Creating A Console Version Of A Roguelike?

Jun 7, 2011

I know, not the ideal environment for games. However, I do love VB.net and would like to try.Currently, I am creating a console version of a roguelike (hack/slash ascii adventure) and need some help with the theory. The implementation I can handle.

In the game loop, if I redraw the map every time an action happens, there will be an awful flicker.Should I: a.) set up movements so they rewrite the area the player was at, and then write at the tile the player is going to

b.) use WPF and use the canvas

c.) insert your better solution?

C# - Building A Roguelike In Silverlight (or WPF)?

Dec 10, 2009

I've been toying with the idea of building a web-based Roguelike game using Silverlight (or maybe just a desktop game using WPF).

If you don't know what a Roguelike is, it's a type of graphical RPG where the graphics are rendered using text. Because the graphics engine is relatively simple, you get to spend your time building features into the game and it's possible for one person to quickly build something fun.

For instance, a typical screen might look something like this (the @ is the player, # is a wall, the other characters are things like monsters, stairs, and items):

I'm an experienced ASP.Net dev and I'm just getting started with Silverlight. Is there a particular approach I should take for this? To provide some background, in Winforms, most standard approaches are too slow -- the text ends up updating with a visible, ugly blink. I'm thinking something to do with the Canvas might be appropriate, but even better would be to somehow draw a screen into a buffer and then instantly flip that onto the screen so that it becomes visible instantly.

But I don't really want to mess around with DirectX right now - I'm hoping WPF can get me to where I need to be without a big learning curve.

Update: So this turned out to be pretty challenging. I tried a lot of different approaches and I was finally able to get it to actually render fast enough, but I think that to make it blazing hot fast you should probably build a sprite map of the font you want to use and work from that instead of trying to use any of the built in font rendering stuff. I didn't do that.

When I got the core rendering engine done, I ended up with some annoying artifacts related to quirks of font rendering (even fixed width fonts are sometimes a liiitle bit wide...), and when I finally worked that out I discovered libtcod, which is a very impressive roguelike engine that has a C# wrapper. That's all console based. I played with it a little and I was blown away.

As of 1.5.1, everything I've touched in libtcod works great except for the mouse input stuff and one of the keyboard input modes (which I think they recently ditched), but everything you need to make a roguelike is in there, and that includes several line-of-sight, pathfinding, and even dungeon generation algorithms. It's pretty advanced visually. Have you ever seen an RL like this?

In a nutshell, it's possible to build a roguelike with silverlight, but I wouldn't go in expecting it to be easy unless you've already got a strong silverlight or game dev background. You're going to be re-inventing some serious wheels, and even with a powerful toolkit that allows to focus on gameplay, there's no shortage of things to do.

Make A Basic Roguelike In VB 2010 Express Edition?

Jun 3, 2012

I would like to know the basics of roguelike development in Basic, Visual Basic to be more specific. As stated in the title, I have Visual Basic 2010 Express Edition (fully paid). I do know about variables, if statements, basic math operators (Such as addition and powers), advanced math operators (such as PI and Sqrt), nested if statements, functions, subs, and all of the other basic stuff about Visual Basic. I am most effective with console applications, rather than windows form applications. My favorite roguelike is ADOM (Ancient Domains of Mystery), which, in my opinion, is much better than nethack. I would like to make a game similar to ADOM, but I don't even know how to make the player move around the screen and collide with walls. I am also most effective with Video Tutorials, rather than written tutorials, just cause I'm not a big reader. I have seen most of thenewboston's video tutorials on Visual Basic more than once, and I have all of the basic stuff nailed down in my brain. If anyone at all can help me, or even team up with me in my VB.Net project ATOR (Ancient Temple of Redhold), it would make me so happy I would burst out in tears of joy! Btw, I have created a bunch of unfinished text-based games before in the game engine ADRIFT 5, so I do know the basics of game development.

Creating A Console Application With Calculations?

Sep 13, 2009

I am having trouble creating a console application with these specifications:

* Declare variables named HoursWorked, HourlyRate, GrossPay, and NetPay, each having a data type of Double.

* Read values for the hours worked and hourly rate.

* Write the statements to multiply the hours worked by the hourly rate to calculate the gross pay. Calculate the net pay by multiplying the gross pay by 0.80.

* Display the gross pay and net pay (formatted for currency).

This is what I have so far:

Sub Main()
Dim HoursWorked As Double
Dim HourlyRate As Double
Dim GrossPay As Double

[code]....

I don't exactly understand what it means to "read the values for hours worked and hourly rate". Does it have something to do with "Read Line"?

And is it possible to make ClickOnce and a msi in one solution of VS 2008? If so, is there any conflict or pitfall?

BTW I am using VB if that makes any difference.

VS 2008 Check Difference Between A Full Version And Unregistered Version?

Sep 1, 2010

I have created a license system for my application with MySql about half a year ago. What it would do is take the serial number and send it to my server if the key was correct it would return a 0 if its wrong the return value would be a 1.The problem was that when the serial number was entered correctly my program would create a "fake file" for example vb.dll in the system. And on run time my program would check for that vb.dll if the file exist it would skip my trial program and run the app as a full version. Half year later i think creating a "fake file" and checking for it on start up is extremely wrong and that's not very good security. How can i check the difference between a full version and unregistered version?

C# - In A .NET Console App, Have A Line Of Text Stay Visible In The Console All The Time?

Jun 1, 2011

I was thinking of adding a simple bandwidth monitor to a console application and I was wondering if it would be possible to keep a line in the console window visible at all times. I could set something up manually to pass new console output into a method that would get the contents of the console, clear the console, add the bandwidth data on the first row, then rewrite each line of previous information back to the console, etc.. but that seems like a really hacky way to go about it, and I'd be limited to the amount of rows visible at once in the console window (no scrolling).

However, these appear to have limitations on values greater than 127. I need to be able to send all 255 values.

It sounds confusing but it's not really. What I need is basically a way to emulate the console style text, without using a console. What I'm really doing is trying to do a matrix effect on my form background, by drawing symbols and moving them, alternating their colors (see this video for what I mean).

Is there a way to do this effectively with a timer and a draw event, with the timer calling the draw event and changing the intervals?
