Creating Arrays With No Specific Size?

Apr 12, 2010

being used to PHP and the easiness of creating arrays with no specific size... I'm hating arrays in VB.

Is there a way I can create an array who's size I won't know?

I'm pulling information out of an XML file and need the information available in another sub - so I'm stashing it in a public array I create at the beginning of the form.

Set The List Size Back To Normal Once Have Doubled Its Size (arrays)?

Jul 16, 2009

when I click the Open button a file is opened and its items are sorted alphabetically. to do this I have doubled the size of my list. However, when I click the button again to reopen the same file, the items will ADD ON to the previous open-file event even though I have this piece of lstListboxTwo.Items.Clear()(the correct thing is to clear the previous items and add the new ones)So I think this has to do with the new size of my list..I think that I have to set the list size back to its normal size when re-clicking on the button.

Construct Byte Arrays That Will Be Guaranteed To Come Out Of Encryption At A Pre-determined Size?

Mar 31, 2011

Working with System.Cryptography, I'm noticing that data arrays up to a certain size will either conform to the size of the Initialization Vector (IV) or the size of the Key provided. So with a 48-byte Key and a 32-byte IV, up to around 42 bytes of data will encrypt to 32 bytes and 44+ will encrypt to 48 bytes of data. I've tested this with a variety of data arrays, and it seems to always come out the same... but I have a concern that higher byte values in the original array may result in longer encrypted arrays.

how or whether I can construct byte arrays that will be guaranteed to come out of Encryption at a pre-determined size?

Creating An App Using Arrays?

Apr 12, 2011

I needed to create an app using arrays. The goal of the app was to input a certain amount of points and display their level of contribution and any benefits they receive (for example: enter 500 points -> display "Gold level" and "Fieldhouse privileges, Parking at game, Football tickets"). I was supposed to use a loop and intLevel array to find the donor level that corresponds to the input amount, display the donor level using the strLevel array and using the strBen array display the benefits that apply to this donor.

What I was given:

Dim intLevel() As Integer = {50, 100, 200, 500, 1000}
Dim strLevel() As String = {"Contributor", "Laker Club", "Bronze", "Silver", "Gold"}

[Code]....

My app works, but my prof's comments on it were to get rid of the "+ 1" on the first "Do Until" loop, cross off the second Do Until loop and he just wrote "not quite" next to the bottom two lines.

So basically, I'm wondering how I would write code to search for the amount of points (without having to add the "2000" so it doesn't blow up on me) and matching it with strBen. To be honest, I don't understand why I am not getting points for this.

Creating Arrays And Resizing Them?

Jan 26, 2011

Lets say I want to create an array with 20 elements all set to a default value (let's say, 0)

But later, during runtime, I might want to resize the array. I might make it larger, to support 30 elements. The 10 new elements will have the default value of 0.

Or I might want to make my array smaller, to just 5. So I delete the complete the existence of the last 15 elements of the array.

C# - Arrays - Use The IEnumerable<T> Interface And Make It Type Specific

Mar 1, 2011

In many projects I work on, whenever I have to return a read only collection, I use the IEnumerable<T> interface and make it type specific like so:

CODE:

Most of the time, I return a List but in some functions and read only properties I return an array which also serves the purpose alright by kind courtesy of Extension Methods.

My question is am I violating any design principles by returning IEnumerable<T>s instead of specific types (e.g.: List<T>, HashSet<T>, Stack<T> or Arrays)?

Creating A Database Using Structures And Arrays?

Nov 15, 2011

I want to create a relational database in VB2010 and I am attempting to accomplish this goal by creating a structure of records to be stored in a Random Access File. For each record, I want to organize each fixed-length record so that 4-integer sets of data are stored into a a multi-dimensional array. But when I try to write the code below at the module level, I get an error.

Structure PictureDat
'len= needed for Open
of Random Access File [code].....

Since I want to read/write/save the data in this structure to a Random Access File with a fixed record length size, I need to exactly specify the size of the record...which is, of course, determined by the array's dimensions. If I could accomplish this strategy, then I could search this random access file for a match of search criteria consisting of 4-integers with any of the 4-integer sets of data in each record and thus find, edit, delete and search records...therby retrieve information from my database.

Is my program design inefficient? Is there a better way to handle perhaps hundreds of thousands of records? The IDE keeps telling me that I am using a deprecated method of file I/O when I use FileOpen(), FileGet(),FilePut() and should be using MyFile.I am entirely comfortable with my time-tested method of data storage that ensures the security of disk storage while exposing only one record at a time to the PC's volatile RAM, thereby not allowing all my data exposed to possible memory corruption on a PC left on for hours, which would be the case if I loaded the whole file as a monster- sized string or stream. Also, these older file access methods allows my code to run on PC's with modest amounts of memory.

