Create A Private Shared Object In Each Class And Lock On That Instead?

Jul 13, 2009

I have created a synchronized queue and am using SyncLock on the SyncRoot property of that queue when I invoke the Enqueue/Dequeue methods. The methods are invoked from instances of standard producer/consumer classes. Is that a proper use of the SyncRoot property?

Would it be better practice to create a private shared object in each class and lock on that instead?

Primary Key And Foreign Key - Private Locking Object For List1 And Lock List1 Whenever It's Modified

This is a follow-up to a previous question regarding locking on two List(Of T) objects. Suppose I have a function like this:

which resides in a class that declares List1. In a multithreaded environment, I now understand that I should have a private locking object for List1 and lock List1 whenever it's modified or enumerated. My question is, should I do this:

.net - Why Can't Call Private Shared Methods From A Public Shared Method

Aug 25, 2011

I have a class like this:

It works, when I make getBar methods public, but I don't want to expose these unneccessarily. Why I can't call private shared methods from a public one in the same class is over my head. I'm using .net framework 4.0 in a web application.

Create A "shared" Variable That Is Shared With All Instances Of A Class?

Jan 14, 2011

I seem to be drawing a blank. I'd like to create a "shared" variable that is shared with all instances of a class but not classes that inherit from it. For example.Class A: Shared list As New List(Of String): list.Add("A")

Class B Inherits A: list.Add("B")Class C Inherits B: list.Add("C")The end result I'd like is that any instance of A has just A in the list. Any instance of B has A and B in the list. Any instance of C has A, B, and C in the list. I can accomplish it by creating Instance variables, but I have to construct the list for each instance of a class. I'd like to construct it once for a specific point in the Hierarchy and then share it accross other instances of that class.

Inheritance (Private Overrides Function) - Create A Class And All Other Classes Inherit From It And Modify It A Bit

Oct 15, 2011

I am cleaning up some code and I have multiple classes that are 99% exactly the same. So my understanding is that my options are...

1. Create a class and all other classes inherit from it and modify it a bit

2. Create an abstract class and all classes inherit from it and modify a bit ** I took this route

3. Create an interface and all classes Implement that interface.

Here is my 'original' class below (the one that all of them look 99% identical). This class is used in an arraylist so I have a listing of all my images from a folder I have searched.

Create A Generic Shared Class That Can Operate On Predefined Classes

Jan 27, 2010

I have an interface that i have declared some of the basic internal functions, subs, properties, etc. This interface is then implemented into 3 pre-defined classes. These classes are end-use classes so they dont get derived or inherited elsewhere. I am trying to create a generic shared class that can operate on each of these 3 predefined classes and potentially more as long as they implement the interface.

Create An Object From The Class - Use The Object To Interact With The SQL Db?

Apr 12, 2006

I am developing an IT Asset Tracking application using VB 2005 and SQL Server 2005 Express edition. Will I need to create classes to represent objects such as Computers, Printers, Scanners/Faxes, Contracts, Purchase Orders etc or are there any other approaches. For example, if I am correct, I will have a class called Computer and its properties will include Make,Model,CPU,Hard Disk,Memory etc. Is this the right approach.

Computers can be split up into Desktop PC's, Servers and Notebooks. Would I have to create separate classes for these as well or would they be ok under the Computer class.Once I create an object from the class, how can I use the object to interact with the SQL db.I am a beginner to VB.NET 2005 therefore I am slowly getting to grips with OOP.

Difference Between A Private, Public, Shared Functions/Sub/Variables?

Jul 22, 2009

give me a good resource that explains the difference between a Private, Public, Shared Functions/Sub/Variables? I normally use Public for Subs/Functions inside of Modules I call from other parts of the program. But I'd like to get more of an understanding of how and when to use them. I want as little as impact to a system that is running my programs as possible, so i guess the key here is I'm trying to just get more proficient in my coding.

Private Shared Variables Vs Local / Namespace Performance

Jun 8, 2009

I came across a number of new Private Shared variables (of type Hashtables(Of String), initialized in the declaration) added to a partial class for a very large (DataContext-derived) class. This seems sensible to me in one sense because they never change, and making these shared variables ensures that they won't get re-initialized every time a function is called. However, these variables are only used within the scope of one function in the class, and I fear the private namespace of this DataContext-derived class is getting rather polluted, and having these sorts of things exposed at such a high level might be confusing to others reading the code in the future.

Would there be negative performance impact to making these local variables within the function where they are used, or is there some better way to handle this? Basically we are using these 3 hashtables to determine whether anything within particular subsets of properties changed (using GetModifiedMembers and then using the Overlaps function of the hashset to see if any of the modified members correspond to members we care about).

