Define An Assignment Operator In Structure?

Jul 9, 2010

I am having a structure that is actually a simple byte with more functionality.[code]...

If there would be a way to inherit from Structure I would simply inherit from Byte adding my functionality, basically I just need a byte Structure with custom functionality.

My question is also valid when you want to define your new singleton member value-types (like, you want to define a nibble-type for instance etc.) and you want to be able to set it with an assignment to number or other language typed representation.

Define An Implicit Conversion Operator In Program?

Aug 21, 2009

In C# you can use the implicit keyword to define an implicit user-defined type conversion operator.

In VB.NET you can define a CType conversion operator that will explicitly convert a user-defined type into another type.

Is there a way to declare an implicit conversion operator in VB.NET?

Define A Generic That Can Take Several Possible Value Types?

May 4, 2011

Is there any way to define a Generic in VB.NET which will accept only Singles or Doubles? I tried the following things, based on what I've found online, but none compile:

Dim target As Nullable(Of {Single, Double})
Dim target As Nullable(Of T As {Single, Double})
Dim target As Nullable(Of T {Single, Double})
Dim target As Nullable(Of Single, Double)
Dim target As Nullable(Of T As Single, Double)

I want to specify that target can either be a Single? or a Double? only.

Use Generic Methods In VB?

Apr 24, 2010

In VB.NET when i define a subroutine (or function) , while declaring arguments , a list comes out. Having values ByVal,ByRef,Of,Optional, and ParamArray. Of these five lists , four are better understood except "Of". I searched and found that "Of" is used for Generics .Generic Class or Generic Method.

But i did'nt find any procedure that how to create and use Generic Method in VB.NET. I found same in VB.C# language.

Are Generic Operator Overloads Allowed In .NET 4

Dec 15, 2010

I am assuming "No", but I cannot find conclusive proof on Google to back this assumption. Using keywords of 'vb.net "generic operator overload"' yields exactly 1 result, and removing 'overload' gives more, but no direct statement to the issue.

My thinking is given an abstract class, it'd be great to be able to implement a generic operator overload that a derived class can use in such a case when said operator overload has to return a New copy of the derived class, yet the code for each overload is the same. If that makes any sense.

This touches back to my previous questions on my custom Enum class and overloading the bitwise operators (And, Or, Not, & Xor), but, this particular thought was prompted by a mere curiosity of "Can it be done?".

Here's what one of my custom enums basically look like:
The parent, EBase is nothing special, just hosting common Name and Value properties, plus two shared operators, op_Equality and op_Inequality.

Friend NotInheritable Class EExample
Inherits EBase
Private Sub New()

[Code]....

Then (in theory anyways), calling EExample.OneA Or EExample.FiveE would work because the compiler would know to call the generic operator overload from EBase, know that EExample.Enums matches the IEnums interface constraint, and automatically supply T.

That or I'm just swimming up a certain creek here without a paddle and over-analyzing things. But it's an interesting thought, no? What is StackOverflow's consensus? Do I need to lay off the Spice a little bit?

PS: I use /* */ style comments because Markdown doesn't handle VB-style properly.

PPS: I know that, in the last example, Return New T( ... ) is invalid, but I can't think of a proper syntax that would articulate the basic idea.

Shared Class With Generic Methods?

Jan 28, 2010

I have created a Interface and a couple classes that implement this Interface. I am in the process of developing a Shared Class that utilizes the functions that each of the individual classes have, due to the interface implementation. What i need to know is how do i develop this Shared Class so that way each of the methods within it are restricted to a single data type. This single data type needs to be restricted to any class that has implemented the Interface.

Some examples:

Public Interface IVector(Of T)
Sub Add(ByVal v2 as T)

[code]....

As you can see it would allow me to develop one form, since i have standardized the required Subs/Functions for any class the implements the IVector interface. As i am still in developement, i was wondering if my current understanding of the method generics is correct in its current form or what i would have to do to make the Generic Shared Class work in the fashion that i am looking for in the example implementation.

Provide Cast Methods For Cast Operator Overloads In C#?

I read somewhere that older VB .net (pre VB .NET 2005?) couldn't use overloaded operators in a C# class. Is it true for overloaded cast operators?Either way do you guys think it's a disadvantage for a C# class library not to include them and arithmetic methods as actual methods for other languages, like:

Is There A Concept Of "Generic Structure" Similar To Generic Collections, Generic Classes

Dec 16, 2009

We have migrated our Vb6 application to VB.NET using a third party tool. Now we are in a process of Refactoring and introducing object oriented concepts in the application.

In VB6, we were using structures in many places. As a part of introducing object oriented programming,

1. is it a good idea of changing all Structures to Classes? or Is there a concept of "Generic Structure" similar to Generic collections, Generic classes?

2. Can some one guide me any source containing guide lines or best practices for applications that are migrated to VB.NET from VB6 and implementing object oriented programmaing.

Making Class Methods Instead Of Instance Methods In .NET?

Mar 29, 2010

I am not sure how clear my question is by the title, but I am trying to make Class methods instead of Instance methods in Visual Basic that way I don't have to waste memory and code creating temporary objects to execute methods that don't need instance variables.

I am not sure if you can do that in VB but I know you can in Objective-C by using either a "+" or "-" sign in front of the method declaration. And in C++ (at least I think, I can't remember) you put the static keyword or const keyword in front of the function. How would I do this in VB if it is possible? Or should I just make a separate set of functions that are not members of a class?

Error: Option Strict On Disallows Operands Of Type Object For Operator '='. Use The 'Is' Operator To Test For Object Identity

Jan 27, 2010

I am tightening up my coding with the Option Strict set to ON. It has now produced alot of errors. An example of this is:

If AllocatedDGV.Rows(i).Cells("RoomNumber").Value = RoomsAvailableDGV.Rows(j).Cells("RoomName").Value Then

It gives me the following error: Option Strict On disallows operands of type Object for operator '='. Use the 'Is' operator to test for object identity.

.net - Can A Generic Version Of A Derived Class Override A Base Method Using The Generic Type

Apr 13, 2012

Consider:

Public MustInherit Class Column
Public ReadOnly Property ReturnSomethingUseful() As Object
Get
'return something useful

[code]....

But this gives the following error:

Public Overrides Function ParseValue(sValue As String) As Boolean'
cannot override 'Public Overridable Function ParseValue(sValue As String) As Object'
because they differ by their return types.

I accept that you can't do this, but I'd like to be able to preserve the semantics of what I'm. trying to do, which is to have an untyped version that deals with Object, but a typed version in derived classes that knows about the specific type T.

Option Strict On Disallows Operands Of Type Object For Operator Use The 'Is' Operator To Test For Object Identity

Apr 6, 2012

I need to write an interface to get data to/from our data files.

We have a low level class that holds field values for each record read from the files.

This just holds two values, the value read from the file (DBValue) and the updated value that may need to be written back to the file (CurrentValue).

These values may be any of the standard value types (integer, date etc) or a string.

Either value (DBValue or CurrentValue) may be null if not defined.

I have written the class to manage this data which works fine while option strict is NOT on.

But we have an office policy of having option strict on all the time.

When I put option strict on, my object value comparisons fail with the error: "Option Strict On disallows operands of type Object for operator '='. Use the 'Is' operator to test for object identity."

Question, how should I change the following code to handle option strict on ...

This is all running on Visual Studio 2010

[Code]...