When the user inputs -1, stop the entering process.Check user input to circumvent bad numbers (numbers less than -1)Make two copies of the array (making sure the two new arrays are only as big as the amount of numbers the user input, might need a counter)Sort the first copy using any algorithmSort the second copy using standard array.sort method.Display all three arrays in a form.I have this so far, and I'm stumped as to where to go next.

C# - Print A Specific Physical Size?

May 5, 2011

I'm sure this is a common problem, but I haven't been able to find it.

I have a website and I want the user to be able to print a rectangle on their printer that is 3.5 inches x 2 inches. Exactly (within reason).

EDIT: To clarify - I'm looking to print a bunch of multicolored Text within a rectangle that needs to be a specific physical size. I also need to print specific shapes around some of the letters.

I'd looked into some of the .NET Printing stuff and found examples of measuring/drawing strings and shapes; but I didn't see anything that would let me specify a specific size.

APP Creating PDF File With 0KB Size

Jul 13, 2010

I (SQL Server DBA) have inherited a VB App, being called in a TSQL Script, that creates a PDF using the Crystal reports. Until a month , PDF was being generated with correct extension and size, but for some unknown reason the app creates a non PDF file with Zero size. Interestingly the script that calls the App and send the PDF created as an attachment in an email via MS Outlook, sends it as PDF with data.

Also when trying to open up the same 0KB file in Acrobat, gives an error:
"Could not open because it is either not a supported file type or the file has been damaged (for example it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)"
FYI, the Exchange server was upgraded so the email isn't working either and its causing a great pain for management to not to be able to have that report.

Creating A List(Of String) Always Of Size 9?

Aug 4, 2010

I am creating a List(Of String), always of size 9.This list contains True/False values. I need to go through this list and find the 3 values that are True (will never be more than 3, but could be less) and then set 3 string values in my code to the 3 index's of those values + 1.

Here is my current code:

Private Sub SetDenialReasons(ByVal LoanData As DataRow)
Dim reasons As New List(Of String)
With reasons

[code]...

I had 3 True's next to each other in the array and the code failed with an exception saying count must be positive or something. Now if there are less than 3 True's, it should set the remaining DenialReason's that haven't been set yet as blank (however they are set as blank in the constructor already to account for this).

How To Search For Texts With A Specific Font Size In Rich Text Box

Creating A Routine To Decode A 0-255 Number Into Specific Values?

Oct 22, 2011

This is kind of a brain twister. First, what it involves. I'm writing an application that is working with values sent to and received from an 8 bit micro-controller. There are 8 bits of specified values. Here they are. bit1 = 1, bit2 = 2, bit3 = 4, bit4 = 8, bit5 = 16, bit6 = 32, bit7 = 64 and bit8 = 128.I made a routine that uses 8 checkboxes to add the values for sending them to the micro-controller. That wasn't too hard. In my appp there are 8 checkboxes. Each checkbox assigns one of the specific bit values to a variable (or subtracts it when unchecked). The total of the variable is then displayed in a textbox and ready to send. Now the hard part that ed to take any number between 0 and 255 apart in values that will be a combination of the numbers (1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128) above and show each checkbox which is assigned those numbers to be checked.

Creating A Class That Searches A Binary File For A Specific Customer Number

Once it finds it I am positioning it at the first instance of that Customer number as there can be multiple records with the same Cus Number.

Now here is my question. I now need to loop through this Customers records and do some data base searches. Since I want to make my class as generic as possible what should I pass back to the calling class? An Array with all their records. If I do this I have to loop twice, once in the class and once when it passes the array bac to the original calling class?

VB6 Used Recordsetsor Arrays - .Net Framework In VB2010. Datasets, Dataviews. Tableadapters, Arrays. Enums ?

May 9, 2010

In VB6 I load a recordset containg all of the records (6 fields per record)in a table into an XArray and then manipulate the records in the array and then write them back to the original table. The array issorted by the first field (1 to maybe 8000 or more) I need to find records in the array by an ID field and then move them (because of some external criteria that happens many times) from say number 400 to number 375. Then all of the other records between 375 and 399 were renumbered up 1 to fill the gaps left by the move.

The XArray worked well as it could find and also move to a next record easily to facilitate the revisions to each record quickly. Everything is done in VB6 in code and nothing visual needs to be shown to the user until say 2000 of these external changes are complete. What is the best, most efficient way to do this in the .Net framework in VB2010. Datasets, Dataviews. tableadapters, arrays. enums ?
