am writing in vb.net and using mysql data base.Maybe it's related to the queue for the db, i do not know. Here's the code:
Function calls:
Call GlobalFunction.update_mailbox_table(user_id, receiverId, txtMessage.Text, private_picture)
the insert function
Public Shared Sub update_mailbox_table(ByVal user_id As Integer, ByVal receiverId As Integer, ByVal message As String, ByVal[code].....

Im going to have particles dieing and spawning new ones tho, To do this i need to be able to pass a function to the particle when its created then call that function when it dies. Is there a way to do this by passing function pointers?