Edit: I caved and took the time to write my own test program, which confirmed that there is a cost to using local variables (which I assume applies generally to all cases -- I doubt there's any case where a shared variable would be slower unless using the shared variable requires some additional logic to do so properly): [Code]

So in this particular case, using the local variable costs about 200%. But in most cases (including my own), the time is probably negligible compared to the overall task. So I guess the question now becomes, how do people generally feel about improving code maintainability at the cost of negligible but known performance impacts?

VS 2005 Modules Vs Private Classes With Shared Members

Mar 28, 2011

I've read that modules are basically shared classes. For a module though, you can call a method directly without prefixing the module name. So I can do this: methodTest("abc", mod1Enum.enum2)But for a class with shared members I have to fully qualify the method call, and in this case fully qualify the enum:[code]In our conversion from VB6 to .NET the need to fully qualify all calls like this might be an argument for us to bring our VB6 modules over as modules instead of converting them to classes.

.net - Create A Variable Of An Instance Object Of A Class At Runtime?

Sep 29, 2011

I am trying to create new variables inside a class after creating its object at runtime. The problem is that I don't know the variable names or the value beforehand so I have to create the new variables at runtime.

[Code]...

This is a more elaborate explanation of my code. If you observe that in the Eval function I have tried to evaluate Fval(abc). Now the object array abc is not declared in the Test class because it existence is not known beforehand. What I want to do is create an object array abc of length 2 and populate it with some values and when Fval(abc) is called then then the value of index 1 should be the return value of Eval fucntion.

Can't Inherit Shared Properties From A Base Class In A Child Class?

Dec 29, 2010

This is another one of my "I think it's not possible but I need confirmation" questions.I have a base class for a bunch of child classes. Right now, this base class has a few common properties the children use, like Name. The base is an abstract class (MustInherit)Technically, this means that everytime a child class is instantiated, it lugs around, in memory, its own copy of Name. The thing is, Name is going to be a fixed value for all instances of a given child. I.e., Child1.Name will return "child_object1", and Child2.Name will return "child_object2".

Create An Object Of A Class In Which There Are Properties And Functions That Do Database Selects, Updates And Deletes?

Oct 22, 2010

how to implement UI, BL and DAL in a project the way that I see it as a requirement for some projects. The way I am able to do a project now is from a form create an object of a class in which there are properties and functions that do database selects, updates and deletes. Looks to me that doing a project like that is separating the UI from the DAL. In an update button click event I may call Obj. Delete (txtCustID.txt) for example. I don't understand the part of further breaking it down to include a Business layer; in which a vb solution is made up of three solutions. What goes in the BL?Does the BL call the DAL?

Use A Private Class And It's Members From Another Class?

May 18, 2009

I usually use which is free, works a little too well, it's obfuscating the code that passes between my scripting class and the other classes, so after obfuscating the app, the scripting functions no longer work. However I found another obfuscator called Skater lite which is a free edition, it will only obfuscate private classes and members, so what I would like to do if possible is make most of my classes private and their members (except for the scripting class, which should allow it to work properly after being obfuscated), and somehow still use them globally, declaring an instance of the class doesn't seem to work, I'm not even sure it's possible and I know little about the scope of private classes, so anyone got any ideas or workarounds?

Flattening An Object Hierarchy Using A Shim Class - Initializing Derived Object Properties From The Base Object?

Jul 10, 2010

I am somewhat new to object oriented programming and am attempting to flatten a Linq object hierarchy by using a shim class.how to initalize a derived class with property values from a base class?I have two objects, a base object with about 100 properties, and a derived object which inherits from the base object and adds a few additional properties beyond those of the base object. My simple constructor creates the derived object, but I am looking for a way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object.Right now I am using reflection to iterate over the properties individually and I suspect there may be a better way. The following example shows my shim class constructor for the derived class, and two properties:

newProperty1 - a new string property of the derived class

flattenedProperty2 - a new string property of the derived class, copied from a 2nd-level object of the base class

Code example:

Public Class derivedObj
Inherits baseObj
Private _newProperty1 As String[code].......

Is this the correct constructor approach to flatten the object hierarchy using a shim class? My second question relates to initialization of properties in the derived class. The constructor above creates the derived object, but what is the best way to initialize the derived object properties with values from the base object? The following code uses reflection to iterate over the properties individually, but I suspect there may be a better way.

Code example:

' property names are in the string array fieldNames

'baseObjQuery is an ienumerable of baseObj

'derivedObjList is a list of derivedObj[code].....

Is there a simple way to initialize values for the properties in the derived object based upon the values of the common properties in the base object?
